@@williamterry1701 there's no legacy, Roland was always "mainstream" - they always adjusted to what market dictated instead of leading it. Oberheim did poly? Here have Jupiter4. Sequential did programmable poly? Here have Jupiter 8. Yamaha did DX7? Here have a bunch of synths with membrane buttons and so on. Roland is not Moog, Sequential, Waldorf, Novation etc that have brands tied to a very specific synth niche. Most people want VSTs with knobs in 2022? We'll give them that.

@@wrmusic8736 I don't know I agree with all those points. You do make some good points however. To this day I've never heard another drum machine that sounds as crisp as an 808, in person, hooked up to a mixing board. I'd say in that point they have a pretty strong legacy in what that drum machine meant as far as sound quality, same thing with the 909.

Built-in rechargeable battery is almost an automatic hard pass for me when it comes to most devices these days. The damn things stop holding a decent charge right around the time the manufacturer quits making a replacement battery and then you're left with something that needs to be plugged in to ever work again. The Tb-3 is definitely a misunderstood future gem. I was underwhelmed at first but then I got my head around the designers concept. It's not a 303 with an experimental interface . Its a 3 flavour monosynth - 303 , Bass synth and Synth (we will ignore the percussionish sounds) . Plug it in as stereo and the reverb/delay effects become transformed. The only thing missing that would have vastly help sell it is a motion sequencer.

I actually like this instrument! I have the J-6 and it’s tons of fun. Linking the two together and being able to sketch chords, drums and bass lines on the couch seems fun. You can always easily route the midi out to other synths or VST’s later too if you want. The only thing holding me back from the T-8 is the drum selection…if they had just included a COUPLE more options for each drum hit….currently it’s a bit of a strange mish-mash. But I think it sounds pretty great, the built in 303 is cool to have and sidechaining, step-loop, fills, fx send amounts for each instrument, and being able to create polymeters simply by reducing the number of steps are all cool features

Hi …So nice of you to have made this comparison. So I recently got the T8 as my first drum machine. I am a guitarist trying to create a lofi jazz music (where previously I will take drums samples from splice and then compose jazz chords and solo on top of it). I wanted to get away from the DAW and got this box. I also have the SP404MK2. I played around with the T8 for a day learning and creating and within 24 hours I felt I could not use this for my regular music production because the sounds felt very acid/techno focussed. I was trying to create jazz and bossanova drum patterns. Also, I felt I can’t time-stretch the same note say over the (e,&,a) like I could on a DAW. I was struggling to understand how to do this and could not find a way. It felt like each beat tightly snaps to the pads and they can’t be extended or clubbed. If I want the same best on both 1 and e, and I place them on both then they are separate best and not the same beat over both of them. Which makes the beats very rigid. I tried decay and ascent on the notes but they are not able to solve the problem. Was there something I missed here? Anyway, I have now scheduled a return for the T8 because I felt limited with the sound. Instead I ordered, the volca drums and the volca sample 2, because I did not know which one will solve my problem (I will return one of them) I basically want to create rock/blues/jazz type on drums on this. Or even if that’s not fully possible, create beats which are not fully acid like the T8, but something where I can play ambient, post rock/indie rock type of guitar on top of it. Will you have any recommendations on how I should approach this ? And also among the T8, drum and sample2, which one will be the ideal one for me to pair with my sp404mk2 ? BTW, I had a lot of fun with the T8 for the 24 hours it was with me. I was pretty productive and also did a acid/techno ish live set :) So returning it felt bad in way. But I felt it was not going to help me create the type of sound I was chasing.

I've only just scratched the surface so far, but the sidechain functions can get pretty wild. I think that's the hidden card up the sleeve of this thing. I know it looks and feels like a toy, but don't underestimate what it's capable of.

Sidechain trigger off the toms (which sound bad/are bad anyway), put a cool rhythm on that track, SC gate the bass to maximum, increase the SC ratio, then mute the tom track. Could use the clap track instead, and fade that in and out, which also sounds cool.

I bought the J-6. That thing makes programming a 303 clone seem easy. So I didn't rush out and get the T-8 after that. Thanx again Florian. The highlight of my Saturday morning down under.

I have both and totally agree with you on the J-6. Weirdly the T-8 I find super intuitive to program or record patterns into. Seems so weird that they are in the same series. I am constantly wishing the J-6 programming was more like the T-8.

@@simonbcu I also agree. I couldn't really get my head around the J-6, but the T-8 is easy to learn and intuitive. Yes there is some menu diving, but it's all the less immediate features hidden behind the menus, and the menu system is methodical and well thought out. I'm not trying to excuse the 4-digit LCD display, a small OLED screen would have been much more useful, but overall they did a good job

if a new piece of equipment released just months ago is on bad gear, you know it’s worth buying. unlike the boutiques, i can actually afford to collect all of the aira compact machines 🤣

for those live dawless jams, do you pick the other machines at random or what made you pick a dr rhythm for example in this episode? i like these weird combinations

The DR-110 is VERY similar to the TR-606 most of the T-8 drum hits are modelled after so I thought the crash would be a nice complement and also put a focus on the lack of cymbals on the T-8

Sounds good to me mate. Proper (but limited range of) Roland drum style sounds. Good review too. I think Roland still make awesome gear. This unit is very cheap and quite cool but the small size factor and the potential usb power/noise issues might limit it in some setups But look, If you want a unit with knob per function hands on tweaking you're gonna have to pay for it. Ipads etc ain't my scene but it seems to me that these volca/rolca/polca pieces of kit would all benefit from optional app interface accessabilty over bluetooth.

I have the T-8 it's a very cool bit of kit, made much better once i added a set of trimmer toppers from THONK, much nicer to knob twiddle and color coded now! THE think i'd like to see would be pattern chaining at some point from a firmware update at some point in the future. overall i tihnk it's WAAAY more useful than any of my volcas... and the rechargeable battery is how it ought to be in 2022.

@@markuskoivisto I guess if they put proper outputs but these little machines all have 3.5 jacks now anyway, I'm used to it at this price. For $200 I would be ordering this thing now if it had individual outs.
@madelinehoyle1059

That's actually not that cheap to do. Relative to the rest of the cost of the unit. You're also going to run out of room on such a small device. Something like the TR-8S as a more professional unit of course has individual outs. There's also a management system for that which requires a display. I suppose you could do a very simplistic execution where the ports are switched and will pull an instrument out of the main mix if something's plugged in, but that also seems not ideal. You ideally want that on a patch by patch basis.

The cyclone beat bot has multiple outs, but there is some cross talk apparently, probably because everything is crammed so close together on the circuit board

I had all of them, kept the J-6 and the E-4 which are pure fun to play! Sold the T-8 which sounds good, but is too small for jamming. the Output connection ist too close to the CutOff control knob and the menu diving is quite boring.
