With the demise of Air Berlin new players arise on Europe’s skies. Besides the extreme growth of Eurowings, easyJet takes over some oft he former Air Berlin routes. For enthusiasts, the future bears most of the same, A320 series and maybe toe one or other 737NG. And to be honest, it doesn’t make that much of a difference by what airline the planes are operated. The in flight product is the same, planes are the same, everything is so common nowadays.
Luckily, with easyJet ramping up operations, they seemed to be short on planes or crews, and therefore wet leased some aircraft. While most are A320, they at least got a hand on some real aircraft as well. There is one single Condor 757-300 flying between Munich and Berlin, and of course there are two BAe 146 of WDL, one 300 operating Tegel to Zurich, and a 200 flying between Tegel and Vienna.
This is a once in a lifetime chance to still catch a classic BAe and not an Avro. Once upon a time they were common and all over the world, now especially in Europe, classic BAe’s are rare flying metal.
WDL is a company that operates for other airlines as a business model. Therefore they are really good in what they do and feature a stunning easyJet performance. Most passengers actually don’t even recognize the wet lease aircraft, to them it’s easyJet.
For us enthusiasts it is a welcome chance to not fly on an Airbus or Boeing, but on something rather rare these days, a British airliner.
The flight from Tegel to Vienna was very pleasant, and as a matter of fact even really comfortable in a 3+3 BAe. The extra leg space makes up for the tighter fitting to the sides, again depending on your size.
The take off was filmed from row 1, the landing from row 10. Hopefully lots of enthusiasts find the time and money to spend some wonderful minutes aboard the WDL BAe 146s, it sure is worth it!
