K M just did, there’s no clear evidence that this is the case. Birds have multiple clutches of chicks a season...there’s no way they can discern which is weaker etc...it’s really nature....some are weak and don’t survive...some are strong and then get eaten by other birds or predators etc....it makes more sense the feeding is randomly distributed or just random...there’s no thought in the bird other than feeding the chicks.

@@ColonelCustard Did you see Soma Cruz's answer to you question? I used to believe that myth, too, that if we touched baby birds their parents would disown it because of the human smell. Then I began to work some with bird rescuers/rehabbers, & found out that myth wasn't at all true! I've seen myself birds reunited with their Mommies & birdy families, AFTER I'd touched & cared for them, then brought them back to their birdy families, they take right back up where the'd left off, no problems whatsoever. Such a beautiful comfort to find out & know that birds DON'T "hold that kinda grudge" against us peoples!

I'd love to know if the runt made it out too. I have a House Finch nest on my porch right now with newly hatched chicks. This was a great way for me to see what's coming up! Had no idea it was going to be so messy! Oh well. We have a tiny camera mounted above the nest from the porch ceiling. We installed it before she laid her eggs. It's been so much fun watching the progress. ***** I'd like to note- that while I don't agree with touching the birds, this man seems to really love and appreciate them. I don't think he meant any disrespect. UNLIKE MANY OF YOU WHO CHOSE TO NAME CALL AND LEAVE RACIST COMMENTS!!! You all need to check yourselves. Birds rarely abandon their young if they catch even the faintest whiff of human on them, that is a myth that has been passed around for generations. Most even believe that if a bird has fallen out of its nest, you must then on take care of it because the mother will not. Just pick it up and place it back in the nest, the mother won't reject it. Most birds have a limited sense of smell, and mostly watch for visual dangers and not olfactory. Its still not entirely great to touch the young due to diseases, ect. But it isn't detrimental.

Coffee Owl I wish I had knew this thing. I found a baby sparrow on the ground yesterday. I thought may be she fell from the nest but still her mother was feeding her. She wasn't grown enough to fly. It wasn't a safe place for the baby and as the mother was gone for too long ( She was flying away in search of food over and over again ) it left the baby in danger. So I just picked it up carefully and put it back in the nearest nest (backside of our house) baby instantly jumped in and I thought it must be her house ( I decided not to take it to my home because I didn't want human scent on it, I was afraid if she would be abandoned by her own mother) but OMG ...... I found her injured in the evening again on the ground. Her head, beak and neck were injured) I picked it up and took it to my home. She survived the whole night but next day while taking it to the bird doctor .. she couldn't make it 😭😣 that poor little tiny baby took so many attacks. GOD She kept fighting for her life, she wanted to live. I feel really guilty 🤦♂️and responsible for that... god forgive me. 🙏 PS- I wanted to share my story because I didn't know this fact otherwise I would have taken it with me to my home at the very first time. 😑 I WISH...I WISH I COULD SAVE IT!!!!

Thank you so much for caring about these creatures so much you would take the time and trouble to film their lifecycle. Most years, house finches build a nest in my eves on the back patio. I live in San Diego. Unfortunately, some thing came along and knocked down the eggs and killed them before they hatched.. Great video. The sound and visuals are so clear. Now I know more about the whole process. Some brave finches have returned and built again. I hope they have better luck. The first ones came in April. now it is early June.
