Hey Teresa. I so love Bake Off, it got me into making cakes. But bread is SO hard! I use a bread machine. What do you think of that? I use a rice cooker because it makes better rice. Bread chemistry is Hard! Is a bread machine okay for a cake-maker?

Just want to put a word in for whomever it is this year who got the best job in television: Filming b-roll for The Great British Bake Off. For bread week they treated us to some lovely baby ducks, can’t wait to see what else comes up and if we ever again will reach the dizzying heights of that squirrel with the nuts...you know the one.

Is it just me, or does anybody else miss in earlier seasons when they used to have a little segment in the middle of the show where one of the hosts would go off and learn a little history of a type of baked good they were doing that week? Like, Mel talks to food historian Dr. Annie Gray about the origins of the spotted dick pudding, or whatever. It was a feature on the series that was airing the year I'd just moved to the UK from Canada, and it was really nice to learn some really niche food stuff about my new home. They could have done a history feature on the rainbow bagel this week - which would have been nicer than Paul for some reason glossing over the fact that they were created for LGBT pride, but whatever *eyeroll sound*

Maybe that segment was hard to do this year due to Covid? Like the historian or whoever would also have to quarantine in order to be added into the show’s bubble. So I imagine they just wanted to simplify things this year for that reason. But that’s just a theory. 😅
@SamiKelsh
3 жыл бұрын
@@TheNitpickChick Granted, it'd be a lot more difficult this year, though it's been quite a few series since they did the segment at all. I think pretty much at least since they moved from the BBC to Channel 4, so maybe I'm just in the extreme minority missing it!

This is probably the first GBBO season, I've seen, that I don't feel very strongly about who will make it to the final. It seems like Peter has a good shot because, while gluten-free baking may be his downfall later on, he appears to have some technical knowledge for certain bakes and good flavors. Also, there are quite a few closed captioning errors.

This show is so delightful on top of an already delightful program. I'm glad for the clarification about test kitchens. I think in Week 1, Irish Mark baked things for different times on each rack which made me wonder if he had tested using those ovens. Also, Paul did wear an unbutton shirt this week, which does feel more casual, so maybe there's still hope for a less "clean" look from him in the future.

ps the UK bakeries actually have a bunch of varieties of bread and loaves - some bakeries that’s all they have. It’s definitely a mix of savoury and sweet, usually more heavy on savoury (cheese twists/straws are a huge staple and are so, so good) but you can almost always find gingerbread men in a bakery. i don’t know why that’s the one regular sweet thing. You’d think it’d be something like a chelsea bun. And I apologise for how much we love walnuts. We love almonds too and as someone who hates almonds, i can (sort of) empathise.

I will say, I fully believe the season with James, Brendan, and John was the perfect hero's journey story. Brendan was clearly the super villain that created the baking robot James -- but programmed to flounder and fail in the end, in order for Brendan to win. Of course he tried to butter up Mary Berry to gain extra points and somehow sabotaged John into getting the injury...but low and behold the story has a happy ending regardless! :P Teasing and silliness aside, I teared up for my lovely John. I still love to see how happy and successful his life seems to be on instagram.

i can't believe y'all didn't discuss this as such careful watchers, but... i was *slightly* annoyed that paul sliced the loaves differently during the signature judging. most of them he did his usual, where he cuts the whole loaf right down the center to expose potential underdone-ness. other loaves, however, he sliced right on the edge ensuring that he'd get the most done portion. i don't think it necessarily means anything, but considering how tame judging was for bread week, i wonder if it had something to do with it. plus, as you mention, paul always plays faves (sometimes too much, cough ruby cough) and i do think it was a couple of his faves that got the "favorable" cut during the signature.
