Well, this was sold as bad, and it is bad. It was cheap, and too tempting to try and get my first FH drive. It didn’t work out but allows us to see its nice internal construction.
This drive is acting really strange. When the BIOS of the PC tries to detect the drive, it re-does its seektest. Then I get a primary master hard drive error. I actually managed to get past the BIOS by using my working ESDI drive (with the settings of the IBM set manually, as they don’t have the same number of heads and cylinders), then switching to the IBM after. I was able to LLF the drive using SGATFMT4.exe that way, which then allowed HDMotion to run. I also got speedsys going. However, as soon as something tries to recall the drive, it does the same thing as when the BIOS tries to detect it and stops doing anything. Trying to format it appears to work until the end, when trying to write the FAT fails and does the same thing as the recalls.
What’s strange is, since the LLF got through, it can write, yet the write after the format fails. also, while the recalls fails, it seems like the heads are correctly going to track 0? I wonder if there’s something wrong on the PCB rather than the actual mechanical parts... I took a look at the platters when I had it open, and I did not notice anything obviously wrong.
