My go-to synth for years. Its simplicity and versatility are its strength. But I think its versatility comes mainly from its user oscillator, and I would never bought one without that huge feature. Tom Shoebridge's OSCs are awesome, among others. It's a multi genre synth. I constantly find ideas with just by browsing sounds, tweaking knobs and effects etc. 80% of my jams use at last one XD. It's so good that I acquired a second one recently. Not only it doubles the polyphony in polychain mode but I got to reuse the user oscillators I bought. Yes, modulation is limited. But that's enough for making great jams/prods. Love that tiny hybrid synth!! Thanks for that video, because I do think it's still underrated. And I love the key bed (the keys size especially). It's a great synth when you are a beginners, it's still a fun guy when you're a seasoned home studio enthusiast, IMHO.

Im planing to buy another used module, to tower them ontop of eachother xD. it will be more flexible than a bi-timbral prologue, cause each can be tweak, motion/sequence independently, but most importantly, the footprint of one is good enough to be taken to the couch to do chill sound design

@TooSlowTube

Maybe it's the result of digitising it. You don't get to hear the analog parts directly, You only get to hear it digitised then converted back to audio, after the effects section. My main gripe is that the saved patches don't contain all the information for the digital oscillators, so if I make a patch I like with those involved and save it, what I load back next time can be quite different. I really liked it at first, and still have it, but that's put me off playing it for some time now.
@ianmorton1799
18 сағат бұрын
@@TooSlowTubeThat's odd, I've had one since they came out and over the last year I've been mostly using the digital oscillator, partly because it never goes out of tune and partly because I had made about as many unique analog patches as I could with that synth architecture...but I never have had issues with the patch loading differently from the time before. Might be an issue to contact Korg support about.
@cornoc
9 сағат бұрын
@@TooSlowTube It's not the result of digitizing anything. You don't get to hear analog "directly" no matter what unless you're listening to the analog outs through an analog mixer on your speakers or headphones. By the time audio is in your DAW, or you're listening to it on Spotify or Bandcamp, you're hearing it digitized. It doesn't matter. As long as you're using a reasonable bit depth like 16-bit or higher, it's more or less perfectly reproduced within the bandwidth the sample rate allows, according to Shannon-Nyquist sampling theorem (at least as far as human hearing can detect), with some quantization noise floor depending on the bit depth (at 24-bit or higher, you're not hearing this unless your monitoring is ludicrously loud, especially while other sounds are playing).
@TooSlowTube
7 сағат бұрын
@@cornoc I don't use a DAW for any of that, only to host Ctrlr for setting up MIDI controllers to control hardware, or occasionally to play free VST instruments. So, yes, normally if I play an analog synth what I'm hearing is analog, not digitised.

Thanks for covering this "bad gear," it's always nice seeing what you have to say about these machines! The XD is great, but it really shines when you sync it to grooveboxes or a drum machine. I noticed none of the visual examples of the synth show its sequencer running at a non-default resolution: you can get a lot out of it by (i.e.) turning down the resolution to 1 step per bar and having 16 steps of pad/arp/chord motion sequenced...all before you even consider the FX chain! If you're using it for its sequencing, the 4 motion lanes that control almost anything give you back a lot of what you lose in traditional modulation.

Another fantastic episode, this time on my FAVORITE piece of gear... you can have my XD module when you can pry it from my cold dead fingers! great video/jams as always man. I had a feeling this was going to be one of those "Good Gear" episodes lol it's easily the best beginner synth imo (it was my first one, still have it) - I absolutely adore it. After a year I realized the limitations & got more robust gear but I'll never sell mine (maybe my secondary module version, I don't like the way it poly-chains)

worth mentioning, most of the tracks on my profile were made with one plus some outside effects like overdrive/distortion
