So I came here to search were the controller actually fits onto the motor, as I’m thinking about running duel battery set up on my bbshd trek xcalibar Only thing I would have done different is battery mount position on top bar between front bar neck & seat pole. As down where it is going to cope a lot abuse from debris & water especially in wet conditions it’s going to flick up off front tyre. So yeah, would mounted it higher on top bar but almost as far back to were sit pole fits into frame.

EQ; YES, we have had problems with the plastic tabs breaking, but it sounds like we ride harder than Doug. Check the mounting screws are tight regularly (disconnect the drive unit from the battery rack before trying to tighten the screw under the connector pins so you don't zap your controller from the charge it holds), and we use nylon & Velcro straps to take the strain. we used the largest sheet-metal screws we could, so no pull-outs, but Doug's use of riv-nuts is way better.

@DougHnut

whats the cell arrangement? mine is 13s4p so technically i should have a max output of 19.5A. whats weird is that i don't have any issues(besides some battery connectors melting), even when im pulling 1500-1300watts(~25-30amps) for a solid minute. yes there is a bit of battery sag, but it does recover quickly. feeling the battery case, it never gets warm
@ML-hf6ii
6 жыл бұрын
You calmed me down a bit. My will be little bigger 13s5p = 17ah, so absolute max current will be 24 amps. But still, someone experienced with e-bikes tell me that battery can get hot after fast, hard rides and also it will last less charging cycles. And also that, it will be best for battery if you use something about 75% of it's max current - it will last longer then. I read the same on many materials on internet - shame is that it is after i buy this battery :) I also read that now one of the best cells for powerful ebikes is LG mj1, it has great capacity (3400mah) but also high max current - 10A. Next battery I will for sure build from this cell. (sory for my bad english - I'm still learning :))
@DougHnut
6 жыл бұрын
sorry i missed this reply, i think it also depends on what kind of riding you planning to do. if you planning to pull a trailer or do a lot of full throttle uphill climbing. you can just program the bafang unit to limit the amps. mine is set to 30 amps max(been riding like this for over 600km no problem so far). i have a video show you how to program the bbshd in my electric bike playlist. that lg mj1 sound really nice, but probably really expensive to build. id prefer the Samsung 30Q(10A and 3000mah) or just more cells in parallel like a EM3ev large triangle pack 14s9p

Hello Doug, I have TWO questions for you: 1) What would be the minimalist Bafang mid drive build to turn a manual bike into an ebike? I ask this because I am not a big fan of too many wires sticking around the bike frame as I see them time and again in installation videos. Can I do a simple build with just a mid drive motor and a thumb (or twist) throttle? I assume that the throttle is the only key element needed to control the motor. I could care less about the LCD display, the speed, or changing the power of the motor as the gears change especially as I ride on the highest gear no matter what the terrain! 2) Is it a good idea to build ebike on a single-speed bike that can coast? Having no gear derailleur would further simplify my ebike especially when I do not use the gears anyway. The less is actually more and simpler! Please advise.
@DougHnut
6 жыл бұрын
1) the motor has a internal cadence sensor which will sense you pedaling and engage the motor to provide assist. so you dont need the throttle for it to work. yes you can remove the display, power/menu button and throttle by following this guide www.poweredride.com/info/dump-your-bafang-display-for-stealth-and-better-display-options. i would also suggest a small battery pack like the luna mighty mini and hang it off the seat. 2) single speed ebikes will work fine. a mid drive single speed would not be as efficient as a geared hub drive single speed, but the mid drive will give a cleaner install because of its internal speed controller. if you start with a multi-speed bike, you can always convert to a single speed later on

@DougHnut

for simplicity of installation, i think they are worth it. the only mid drive that i would consider is the cyclone kits. they make more power, have an external speed controller, require custom brackets to secure the motor, and no nice display. if you dont mind the extra work and noise(chain drive vs gear drive) i would recommend the cyclone kits. i chose the Bafang kit because there was more online support, wiring was much cleaner and i really like that i was done installing within a few hours

mine is about 70mm. they come in 3 size ranges. i got the normal one 68-73mm. the other two sizes are usually meant for fat bikes

I'd avoid any jumps because that wheel is at risk of colliding with your battery with it mounted there.

I'm buying a Luna kit for my Raleigh Kodiak 2 and I have to do the same under tube mount. No bottle cage mount and I cringe at the thought of drilling into my new frame😕
@DougHnut

awesome!. the two other options other than drilling is 6" hose clamps(2 or 3 should be enough) around the whole battery or use smaller hose clamps to hold a custom bottle mount plate to your frame

Doug Hnut Thinking about it, the rivet nut is the same as factory bottle holder mounts. Clamps look like trash. My🏍 is about finished so this is my next project. I'm going to build a custom frame battery box but I'm starting with the undertube mount. Thanks for replying.

Dick; YES, we have had problems with the plastic tabs breaking, but it sounds like we ride harder than Doug. Check the mounting screws are tight regularly (disconnect the drive unit from the battery rack before trying to tighten the screw under the connector pins so you don't zap your controller from the charge it holds), and we use nylon & Velcro straps to take the strain. The lower center of gravity is worth it.

I also have a double suspension Mongoose that I plan to upgrade. The motor also sits a little lower than I would like, but considering that the crank is 1 inch higher than in a regular bike, the end result is not that bad

its been ok, i broke my chain.. then got new chain, cheap cassette and a lekkie front ring gear. chain is now slipping on the new cassette. i think i need a matching cassette and chain. i have since sold my 48V battery and am waiting on a 52v battery, so i haven't ridden it in awhile. but it was fun when when everything else was working. i even completely submerged the front and rear wheels on a flooded bike path, motor shut off, and was able to turn back on after i got out of it.

If this one goes as planned I am converting my other HUB motor to mid drive . I ordered my kit from Matt at EMPowered cycles and he included the spacers I needed for one of my bikes I needed the 100mm BBSHD I also ordered the additional 42T Red Lekkie Bling Ring for better torque rather than the 46 UGLY STEEL stock one. I decided NOT to buy the shift sensor right now so will see if I really need one. I was on the phone with him for over an hour or so just to make sure I had every measurement correct and everything I would need in the Kit. I went even further and purchased the EMP Full Color DPC-14 and M33 installation socket tools rather than the wrenches that others offer I will be able to use an impact gun to tighten everything down to specs toque settings . He even offered to BUY BACK the M33 installation socket tools after I am done with Install. I will probably keep them because they will come in handy later on when I convert the other Fat Bike

Pharroh Ku that's good. Looks like you have done all the research and asked the right questions. I want a better ring gear, but it already is really close to the chain stay. I also did not get the shift sensor and I feel I'm ok with out it. Just shift into a lower gear before comming to a complete stop. That also really good you got the m33 tool mine actually came loose because I didn't tighten it enough. I now have the tool on order. But now a pry bar and hammer to tighten it further.

the ones I ordered are SOCKETS and can use an impact gun to put them on I was thinking about buying the wrenches before but Now am glad I ordered the Sockets because I have watched a few videos having that problem with loosening up and I did not want to have that problem. when done I will post pix or maybe a videos or 2 testing it out but unfortunately I do not have any mountains like yours The sockets are only 60 dollars for both sockets

texxs01 no problems. I have added a single strap for when I go down a mountain. I've inspected the platisc tabs that slide into the battery mount and they shown no signs of fatigue.

Doug Hnut thanks for the info. It greatly increases the number if bike that I could convert to electric. BTW, Luna Cycle is now offering one with the "upside-down" mounted battery like that and they are just using magnets supposedly.

you are right, i didn't have the right tool to tighten it properly. i ended up using a hammer and pry bar to hammer it tight, and its been holding even after a few runs down our local mountian

Jai D; we just used Big channel-lock pliers to tighten the mounting nuts. They will loosen slightly and need to be re-torqued a couple of times before it is Solid. we also put a thin chunk of hard rubber between the drive nd the downtube to protect both.

Drilling holes into an aluminium frame it’s the biggest mistake you can make when doing a conversion. Now that bike can’t no longer do jumps or stunts.
@stoyanoo
3 жыл бұрын
Bullshit. Couple of holes won't compromise anything. Mine works Just fine, and with this kit I highly doubt you Will want to do "stunts". Maybe small jumps, stair gaps but for sure no A line.

Battery hits the front wheel ?
@davebrown5804
4 жыл бұрын
DJ; on my Stab Deluxe I have my battery mounted as close to my BBSHD as possible (much closer than Doug did), and with a lesser fork than the Bomber, the front tire could contact my battery during the severe compression on approach to the big jumps at our local bike park. With the original Bomber back on (& now with an older Fox 40) I have had no more tire contact. As Doug said, the BBSHD is lower than we'd like for some trails, and I have high-centered going over logs.
