Interestingly enough, BALANCE OF TERROR was cribbed from a popular war movie in release just a few years prior. THE ENEMY BELOW was a World War II themed story that pitted Robert Mitchum's captain of a US Navy Destroyer Escort against a Nazi U-boat commander played by Curt Jurgens. The U-Boat is trying to get back to base after destroying several allied ships and the DE is trying to track him down. The U-Boat commander tries everything included releasing oil slick after a depth charge attack, and launching garbage, debris and the body of his dead XO through the torpedo tubes in a failed effort to elude the Navy captain; maneuvers given a slightly different rendering in the Star Trek episode. Regardless, BALANCE OF TERROR and THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE remain my favorite TOS episodes.

As a result of the alien race called The Preservers who transfered different human and humanoid cultures throughout the galaxies, as pointed out by Spock in the third season episode, The Paradise Syndrome. The Vulcans, you see here, now Romulans, are the ones that refused to listen and follow Surik's teaching of pure logic and dispencing of emotions on his planet Vulcan and devoting their lives to peace and Nome, which means pure brotherhood. These violent Vulcans continued to act savagely, until they were completely removed and transfered to the Romulus Remus section of the galaxy whare they could form a different way of culture and begin to either accept peaceful conditions, or continue to be warlike until they can and will fully mature and become civilized.

Here's what I don't buy about this. Hanson said he was almost a mile deep in an asteroid that was almost solid iron. This means the asteroid was a least 2 miles thick, and probably bigger than that. The amount of energy it would take to destroy such a mass would be enormous. It's hard to believe that a ship only equipped with impulse engines which run on fusion generators, could generate enough energy to fire such a weapon over and over. I mean, it would probably take a fusion blast of at least 1000 megatons to destroy one of those asteroids.
@Idazmi7
5 жыл бұрын
The asteroid was also shielded, and armored with a fictional metal several times stronger than diamond. You'll find that Star Trek's weapons and power outputs are - consistently - incredibly powerful compared to their contemporaries in science fiction across the board. Just an example: the Enterprise can carry bombs that generate double-digit _petaton_ yields, enough to obliterate the surface of a planet in one go. The reason for this is simple: how much energy do you think it actually takes to travel from one star system to another in your lifetime?
@STho205

Eric Smith. Next thing you'll be telling me is that two humanoid races with vastly different evolutionary conditions would happen on planets dozens of light yrars apart. Only big difference being ears, green blood and a different heart. Then you'll be telling me a Vulcanian and a human could not copulate and produce a child..... Not to mention that Captain Sulu at the intro to "Undiscovered Country" records that they have completed their years long deep space mission and are heading back on impulse. What, does he have a few hundred years to spare? Maybe he just wanted to travel at .99C long enough to stave off those crows feet and be younger than his family. Yeah Star Trek completely ignores Relativity.

@@STho205 _"Not to mention that Captain Sulu at the intro to "Undiscovered Country" records that they have completed their years long deep space mission and are heading back on impulse. What, does he have a few hundred years to spare?"_ This Romulan ship went from Romulis to Earth on Impulse, and it's just fine. The first time we see impulse mentioned (the second pilot episode, in fact) the Enterprise was on the edge of the galaxy, having recently lost Warp Drive power: the nearest Federation base was "years" in the distance at Impulse - not centuries. In TOS, impulse is clearly an FTL drive that just happens to be slower than Warp. Public opinion says impulse is sublight only... but public opinion isn't always right.

I believe in a later scene discussing the data they had on hand, they found that the weapon caused a forced implosion at the molecular level. It obviously was capable of overwhelming any molecular structure, whether energy shield or high density compounds. I think it acted on the target like a plasma version of a shaped charge.

@@Idazmi7. Edge of the Galaxy is above and below, as well as out. Starbases, not Earth was years away. However the writers and viewers were still mastering their crude ideas of our solar system in 2d on an orbital plane. Even astronomers were slow to look at orbits in our system, not on our orbital plane, missing obvious asteroids till the 70s and 80s. Warp Vs Impulse could be imagined from the introduction statements in Forbidden Planet (exceeding light then vastly surpassing it). However too many scripts have it as sublight to ignore. Eventually only Warp ignored relativity and Einstein's math for normal space. Codified by First Contact and Metamorphosis where Warp was developed in the 21st century. However in the first pilot Duryea mentions the time factor had been broken just recently in their century, and Pike orders Time Warp Factors on 1701. Roddenberry actually worked out the speed math in his series outline the first year and The Cage, but his freelance writers pretty much ignored it, and wrote for drama. Impulse was slow, and Warp was fast. That's all they cared. After all this is just Buck Rogers as at least 5 early stories are lifted right from the pages of those 1920s novellas.

How the hell could you tell a Vulcan from a Romulan without meeting them? Spock's pa was flexible.

Outside of the ridge thing they did in TNG (I think?), there is no telling. A Romulan can easily pretend to be Vulcan and I think in ENT there was infiltration because of it
