(March 2023)
This was my first big backcountry day touring 5.2 miles with 3104 ft of vertical. I was feeling a little fatigued on the up which made me think about my conditioning and endurance for future tours and things I’d like to do. I was touring with little to no sleep with Daniel snoring in the Hostel but I managed to push on. The tour up had a longer flat approach that eventually gets to a pretty sustained but manageable pitch until you get to the Baldface Knob Section which is very steep and can be tricky to get up if you decide, like we did, to keep your skis on. There were no clouds and great views from the knob and the summit of South Baldface which was definitely worth the extra hike for the views alone. The skiing was a from the Summit was weird with windblown snow and tight trees in certain areas but it acted as a good warmup for the steep skiing of the knob. Spring like conditions with warming soft but heavy snow also factored into the conditions. This was my first time skiing an alpine zone in New England which didn’t seem like anything I’ve skied on the East Coast. Baldface Knob was some awesome steep skiing which lead to glades that mellowed out in pitch. There were a lot of traverses between gladed zones that didn’t make it into the video but they were definitely there. The final traverse out would be very tough on a snowboard but was manageable on skis but still relatively flat with a few water bars or river crossings that could be tough on low snow years. All in all this was an amazing day in the backcountry. We met Dylan (snowboarder) and Mookie (dog) on the summit and shared some turns together until we went on our own in the glades. Thanks again to the Granite Backcountry Alliance for doing all they do and providing us with these awesome backcountry zones.
