Never ceases to amaze me how resilient these animals are! I was just reading an old AB thread about a spider who lost ALL legs and both palps. The keeper manually fed liquified prey, and they molted out perfectly and are still alive to this day! Hope your girl makes it, what a fighter!

She is so incredibly inspirational. Seriously! Her tenacity to survive, to eat, to _live_ is breathtaking. 🤩😍🥰 I'm obviously not a spider expert, but I'm actually really encouraged by what you've shown- especially her feeding response! That's great news! I'm really sorry she lost the legs, but maybe a clean break (absolutely NO pun intended) will put her ahead for her next molt? Might it be easier now that she doesn't have to extricate new legs from old twisted ones? Her new pedipalps are rather adorable, btw... 😊 Thank goodness it was legs and not her abdomen, though! I was scared at first when I saw that tangled mess in the corner that the worst had happened... I'm soooo happy that she still has a chance! I am cautiously optimistic that she is going to pull through and completely heal up and get back to her happy arboreal life. She deserves it- and so do you for taking such exemplary care of her through her struggles! Way to go for getting her this far! 😄

Thanks for the update, Tom! If anyone can bring her back, you can 😊👍. You bring up a good point about moisture in the enclosure during this time. There's another popular content provider that has made a statement multiple times about the insignificance of moisture in the substrate at this time, saying that all of the needed moisture is within the spider. It was nice to hear my belief in proper substrate moisture importance, especially at this time. Thanks again for excellent content and good luck. We all are wishing her the best!

Friendly suggestion Tom, I worry with her limited mobility on one side, she will be putting a lot of stress on her good legs. I would recommend putting sphagnum moss or something similar on the ground, to cover it. It may help absorb some of the pressure and avoid her getting sores or something horrible on her legs, carapace, or abdomen. I really hope she comes out of it! She looks full of life still, we are rooting for her!
@TomsBigSpiders
2 жыл бұрын
I would worry about coating everythign with sphagnum as they generally don't like walking on spongy surfaces. Now that she's molted, she actually stays off of the sphagnum. She hangs out on the side of the enclosure or on her cork most of the time now, and she seems to be okay. I'll definitely keep an eye on her, though. Thank you!

I'm sorry she had another bad moult. It's good she is eating. I guess the previous damage made it hard for get to moult? I really hope she continues to improve. Good her pedipalp grew back. After arriving my new Gbb sling had a bad moult. I left helping too long (scared to damage such a small baby) so it had hardened. I got it off but my sling dropped a leg. He/she seems fine, eats well & flicks hair at me. I'm just worried for another bad moult xx

I was just having a conversation with Dave’s little beasties about this. It takes a few molts for the legs to go back to normal. And that’s in cases way less severe than this. If it’s steadily improving there’s no need to consider euthanasia. Tarantulas don’t feel pain the same way mammals do. They know their injured, but their not actively stressed from it.

Hello! I said that at the end of the first part of the video before I was able to see if she could eat (the feeding part was weeks later). The plan was that, as long as she was still able to eat, I would nurture back to health. Euthanasia was only ever going to be a last resort. I have had spiders grow legs back before, so I know the amazing powers of their regeneration. Also, this was the second bad molt she had in a row, which was why I was a little more concerned. Thanks!

@@TomsBigSpiders I was just reinforcing what you said, sorry if I repeated it. This molt may not have been good, but it wasn’t as bad as the last one. It didn’t loose more appendages and the part you pulled off was going to come off anyway like you said. I should of emphasized that this particular specimen is going to have more imperfect molts. But like you said it got the pedipalps back. So it is improving. Sorry if I worded it wrong. I know you know what you’re doing.

Hiya Tom such a shame 1 of my phormingochilus sp rufus sling's 2cm had a very bad molt the other day it was all the way out on 1 side but on the other side all her 4 legs and pedipalp were completely stuck and parts of her abdomen were also stuck and with her being so small 2cm there was nothing I could do to help her out so I had no choice but to put her in the freezer so now I'm down to just the 1 p sp rufus sling now that 1s moulted twice and is doing great look forward to your next video buddy stay safe. 😊 👍

Hi Tom, I've been following your channel after a long hiatus (25+yrs) away from keeping Tarantula's and love your channel. I have been wondering about your Pokie as my Monocentropous Balfori had a bad molt as well. I got her from FNT and was part of my original 3 I got. My Pelenobius Muticus is now 4 inches DLS from 1.75 and my OBT that was half an inch matured out male several months ago. I have 28 Ts now!! Bit hard by that T bug!! Back to my girl, she lost her pedipalp and front 2 legs on the left side. The next leg over is jacked up and the one behind that is misshapen and her legs on the right don't look the best! Over a month before I got her to eat a pre-killed cricket and only seemed to eat after I took the small water dish I kept near her out. She has ate again , moves about webbing away as Mon. Bal. should, and seems like she will be fine. My worries lie with her whole left side and that really bum leg. No way could I remove it and stress/hurt her anymore than was already done! But that leg does worry me. Man, wish there was a safe and effective way to anesthetize a T. When I first found her like this I thought it was much worse and this grown man did shed a few tears. Sometimes think it would be easier just to lose them than to see them hurting. One positive out of this is her wounds all healed naturally! Ts are truly remarkable animals!! Keep up the great work Tom!!!!!! +

Hello . just been recommend your channel by you tube . poor spider and so nice that you care .did you breed her ? Wondering if it could be a genetic problem as you are preparing her so well for moulting that it's obviously not your fault.

Well, welcome, Eve...thanks for checking me out! I did not breed her; I brought her up from a sling. She might have just had something undetectable wrong with her. Hopefully, the next one goes well!

Tbh I think she's doing better since she has her pedipalps even though she's missing 3 legs on one side. Next molt should have her fixed up! Still sad to see her like that though. But I see this update as a plus.

I had a P. Platyomma who had a bad molt that left him with a couple wonky legs. With the next molt it seems like the upturned legs made it had to get out, so this molt seemed worse than the first. Then with the third molt he died

Love the new intro music! Threw me for a loop at 1st! Anyways, I have a question... does anyone know wtf is up with a terrestrial pretending to be an arboreal??? My Tliltocati albopilosus periodically hangs vertically on the back of her stone hide. She started doing it right after I changed her hide due to mold. Stayed there for almost a wk. Then she finally came down onto the substrate & stayed there for almost a wk, ate a couple meals...now she's back up there! I have her on the Bio dude substrate, does anyone think she has an issue with it? Or if I'm maybe keeping her too humid? (The substrate seems dry to me) Or is she just a weirdo? LoL

Hi,, Twitchy Witch! Sometimes terrestrial spiders will act arboreal because they don't like the feel of their supbstrate. For example, if it's too moist or, if using dry coco fiber, it's too fluffy. Sometimes, they just do weird things! haha I have a buddy with an H. pulchripes that thinks that she's arboreal. haha
