This would be GOLD for server rooms around the world. 10 year hands-off UPS that can be remotely monitored, with two switchable outputs for ~$1500? Watch out APC and Eaton! Having it auto-recover after full battery depletion, as well as just bypassing the batteries once they fail would be good too. Existing UPSes like to just shut off if you go too long without replacing the batteries. This could/should turn into just a regular surge protector after the batteries fail self-tests, and keep the load up.

Hey! This is actually a great callout -- this first generation of Backup is designed for more in-home use like keeping the fridge running, powering your microwave, charging a phone etc. With those applications in mind, our switchover time is closer to 20 milliseconds and for sensitive environments like a server room my understanding is you need something more in the 8-10ms range, which is one of the differentiating characteristics between a UPS and an EPS (Emergency Power Supply). Backup is an EPS. That said, you COULD pair this in-line with a lower-capacity, low-cost UPS which could handle that millisecond switchover and then Backup would take care of the rest for hours and hours and you'd get that remote control via the app as you mentioned. Thanks for bringing this up!

Is this solar compatible ? If so what capacity solar panels would you need to run this for longer term outages ?

@@Jmezie Hi! We offer 400W freestanding panels that work with the system. You can see those in the add-on section of the Kickstarter campaign. For a Core unit we recommend 1-2 panels and for a Complete Kit we recommend 2-4 panels.

@@Jmezie Backup can accept solar input between 20V and 150V and the connection is made on DC input via MC4 adapter. We recommend a minimum of 400W panels so you can see meaningful gains during peak sun. For a Core unit we recommend 1-2 panels and for a Complete Kit we recommend 2-4 panels.

do back up core and back up extend need to be connected to each other or can they be separated to work in different rooms?

Backup Core is the "brains" of the operation and where we house the inverter and iOT software. This is where you'll find the AC ports to plug in your fridge or other devices and the input port to connect Backup to the Grid. Extend units are pure energy reserves and must be connected to a Core unit to function. For every [1] Core Unit you can chain up to [6] Extend units. Extend units cannot function without a Core.
