I second that emotion, shame they didn't just stick to music instead of assuming anyone wants to listen to their political propoganda

I really like this album, I think it's underrated. It's a good rock n roll record, and it has a lot of very good guitar work on it.

Love the symbolism of the album cover but probably didn't help move units and would have better served as an inner sleeve. "Timeless" and "Constitution" are really peak examples of Pete's guitar playing - you can feel the way he worked out every note in advance. Keep the Badfinger reviews coming John!

Badfinger is such an underrated band. Wish they had kept Todd Rundgren as a producer. "Apple of My Eye" is a terrific song.

Hey John, great review as always! Badfinger is one of the most underrated bands of the 70s in my opinion and as you said it’s so sad what ended up happening with them after leaving Apple; Wish You Were Here is such a great album and it should have been much bigger than it was. Also on an unrelated note, I was wondering if you plan on doing any more Beach Boys album reviews in the future? I saw that you’ve covered a few of theirs already in the past like Pet Sounds and Surf’s Up, but if you have any of their other late 60s/early 70s albums I’d love to hear your take on them! (I’m a huge Beach Boys fan if you couldn’t tell lol) Cheers from this 22 year old from Chicago haha

Saw them twice, once in Chicago, and once in Wisconsin. ( they did "Timeless" )They were a very tight band back then. Pete was always the hit maker. You'll hear mixed stories with this band, but at that time , they were out selling everyone on that label. I Bought their first 45 on Apple the day it was released " Maybe Tomorrow " i just happened to stumble across it buried in the bin. zero airplay. None. They were a great band, Who got a bad deal. Apple was in shambles back then.

Nice review, John. It's a pretty good lp. Only 3 months between "Ass" and their 1st lp. for Warners, which was the beginning of their bad luck. " I Miss You" was not a good choice for a single, " Shine On" is! 😊 Good stuff John!

The CD I have sounds consistently good, however, I don't hear a hit song. The first and last songs are beautiful, but there is no short, poppy “Baby Blue” or “Day after Day.” “Apple of My Eye” and “Timeless” are like “Name of the Game” or “Take It All” - longer, epic-sounding pieces. There are really no hits after the Straight Up album to my ear. I don't know what accounts for this. And I wish I could have seen Joey play - he played the county fair in Simcoe, Ontario, Canada, with Rick Derringer back in 2015. I grew up listening to the band, and it was rumored during high school in the early 70s that they played locally. So I will always regret missing that show in 2015. That is, unless I see him buying furniture at some Goodwill somewhere. He likes pointing out in his interviews that he was reduced to buying furniture at Goodwill after the unfortunate break up of the band. Maybe he still does it, living in Minnesota. Pete & Tom were my favorite writers, but I always liked Joey's song “I Don't Mind.” It had a real, cool hippie, druggy vibe that I liked in high school. Those were the times.

the band members being screwed over so severely finding the cover art meaningful makes me think it's fitting (sadly). joey molland lived in minnesota when i lived there and played around town. i'm glad you got to meet him. i watched an ELO video from 87 with a lot of your 40 favorites on it. i always learn from you and am going to read and look at the nancy lee andrews book today thanks to you. "with a little luck" is a paul song with huge meaning for me and i never heard anyone say it mattered at all let alone was their favorite.

Good album. Better than the self-titled warner brothers record shortly after. Not even close to their 6th album Wish You Were Here, which i praise as their absolute best. To me, the album cover matches the music inside. A lone donkey not impressed with the big heavenly carrot promised them and moving on.

@@johnheaton5667 John, you must have the UK 1973 pressing in which the year is noted underneath the SAPCOR.27B printing. The 1996 UK pressing with the bonus track Do You Mind does not mention 1973 at all nor does it list any of the songwriting credits as the 1973 edition does.

@@johnheaton5667 "Apple of My Eye" would have been a pretty standard issue Pete Ham ballad, which is to say pretty good, but, as you pointed out, the production was abysmal... IMHO, none of the rest of the songs would have been considered for their previous albums.... Peace and Love Terry and Julia Tutor
