Phil, Thanks for showing us the pinch, strip, roll down marabou tail prep technique. It gives a much nicer tail than my strip-wad-everything-together approach! And, as a general comment, God has blessed you with some teaching/instructional skills.

What is the biggest size you ever tied for this fly? I tied one with size 6 daiichi 4640 and mega simi seal dubbin, that's big haha! Is E6000 dry like gel type super glue? May I use gel type super glue to replace E6000? Thanks!

For the most part I tie all of my balanced flies size #8 or smaller. Larger sizes just aren’t fun to cast. The E6000 is an adhesive that holds up well. You could use gel superglue as well. Clear Gorilla glue is also an excellent option. I now try to encapsulate the eyes once they are in place with UV resin or the clear Gorilla glue for maximum durability. Cheers, Phil

@@PhilRowleyFlyFishing Thanks for your detailed reply. I am going to cast my #6 balanced fly with 8WT saltwater rod for sea bass. I hope it works!

@@Cute_index That should work. I use a level leader system for my balanced flies when using indicators. This ensures the fly or flies sink straight down vertically below the indicator. The drawback of this system is that it is tough, not impossible, to cast heavy flies. You won't win any casting awards, but you will catch many fish! 😀 Cheers, Phil

Yes so do craft stores as well. Challenge is that most of it isn't of great quality and the dye lots can be inconsistent. Cheers, Phil

I really like your technique for getting the eyes in place. Thanks for sharing that. I've been experimenting with tying some boobie style baitfish patterns using these types of rounded eyes glued to the flat end of the boobie foam. Seems to work really well and eliminates to need to round the end of the foam.

Hi Phil. This is Tom Loe, the owner of Sierra Drifters Guide Service located in Mammoth Lakes, Ca. Myself, and veteran Drifters guide Phil Therrien are the originators of the "Punk Perch" pattern and several other variations in that profile. The "Crystal Vanderleech" (named after my insurance agent Stan Vanderburg), the Agent Orange, and the "Punk Perch light". Arizona Dubbing mixed a special color dubbing for me called Crowley Perch Fry for the first generations I sold commercially seventeen seasons past. I have recently adapted these patterns to make them parallel; or level. The Parallel Perch, & Level Leech are amongst the deadliest flies one can have during damsel/dragon fly nymph migrations, callibaetis emergences, & fisheries that have juevenille forage fish; or small baitfish. Still water nymphing while using this pattern (s) will get you excellent results on Crowley Lake, CA., Eagle Lake, CA., Pyramid Lake, NV., Crane Prairie Reservoir, OR., & Strawberry Reservoir, UT. The reason for this post is to inform your subscribers that the Punk Perch name falls under licensed, & trademarked intellectual property rights. I am the California based originator. I was a designer for Pacific Fly Group, and the "Punk Perch" as well as other nymph, & streamer patterns were cataloged with this manufacturer. Interested fly fishers can purchase the original patterns online at sierradrifters.com/fly-sales/. Thumbs up on your variation of the head, looks great. You do a fine job on your tying videos, bravo. I use a black tungsten bead for the head, as well as a signature red gill band for the standard and parallel version. Silver wire for ribbing. be the fly...tom

Hi Tom, thanks for taking the time to inform my viewers of the history of this fly and for your kind words regarding my videos. Crediting the originators of any fly is important to me. I have amended the description of the version I featured in this video to properly credit you and Phil. Hopefully, a few of them might drop by your site and pick up a few originals. Like you, I have become a huge fan of balanced flies since being introduced to them by their originator, Jerry McBride close to 10 years ago now. I never leave home without them. Thanks, Phil

I love the name and the pattern. I like the two tone look but those Cali perch must be aneimic, still an awesome baitfish "style" using dubbing in a loop, inner glow too. I'll try it with what I have. Great tutorials Phil, I learned a couple tying tips in this one, as always, and fishing tips too. Thanks and cheers 👍😎🍺

Hi Joe, glad you enjoyed the video. The perch they are imitating on lakes like Crowley are juveniles, so they are small, somewhat slender and translucent. Cheers, Phil

Philip Rowley Hi again Phil, I googled Crowley lake perch. Your fly is a perfect match. The adults look more like a rock bass or crappie. They're not a yellow perch as I thought, regional nominclature I guess for a separate specie. But the trout love them as you said. I saw one tying video, and translucency was stressed, but he picked out a ribbed ice dub noodle. I like your method much better. That crowley dubbing color was spot on. Thanks again Phil! 👍
