Wow, ❤ amazing. Im 69 years old played professionally in the 70s and 80s them later worship team in a church. In the 70s my rig was mt amp, either a dual showman or ampeg V4 , a cry baby wah, Gibson les paul and a Gibson L6S the set neck one. Basically there wasn’t much for tech. In the 60s it was often hard to find a dedicated bass amp. The dual showman was for guitar if you had the JBL D130s and for bass JBL d140, I HAD A SOLID STATE ACOUSTIC AMP AND CAB THAT SAID RIGHT ON THE HEAD GUITAR/BASS. THE BASS MAN WAS UNDER POWERED, ACTUALLY EVERYTHING WAS UNDERPOWERED FOR BASW EXCEPT THE SUN 360. THAT AMPEG I FORGOT THE MODEL. IT WASNT TILL MID TO LATE 80S BASS APS CAME AROUND. ANYWAY, UNTIL I SAW YOUR VIDEO I HAD NEVER HEARD OF DOING BACKING TRACKS LIKE THAT. I KNOW THE Bee Gees used a system like that and it was amazing. They had a special toward the end where thr first twin died, and they did a song for Andy. It was a real tear jerker where they surprised the audience dimmed the lights Andy came in at the second verse, the brothers just sang backup and it sounded exactly like Andy was up there singing with him. Your young so in case you dont know in the 80s Andy gib was the 4th brother who started a solo career, his brothers helped. He became number 1 pop and teen heart throb. Had trouble with drugs nd rinsing and had a heart attack and died on his thirtieth birthday. If you’ve never seen them it’s called Bee Gees how can you mend a broken heart. It’s on max maybe Netflix too. Inspirational. Sounds like you play everything. I love all music except for rasp. Believe it kr not rap. Started in the mid 70s. I couldent get into it. Sorry for the long message but im just excited. Im going to share this with some old band mates. This system you do is incredible. At my age a couple of my music mates are dead, so i can still get together with a few survivors and gig again without a full band. Or just pratice with my friends. Anyway, this is the most professional , helpful . Videos I’ve ever seen for musicians. Thank you so much. At my age there’s gonna be a learning curve and i dont know how far ill get but i am super grateful. I’ll be around bro.,

Much worship bands use also backings. In some cases to blow up the sound with pads and additional vocals. I have an interactive hardware solution. This creates drums and guitar and the vocal harmonizer adds a choir, so I can emulate up to 5 additional musicians and 3 more singers. But I have the freedom, to change the order. Okay, I could also spontaneously add another song, but the man, who projects the lyrics and my fellow musicians couldn't follow.

Thanks Scott. One thing I don't think you mentioned or I missed it is 90% of Karaoke-version tracks are not recorded to a click track. You can tell because in the upper left area where they give the tempo, they say "About" 136 BPM. I have found some horrible variations in speed that initially frustrated our drummer. Almost every track of theirs is off. Most DAW's have some kind of ability to stretch or shrink a track. In Ableton Live it's "Warp". I use this on every track to make sure the track is exactly aligned to the tempo grid. I start out aligning markers to quarter notes and then zoom in to 32nds. It's amazing how much variation there can be. This adds about 10-15 minutes of work per track but greatly worth it. Now the song is in perfect time and can use it to sync MIDI or other future tracks, no sweat.
@ScottUhlMusic
Жыл бұрын
Yeah, some of them have definitely been frustrating, but usually okay to deal with. Does the warp feature allow you to warp all the audio and stuff so it’s exactly on the tempo? If so, I’ll have to look at that for some of the songs for sure! Thanks for the tip
@jazzzman1000

Although….there are some instances where songs breathe here and there with tempo fluctuations. Being super strict on tempo is great most of the time, but not always. Case in point “Man In The Box”. Verses are slower than the choruses. Get a click going when the song starts. Leave the click at the same tempo when the chorus hits and it’s going to feel very draggy. Just an observation.

Sometimes we learn how to run before walking through necessity, and seeing a video like this that breaks it down into steps and goes from start to finish helps fill in the unknown unknowns! Edit: was also going to say, if you're a vocalist only, and need all the instrumentals on a backing track, Karaoke Version charges only 1.99 for their non-stemmed backing tracks (options are usually just "instrumental only", "instrumental and background vocals, no lead", and "complete cover" for their vocal tracks)

I enjoy your videos Scott - and even though I've been creating and using backing tracks for 5 or 6 years, I've still learned a few things from you! At 16:07 ish, you talk about creating mono tracks out of stereo in Logic. When I build my backing tracks (with KaraokeVersion), I pan my parts there before downloading, so when I download two different keyboard parts for instance... I pan them hard left and hard right. That gives me two separate MONO tracks to work with once I import them into Pro Tools. For me, that's a much quicker and more efficient approach. Am I mistaken, or is this the easier way to do it?
@ScottUhlMusic
Жыл бұрын
Oh interesting! And that gives you both the left and right summed down to mono? Meaning you do not miss whatever is panned to the right if you pan it to the left?
@geraldhartley
Жыл бұрын
@@ScottUhlMusic Yes, I believe that is correct. Another benefit is I can download the tracks in half the time. I pan all parts to L and R... (Drums on the Left, Bass on R for instance.) I can download an entire multi-track song very quickly. The other thing I do is comp tracks that are mostly dead space (like FX or sparse keys) Sometimes you can pan two different guitar parts to the Left side and still not have them overlap if they are not playing at the same time. That way I can download potentially 3 or 4 parts to a single L and R track. (two MONO summed tracks) Let me know if that makes sense, or if it's helpful at all. For me it's a huge time saver!!

Sure, it works out great for you and your band, which is 100% part of the problem. You're not doing the work. Someone else is. Your band sounds amazing, tone, timing. Remove all the tracks if there are several of them and your band sounds like crap. Tone, timing, etc If you are the original artist who slaved over in a studio and created those tracks.... as long as you didn't over play it. I may look the other way. Keeping The tracks few and far between. I might look the other way, I go out, pay my money because I love live music... more than recorded stuff. I love the imperfections, the quicker speed because of the adrenaline rush, the trying to match studio guitar tones, close but not exact. This is what I pay my money for, other wise I'll stay home and listen to the recorded version. Listen to Celine Dion talk about every night in Vegas is completely different. The true joys of live music.

You left out one important thing. After you compile all of the individual tracks your going to use, save the session file for each song with all the tracks seperate and open it up while your at a full band practice. Then play the session and adjust the volumes of each track in the one song so the mix of all the parts is sitting well with the mix of the band. Then do a mix all the tracks down to one audio track. Then move to the next song and do the same. This accomplishes two things. One, it makes the mix of say, keys and special effects and bass guitar, etc , sit well with eachother in the mix of the one song. And two, if you do all of the songs this way during one practice, now all of the songs are at the same volume level relative to each other and the band. This is HUGE, as it keeps you from having tracks on songs that are too loud or not loud enough. That way you can do one or two songs for a sound chekc and set the backing track level and youll know that the level is perfect for all the songs through the night. One more tip, when setting these levels, don't sing any of the songs while playing with them. No leads and no backups. All you want to do is concentrate on the backing tracks overall mix within the mix of the tracks and the band. your live singing voices going ontop of that will make it Impossible to get it right.

Great vid, tons of usefulness! Thank you! However, as a sometimes solo guy, been thinking of backing tracks for years, but my vocal range is narrow and I need to transpose often…. Hate to say this as the vid is awesome, but I was waiting for a bit about transposition. Great content, will subscribe! ;))

Why to I hear my click and cues on both sides (loud and clear on the right one and faint buy clearly audible on the left side) whereas it's exactly the other way with the FOH-Track? I panned click and cue to the richt and FOH to the left.

Ok. I get. But how to play a concert alone with a backing track? Can I just put demo on play and play and sing along? From this tutorial I only learned things I can't afford. Ableton, monitors, it's not for me. I have a phone, normal laptop, not apple, I can only put a song to play on the phone without guitar and without voice and just perform my music since I don't have a band and can't play 7 instruments at once 😅😅

Hey another question regarding buying songs. Karaoke-versions is amazing, but I was wondering if you or anyone else also had any other companies that sell songs where I can download all the tracks individually? Like I said, they are awesome, but they don't always have everything and some of the versions aren't always the best. So it would be nice to have other options. Hopefully there are some companies like Karaoke-versions competing with them and one another. :)

Do you have any good tips for making your FOH person happy for drums? A friend and I are working on a project that will need a live drum machine tracks, and want to know which of these is the best option: 1. Put the drum machine as one channel 2. Have the kick as it's own channel, 3. Have the kick share a channel with the other synths? We're dealing with limited outputs so we want to make the sound person happy, but also work with what we have.
@ScottUhlMusic
Жыл бұрын
That’s a good question. Every sound guy is different. I personally put all drums out as one, but that’s just me when I do have to put drums on the backing track. I guess what would be best is kick on it’s own channel for the subwoofer and stuff like that. But ultimately I just put everything out as it’s own

HI Scott. Thank you for helping this old timer learn SO much. I have been working hard to get ST3 down and I am now at the point where I have 2 questions I need your help on...#1: Is there a simple way to just add a 2bar click intro to all my tracks (most are Karaoke version)??? I really just want to have the lyrics scrolling along as we play songs live without the actual backtrack being heard...#2 I am interested in finding a simple play/stop/pause foot pedal to operate ST3...what brand model do you recommend??? I will be using this for Solo work along with fully audible backtracks. I did see your elaborate video on adding count-in cues ,etc.. Just wondering if there is a simpler method than going thru Logic Pro (I currently have Audacity)... Thanks for your kind assistance...Steve

Thanks for all you are doing Scott. Like others have said incredible work and especially this video. I've doing this for..gulp.. 8 years or so. KV to Logic. Playback on iPad to Radial AV DI. For me, given that I have SO many tracks to mix , streamlining the workflow is super important. The two "convert to mono" via gain plug in and via KV download are also invaluable in your comments. Thanks guys! I think your approach to cue is exceptionally helpful and well done. We plan to repurpose our XR18 so our sound tech can mix the additional tracks live on the XR18 iPad and the X32 app at the same time. We can then make adjustments as needed and save scenes. Thoughts? Switching to Multitracker too. Thanks for the XR18 interface suggestion!! My main reason for using tracks are: 1. Better vocals - on pitch, on time, and formats stay intact. 2. Better band - today's Top 40 is grid based. So much so, tracks are required to cover most of it. Just the way it is. I hate a rushed "No Diggity" ;) 3. Better horns - form stays intact week to week and can match many horn charts we have exactly. 4. For us tracks on new tunes really packs the dance floor and without pushing tempos. We can actually cover the stuff properly. 5. Musicians have to do their homework. 6. Tighter endings many times using a cue. * I do leave a very low level lead vocal on the singers in ear side so they can practice at home. :) They don't like cues generally. Question- Do you have a best practice method yet for convert to mono on tracks? Keep up the great work!
@ScottUhlMusic
Жыл бұрын
Nice man! And yeah you can separate the tracks and do multi track outputs if you prefer for sure. I’ve been looking at the Track Rig for that possibly. I might do a video on it in the future. And as for convert to mono, using what I do in logic seems to be best, although I will likely switch to the gain plug-in going forward :)

Great vid must have taken hours. However, Is it elitist to assume professional musicians should not need cues and be treated like babies, its cheating at making money from very little talent. God help them if they became members of a jazz band where verse chorus could happen at any time just based on an eye brow being raised from a pianists solo being extended. Musicians need to be alert and have their telepathy game on. Its time consuming enough doing prep as a conductor for an orchestra never mind being an automation programmer for conducting software like stage traxx 3, when musicians are tought at school to read the room. I could spend hours automating and guiding lesser able musicians but there is no financial return on the many additional hours you spend (backroom) and it gets completely under appreciated by other musicians (singer) who just rock up and take the glory and payment on gigs. Should the backroom worker be paid more? 😂

Thanks for watching. I definitely disagree with you a lot, but if that’s what works for you, do what works best for you 👍 Tracks wouldn’t work where the song repeats or has a free-flow structure of course. However, I have over 1000 songs that I play between 3 different bands. Having cues on a song I haven’t played in months is definitely helpful. There’s no way to rehearse 1000 songs and I do music full time. Not to mention, it really helps the count in especially on how the song starts and ends to make sure everyone syncs up. Plus, we often have fill in players playing with us, and they might do the songs slightly differently. It’s really helpful for multiple reasons. Again, do what works best for you…. But I disagree with you on this one and will continue to use cues 👍

No, you set your mixer to receiver a MONO single. If you set it to stereo then it will only go to the left. But setting it to mono means it will be good 👍

Thanks Scott for this awesome tutorial. Ive been using Karaoke Version for a while now and have downloaded over 30 songs that my friend and I play to regularly. We are ready to play gigs and want to use wired in-ears. I bought the Fzone P4 and CCA-C12 in-ears and have been trying endlessly to get the separation of click and BT's. I'm using Presonus Studio One for my DAW. I have the BT's on one track and the click on another track. I then bounce to mono and pan click hard right and BT's hard left. Then I export mixdown to my laptop desktop. I use the splitter cable as you recommend with the red to my in-ears and the black to a channel of my PA, but click and BT's are not separated. The only thing im NOT using is a DI box. Not sure that is necessary. The quality of sound is fine. I just can't get the separation of tracks.

This is actually a really cool idea. I'm currently working on a Solo album and record all instruments myself over drum tracks I make. Usually when I practice the songs I write, I will play my guitar over the backing tracks I made and wondered if anyone else does this too, or if it would even work in a live setting without a full band. Cool to know that there are others who do this also. I really like your idea of using cues going straight into the in ears, really helpful advice!

Also, could you do a video on using AI to separate instruments/vocals from KZitem videos or Spotify downloads? There is not much Canadian music on the web sites like KaraokeVersions, so it's really hard to find the great music we want to play - IMotherEarth, Our Lady Peace, The Tragically Hip, Moist, Triumph, April Wine, etc. There's also not much metal on these sites. Thanks so much for this great channel. Oh, and you know what would be really, really cool? If generative AI could create tabs for tracks you plug into it ... who else thinks this will be available soon??

Hi Scott. This is the best KZitem video I have seen. Excellent stuff. Thank you. I’ve just started playing drums (Christmas 22) after me, my son and his girlfriend committed to forming a 3-piece band (drums, keyboard vocal) to play at a family gathering, which is now only a few weeks away! We can all play separately but find some songs difficult to stay together. This will save us!! A couple of questions: 1. is there any way to sync visual sheet music to the track (just the visual position marker not the audio) and 2. Is it possible to sync karaoke words on a screen to encourage audience participation? Thanks in advance. Great work, keep it up. Thanks again.

Amazin tutorial! Thank you. Have you ever considered to use multi-track? Expecially when you use your own mixer like the Behringer X Air series for your own in ear mix. I see that this is a little more complicated but it let's you 1. adjust volumes of the individual instruments if needed and 2. let's say your rhythm guitar player has to cancel shortly before the show you just bring their track in via the mixer. I really have no exprience with all of this, as we always only played everything live, but I'm just a hobby musician ;)
