Cleaning up old videos, I found this information session for students interested in joining Bakuhatsu Taiko Dan in the Fall of 2020, while classes and campus life were online. I am sharing and archiving it here because I think that it is of significance in that it (1) documents emic understandings and attitudes of taiko history by collegiate players, (2) highlights this team's trajectory towards social justice work and in recognizing complex origins and meanings within taiko musics, and (3) demonstrates how collegiate taiko players adapted to online teaching.
I took the position of Artistic Director/Practice Director during this online year. It was a difficult time, but looking back, I'm happy about what we were able to accomplish. Watching this again, I am very proud of Gen 19 for this presentation. I feel comfortable sharing it, as I originally authored many of the recycled slides/figures and advised the presenters here. The full recording was edited to remove the post-presentation open discussion.
This past weekend, Bakuhatsu Taiko Dan hosted the 2023 Intercollegiate Taiko Invitational. From the other side, it's nice to see them continue to learn and grow together, taking on new challenges.
