Bahamas National History Conference: Virtual Webinar Series
Session 5
Bahamian Marine Megafauna
July 8th @ 11 AM EST to 1:00 PM EST
The ocean is full of wonders; coral reefs provide homes to important economic species such as crawfish and grouper and tourists flock to our shores to soak up sand, sand, and sea.
The ocean is home to millions of different species across the world. Among them are the marine megafauna; large organisms that call the oceans their home. The Bahamas is known for its healthy shark population, which gave rise to the country becoming a Shark Sanctuary in 2011. Other organisms include whales and dolphins, which use the deep channels between islands and banks to traverse, rays, including the elusive and critically endangered smalltooth sawfish, and others, such as sea turtles.
This week, we will be hearing about both historical and recent work done of some of these incredible animals within our waters.
Featured speakers:
Dr. Dean Grubbs, Associate Director of Research, Florida State University
Dr. Austin Gallagher, Chief Executive & Lead Scientist, Beneath the Waves
Matt Smukall, President & CEO, Bimini Biological Field Station
Duncan O'Brien, Collaborator, The Centre for Ocean Research & Education
