It happened to me on my first visit to Bangkok back in 1987, I lost all my money/traveler cheques after only 2 days on the ground and only had 200 Baht left! Luckily I still had an expensive new Nikon camera that I managed to sell a few days later for 14000 baht! I still had almost 3 months left on my holiday though (back then swedish citizens got 3 months visafree). I found a cheap GH on Soi Sri Bamphen for 50/night. I didn´t want to admit defeat and go home earlier! I had read that Koh Samui in those days was a cheap place to stay so I took a nonaircon bus to Surat Thani and then the ferry across to Koh Samui and went to Mae Nam Beach where I found a simple hut on the beach for only 30 baht /night! I then lived cheap beachlife for the reminder of my stay. Food was only 10-20 baht a dish back then and local fruit was plenty, so I managed to hang on til a few days before my flight back home almost 3 months later, when I took the ferry/bus back to BKK for a couple of days before I flew home! 😄

I think it was my 8th or 9th holiday here and I left my debit card 💳 on the dining room table! It was the only card that I usually bring. I did have about $2k cash so it wasn’t a cheap Charlie holiday like “Jeff’s”! I had made many good friends here and one of them was the owner of the resort in Bang Sayre that I wanted to stay at again. I told him that I couldn’t stay this time because of the debit card 💳 issue and he r said stay and just send him the money when I got back! That’s what I did and had a great holiday!

Rrrright.....it's still a country's prerogative to allow or deny entry. OK, Ok, ok......UNLIKE, with what is happening at the USA's southern border. But, that's not the subject here. So then, I also have the "emergency medical" fear. Yes, I should buy travel insurance. But, so far, I've never done it. Call it gambling dangerously with chance.

Just goes to show you don’t need a ton of money to enjoy yourself in Pattaya as a “Cheap Charlie”. His saving grace was finding that 3000 baht a month Thai style 2nd story walk up. My own “Cheap Charlie” 30 day stay EMERGENCY packing list includes a Chinese alcohol stove and pot for cooking noodles, a couple of 1/2 gallon double insulated wide mouth thermos jugs, one for hot water and one for 7-11 iced water. If course, clothes packed for the trip are all light weight quick dry fabric which can be quickly washed and hung up to dry. I don’t think I could do w/o air con though. Jeff’s digs looks too much like Charlie Sheens Saigon hotel room in “Apocalypse Now”. I might have to find a place that could sell me a used portable air com unit, buy the cheapest one on Lazada for the stay, or get the cheapest air con walk up. You got me in the story about the person who offered her Thai bank account! I thought she had scammed him, and I said " Ohh no, poor man" then you clarified you were kidding 😁. Great story, Mr Lucas!
all that could have been prevented by wearing a money belt as i have done for my Pattaya journeys from London and back, i always have about 1500 baht (from my previous trip) for buying sim card and paying taxi (if i use a taxi i normally use Bell bus service) on arrival at hotel i put most of my £'s into a personal safe that i bring with me (brilliant thing that i bought off Amazon) plus my debit card and passport, i take some £'s and then visit a money change booth, i will change enough for about 3 days: and basically thats it im sorted, safe and secure, as much as i can be, money wise it was a shame that travellers cheques became to expensive to use in Thailand as i used to have those. Its always baffled me why tourists would put everything into a wallet that can be pick pocketed, lost, misplaced etc, of an evening i will take about 5000 baht at most 6,000 out with me (or much less) depending on what i plan to do, so at worst thats all i will lose in a worst case scenario, but im not a big drinker at all so im aware of the possibilities of pick pockets, really it just takes a bit of common sense to be pretty safe in Pattaya cheers

Struggled with what to respond with to this punter... but if you can't remember what you did with your wallet, and have blackouts... perhaps you should give up drinking... if you aren't aware of your surroundings in a foreign country, perhaps you should stay home and lock the doors... some people should not be let out of their country... having said that, having to learn how to be a cheap charlie in a foreign country, isn't much of a vacation... He was just lucky that there are so many cheap charlie venues in PTY... Imagine if he was in another country where this was not available... Albet, perhaps you should talk to owners and get their take on the cheap charlie situation... My soundings are, A LOT of them are fed up with the situation and are about to change their menus to CURRENT price realities... instead of losing money... as a vendor catering to the cheap charlie segment is a recipe for disaster... trying to make it up on volume is subject to the whims of a unstable demographic... Market realities should be driving your business, not the "whims" of a set of outspoken know-it-alls on social media who don't even come to your venue, and are telling you how to run YOUR business...
