TIP for Eldritch Blast: One of my favorite builds for end game is 2 Warlock/10 Wizard (Evocation). Take the appropriate Warlock Invocation that gives you Cha to Damage, level 10 Evocation Wizard will also add Intelligence to Evocation spells. So you'll have 3 rays of 1d10 + Intelligence + Charisma, and with items you can probably get one of your stats added again.

Yes, although that isn’t too hard. You can dump STR and split Dex and Con. Spoilers below: Alternatively you could dump CON and wear the end game armor from the House of Hope and get your COM boosted through that, bypassing any stat investment. You might want to respec lay game if that’s your goal, because it might be hard to play the whole game with low CON. If you are against respecs (like I have been on my playthroughs) you can still make it work with a low CON through careful strategy.

2 Warlock / 10 Sorc is also a very common build in BG3 called Sorlock. Can use EB for cantrip spam while still having access to more than 3 spells a day... and can still upcast spells to lvl 6. Both use Charisma for their casting stat and you also get Con proficiency when taking Sorc level 1. Usually how it goes in-game is you go Sorc for the first 5 levels to get 3rd level spells, then go 2 in Warlock for the EB buffing invocations, before going back to Sorc levels.

Good decision by Larian to change the name of' Chill Touch' which is neither a touch spell or a cold-based spell (it is actually a ranged necrotic spell). Beautifully detailed vid. I can always get something from CVGs videos, despite an absurd amount of time spent on the game. for example, the vid got me thinking why have I never used 'Minor Illusion' to distract the bear Volo is talking to in the grove to turn it around and remove its vision cone around Volo, so you get a little window of opportunity to get behind Volo and steal a nice ring from him. I'll also have to test its effect to steal the Idol of Silvanus. I have resolved to use Minor Illusion more, when I have the cantrip. I also want to start using this cantrip to cluster enemies in a group for an AOE spell - a good alternative for when you run out of void bulbs to use. There probably aren't many players who are not sleeping on SOMETHING that could give them an edge, so this is a recommended video for players whether they have 1 hr in the game or 1,000 hrs. I do love CVGs thoroughness in including a cantrips value both early and later in the game and even pointing out that using the Friends spell works a little differently in Tactician mode.

Friends is definitely S tier, even on Tactician. I think people really overstate the "dangers" of using it, because it's functionally a free Eagle's Splendor you can use for Advantage on /every/ Charisma check against an NPC, and the only downside is that you need to clear out before the spell wears off the target so they don't accuse you of a crime. It's the equivalent of having an on-demand Charm Person or Eagle's Splendor without using a spell slot, and is fantastic for your PC that might not always have someone (like Shadowheart) to toss an Eagle's Splendor on them. Used correctly, even on tactician, you will NEVER have NPCs go hostile from you using it. It's 2nd-circle power as a Cantrip and IMO is absolutely S tier. The single best out of combat cantrip.

Yeah, this is one thing that having played D&D before negatively affected my experience in BG3. My DMs are all too happy to create crazy consequences for charms, so I was hesitant to ever use them in the game, but, actually, they're just overpowered win buttons with no downsides in BG3. It's actually one of the areas that really disappoints me about the game. The interpersonal consequences of bad behavior in the game is either getting away with it scot-free or getting into deadly combat with no middle ground. I would definitely put Produce Flame above Light. If you use it purely as a light-creating spell then it's just as useful, since it doesn't take up a hand, doesn't require concentration, and lasts until long rest unless you dismiss it. While Light can be cast on objects in the environment rather than be carried, Produce Flame has the strength of adding in some of the usefulness of Fire Bolt, including being able to ignite things. In comparison to Fire Bolt it does only slightly less damage, can be used as an immediate attack with the same action cost or held as a reserve attack for later, and the only thing that makes Fire Bolt better as a utility is the fact that Produce Flame is a throw rather than a ranged shot.

Produce Flame and Light should swap. Produce Flame gives a larger radius of light than Light, so assuming you would be casting Light on yourself, Produce Flame is just a better version. Add that it can also be used for damage or setting things on fire and it has much more utility in general. The main function of the spell should be considered to be the light effect, not the damage. There are some drawbacks, pretty sure it will ignite some effects passively which could be dangerous (or beneficial, taking a bit of fire damage may be preferable to whatever the effect would be otherwise), and you can't use it on another party member or throw a lit item. But I think compared to Light, those drawbacks are outweighed by the benefits.

So mostly agree but I feel you missed a couple things. 1. Shillelagh can also be learned via feat, and that version is special because it will uses whatever your class's spell modifier is. Furthermore, it works with quarterstaffs, which count as 2 handed for GWM feat when used on their own. This is a *BIG* deal, when so much of this game hinges on dialogue checks. It allows Bards, Paladins, and Barbarians(!) to dump their STR/DEX for Charisma and be awesome at combat AND diplomacy. 2. Elemental Cantrips like firebolt CAN be improved further. There is the amulet of elemental augmentation AND Empowered Evocation trait for Evocation wizards. Though to be fair, EE also buffs Eldritch blast so...one could stack both warlock and evocation wizard buffs onto that one cantrip. The amulet though does not consider 'force' an element, so it does not help Eldritch blast.

In the Mausoleum in act 2 I used it to simply move the orb that's guarded in the room with the trader. It can also click buttons, throw bags (mushroom place) and throw potions in combat. Minor illusion literally breaks so many fights because you can just group enemies up using it and then throw fireball or wall of fire at them. In my opinion, Dancing Lights: I'd tier it higher only for the utility outside of combat. Definitely not worth much in combat, but it did help me see my surroundings better when exploring. Light definitely is a little better, but range wise it's nice to drop a Dancing Lights ahead of myself before stumbling into darkness. Mage Hand: lets you reach behind gates. Minor Illusion I'd rate A cos setting up positioning in my favour, especially for thieving, is too handy for me. Product Flame: it's like Light without duration. I like level 6 Battle Master Fighter with level 6 War Domain Cleric. If you feat into Druid spells to get Shillelagh and Entangle, it makes for super great combos. On your first turn cast Shillelagh and Entangle, you get them for 10 turns. Then on 2nd turn, use Combat Maneuver Trip Attack on enemies who are entangled, because they don't get to do any movement from entangled, they are stuck prone now. Now attack 2 more times to an enemy that is stuck prone, with Shillelagh damage added in. 3 Shillelagh attacks each turn, and if you do a trip attack, then they remain prone in the entanglement and you get advantage on those attacks.

You actually were incorrect in your description of what sacred flame does. It actually causes the message "saved" to appear above the targeted enemy's head and causes you to wonder why you even bothered.

Guidance can actually be pretty good if there's a dialogue check before a fight, like convincing Yurgir in the House of Hope, as it can be used to get a guaranteed Concentrated Blast, which can even be a bonus action if you went to the Creche earlier on

there were a few times i used mage hand for exploration but there was one time, which was unplanned i dont even remember why i cast it in the first place, in cazador fight it actually helped me so much when the fight started it didnt go into combat and i freely used it to shove astarion close to my party. i was so amused while pushing astarion over and over and no one wondering "huh how can he move by his own?? like??" it was so fun 😭😭

First of all, great video! There are quite a few ways to make cantrip focused builds pretty great, apart from the obvious eldrich blast ofc, by focusing on the plethora of cantrip boosting and hastening items and talents. Sadly the DEX based cantrips, like spells, are usually bottom tier since enemies who aren't damage sponges (aka non-tanks) tend to scale to nutty high DEX and more importantly, tend to have full evasion to damage if they succeeded a DEX saving throw. Which is why Chain lightning is much better on paper than in action And it doesn't help that all notable bosses have +10 to saving throws, making a failed save almost impossible, resulting in 0 damage with evasion (like Orin for example) Dancing lights seems utterly trash at first, then it seems even worse when you notice it is concentration... However, there is that 1d4 psychic dam ring and those boots that make you immune to prone IF you are concentrating on a spell, you can also use it to detonate that certain illithid power at full power Also bonus action based classes like thief don't mind using action on things like this, since they have one attack from main anyway, and with AK /certain items they get extra attack or to use these action cantrips as bonus actions Not only that, the fact that dancing lights can be cast at a range, makes it far better than light against shadows and other ranged targets that get ridiculous buffs if they are concealed. You could always bust out daylight, but using a cantrip instead on a char that doesn't have any con spells running anyway can be pretty good situationally, especially if combined with the afore mentioned stuff Blade ward is also great with that sorc and hybrids that specialize on cantrips and get attacks/bonus actions from casting it Eldrich blast is usually most damaging, but only 3d10+30-36 at max ish without crits. cold ray can be 2x (6d8 + 20)without crits with wet+twinned and +the cantrip items, so if there are two targets, cold ray can be more damaging even without dragon sorc Not to mention if the enemies are close to each other, shocking grasp can be even more devastating since it can be bloosted by lightning sorc, wet, tempest cleric and can be twinned ad well True strike is indeed one of the worst cantrips in the game, but it also has its uses. An offhand focused xbow/dual-wield rogue who doesn't get extra attack with main, can guarantee a backstab, which is limited to one use per turn anyway, with it

Dancing lights is probably trash outside overwriting other effects like cloud/smoke/fog type spells, you can also use it to manipulate pressure traps and gas vents.

Eh Minor Illusion is S Tier if we're being objective about it. I can split off enemies from groups to turn full-size encounters into much smaller, easier ones, OR even just pull enemies away one at a time to effectively stealth kill the entire encounter, with no resources lost.

When you factor in Agonizing Blast and Repelling Blast invocations (remember to turn the later on or off depending on the situation!), then Eldritch Blast becomes a tier on its own. And after that there is Potent Robe, but there is an argument that sorcerers can make solid use of it for any cantrip as well, so let's leave it there 🙄

I think ray of frost is defiantly S tier later in the game. 1. From late Act 1 to Early Act 2 there are a lot of items that synergize well. turning it into an AOE and buffing weapon damage for an off hand bonus attack. 2. with high DC the ice pool it makes constantly knocks enemies down (there are boots you can put on your mele to make them not fall on ice) 3. It causes a chill effect that will make a target weak to ice damage even if they were previously resistant to it.

I’d never pick dancing lights but the spell has its uses. Probably it’s best use is covering vent traps. Given there’s an item that gives this cantrip, Drow, and half Drow get it for free, I’d never pick it.

Blade ward is way better than this. Basically on dead turns (when you can't reach an enemy and dashing is bad) or the start of combat it gives safety. Eldritch Knights at lvl 7 can trade one of their attacks for Blade Ward which can also be good. Lastly use it before starting a conversation with a boss and you have blade ward for 1 turn in the fight, specially useful for low innitiative characters.

Before watching, this would be my list: S - Eldritch Blast, Guidance A - Fire Bolt, Light, Mage Hand, Minor Illusion, Ray of Frost B - Blade Ward, Bone Chill, Friends, Produce Flame, Shocking Grasp, Vicious Mockery C - Dancing Lights, Poison Spray, Resistance, Shillelagh, Thaumaturgy, Thorn Whip D - Acid Splash, Sacred Flame, True Strike

Mage hand being so low surprised me. Assuming enemies ignore it (they almost always do) it is essentially 10 turns of lossless throwing. Not only is this similar damage output to other cantrips if you're throwing smokepowder bombs for example it is more versatile in that it can buff or heal your allies when needed, all without costing you an action. Costing an action to summon isn't an issue because most of the time you know when a combat encounter is going to occur, and can pre-cast it. The only real downside it has is being limited to one use per short rest. Still S tier for sure IMO.

I'd rate Poison Spray as solidly F tier, not even D. Poison is the most commonly-resisted damage type, the range is awful, it isn't a cone anymore so no AoE, and it's a difficult save. Even if you have every possible boosting item, the fact there isn't a Poison-based sorc means you can't really maximize it the way you could all the other damage cantrips. I can't ever imagine a scenario I'd want to use it in combat except some extremely rare "vulnerable to poison" enemy, but then I'd have to get into melee with them.

This doesn't really make it better but I got a lot of use out of True Strike by using it to set up my concentration and then expending it right away on bonus action concentrated blast. Basically Makes that skill a cantrip as long as you don't need you bonus action for something else that turn.

Id also put acid splash in A. Having a free small aoe is fairly nice. Couple that with spell gear that increases cantrip damage based on your modifiers (amulet of elemental infusion, potent robe, birthright hat, even more if youre a copper/black dragon sorcerer) its a no brainer if you have a way to gather enemies together or if you can funnel them without a need for a spell slot.

i think minor illusion deserves an A tier, while its not useful in combat its a solid secondary choice because you can start combat with all the enemies bundled up so gale or yourself can mow them down with fireball or that one level 4 ice spell. But i agree its effectiveness is ended when combat begins

Produces Flame should be S-Tier. It's a strict upgrade over Light. It gives you light and a fire attack, useful both in and out of combat. You can literally cast it right after a Long Rest and have it in your pocket for whenever you need it.

Blade Ward is super underrated cantrip. You take half hit to physical damage, which is most enemies in the game. Does it take action and last only two turns? Yes. But it's for tanks. If she's surrounded by 5 enemies, her main role is to survive. The rest of the group can then do damage unmolested. And since it's a cantrip, you can use it unlimitedly! It saved me many times...

i think having firebolt in s and not ray of frost doesnt really make sense as ray of frost scales so much better with the equipment in the game and benefits from being able to give vulnerability at will which you cant do for firebolt. i tend to find cold is less resisted than fire damage too

I find shocking grasp not very useful because it has a very short range. So if I use it on my fighter or barbarian I'd rather just attack, and with mage or any ranged I'd rather have ray or frost or fireball and just keep my distance.

i would use true strike from out of combat to set up a fight, like with balthazar, and then lay into him for two turns and use the illithid concentrated bast if anyone else was concentrating (balthazar cloud kill etc) with the bonus action illithid stuff, so it was nice to just have on tap to remove someones concentration. sucked later as the bonus from arcane affinity off that one item for casting cantrips started being outweighed. Vicious mockery similar, but justuse to finish someone off. The subsequent casts on lightning strike countas cantrips for the same purpose tho, so... adding 10 dmg per round from +5cha isnt always the best use of resources tho
