After showing at both TIFF and SXSW, Backspot is now coming to theatres. The queer cheerleading movie produced by Devery Jacobs and Elliot Page is about Riley, and competitive cheerleader that is solely focused on being the best. After meeting her coach Eileen, she learns that maybe it doesn't have to be all or nothing when it comes to cheerleading.
The film stars Devery Jacobs, Kudakwashe Rutendo, Thomas Antony Olajide, Noa DiBerto, Olunike Adeliyi, Wendy Crewson, Shannyn Sossamon, and Evan Rachel Wood.
I talked to director D.W. Waterson about making a queer cheerleading movie and avoiding cheerleading stereotypes, getting their dream actor Evan Rachel Wood to play coach Eileen, and this movie reminding Evan of her independent film "Thirteen," and how they integrated their love for the musical "Legally Blonde" into movie.
