BACTROCERA OLEAE-OLIVE FRUIT FLY AND TRAP
Good morning my friends
This is the trap in its final form that I propose to build
Its usefulness is twofold, firstly it attracts, traps and kills the dako
and second by watching it regularly warns us
when we have a large dako population then we have to intervene
with bait sprays or whatever else our agronomist recommends!
WHAT IS DAKOS (FRUIT FLY) ANYWAYS?
One of the most serious problems in olive cultivation is the dakos.
the dakos is a fly that attacks the fruit of the tree
and it damages production.
It's a producer's nightmare every year!
A few words about what exactly it does to the olive tree.
As soon as the olives are set in June when they are still green
bores a hole in each olive and lays an egg
(each one can lay up to 12 eggs per day!! )
A caterpillar is created from the egg in about 4 days
which begins and eats the flesh of the olive internally.
In about 15 days, a nymph mutates.
After 10 more days it becomes an insect and leaves
from the hole that has been drilled
to restart the cycle of his life,
if temperature and humidity conditions allow
it can do 4 and 5 life cycles in a season!
Favorable conditions for the dako are when we have
temperature 23 - 29 degrees Celsius
and humidity 60-80% in autumn that is!
at temperatures above 30 and humidity below 25% i.e. in summer
caterpillars and eggs can't stand the olive, that's why we have a small infestation
the big problem starts in autumn when the humidity rises
WHAT DAMAGE DOES DAKOS DO TO THE OLIVE?
The passage of the shaft through the olive has as a result
firstly, increased acidity and therefore degradation of the quality of the olive oil
And secondly and more seriously, various fungi enter through the hole
(gliospore cycloconium etc.) which attack the fruit causing it to rot and fall,
even causing total production destruction!
Therefore, it is necessary to take measures early so that we can intervene in time!
That's why we need the trap!
LET'S SEE THE PROCEDURE WHERE I PROPOSED
What is needed to build this trap is
-wire - water pipe - a gas lighter - a pair of pliers
- a piece of wood 1.5 liter bottles
and yellow plastic paint
1 Remove the labels from the bottles
2 remove the lids and make a hole in the middle
3 cut 4 cm pieces from a φ16 - φ18 tube
I had an old water hose and a yellow one at that which is even better
because this color attracts insects!
4 cut pieces of wire about 60 - 80 cm
with these we will hang the bottles on the trees
When we finish all the bottles
we take them and hang them in one place to paint them
with yellow plastic color from the pipes down.
As we said, we choose yellow because it attracts all the insects!
You paint them in any way that suits you best.
It will take at least two hands to pick up the paint
When they dry we are ready!
WHAT WE PUT INSIDE
When it's time to hang them up
We have to put inside each bottle
liquid that will attract the daco and kill it!
for this there are various solutions.
one is to put a kilogram of water with 3 tablespoons (3%) of ammonia sulfate
along with some insecticide
another to put an insect attractant (eg INSECTS with a ratio of 1 to 2 parts water)
with insecticide
or what else our agronomist suggests!
WHEN DO WE HANG AND HOW DO WE HANG TRAPS?
At the end of Spring we have to place the traps in the trees
to catch up with the first generation of dako,
which emerges from the ground where it overwintered
as soon as the heat starts!
The traps must be hung in the middle of the tree
in an open place round - round so that the dakos can easily find it
if the trees are big, put two in each one
if not one in every tree!
we should check regularly whether the water has evaporated due to heat
and refill the bait
In the middle of July we have an attack from the 2nd generation and in the middle of August the 3rd and 4th generation!!
Great care is needed in autumn when the humidity rises
and the temperature drops because then we have a lot of dako reproduction!
In this particular village this year, due to low humidity, we had no rain at all
Look how clean the olives were!
I hope you have them like this every year
