Spores Druid is quite odd on its own, granting bonuses to melee damage and slight survivability, summoning creatures to fight enemies, and granting a bit of an AoE control ability at level 10. They feel more like a Jack of All Trades than anything else, with their Circle spells being the most noteworthy part of their kit. Oddly enough, they function well as a dip for a Monk. The additional Necrotic damage works with Unarmed Strikes, and any additional HP is helpful for Monks.

Thanks for these videos, they really help visualize the stuff you get and learn a bit of what Larian changed from PHB. Just a couple questions, english is not my first language so I failed to get the information, does the spores zombies you raise scale or not scale with ur lvl? Because having a mere 8 hp at lvl 6 is already kinda bad but if it doesn’t scale… well… anyways, also, can these stack with the raise dead spell? So if u have 4 zombies from spores can u still summon more from raise dead? Also is it always 4 charges or is it based on wisdom modifier like in the PHB? Thanks in advance 🙏🏻

I'd argue that, if you want to play Circle of Spore Druid to lore roleplay-wise. You wouldn't take Speak with Animals. As they are about death and decay of life. Not conversing with and protecting it. They're essentially the anti-Druid subclass. Which gives you a lore-friendly cop-out to not using the spell as a Druid, imo. lol

An additional comment that is worth noting is that adding Monk as 1 level really makes the Spore Druid shine as a forward character as druids have an infamously low AC value. It's pretty easy to get at least 16 for both Dex and Wis putting your base AC at 16 for Level 1. Early Bracers of Defense put you at AC 18; and then increasing your Wisdom at Druid 4 and 8 get you up to AC 20 which is equivalent to Plate Armor with a Shield. Except now, every short rest, you get to add 4*Druid Level HP twice to your character, putting your effective HP on par with the party Barbarian. Unfortunately, one of the big draws to the multiclass is not currently working right now which I hope they fix. Monk Unarmed Strikes and Flurry of Blows *should* apply Symbiotic Entity damage but currently do not. Finally, I think you might have mixed up on the Necrotic Spores reaction explanation. Essentially you are giving up your Reaction for making Opportunity Attacks (or other nonsense your character might have) to try to squeeze out extra damage. You'll get the Reaction back at the Start of your next turn. I like using it when there's a low health enemy that needs that little push to get knocked; or if I'm near melee fighters that will not try to run from me. If you're fighting archers and you close the gap with them, you'll want to threaten the Attack of Opportunity because having 1d8 (Shillelagh) + WIS + 1d6 (Symbiotic) will always outpace the Spore damage. In summary; you get to be a caster in the thick of the fight. You get to pad your HP with wild shape charges but still maintain access to your spells; and that additional HP is protected by a reasonable AC score which, again, druid's are infamous for lacking. You get the flexibility of "Am I going to run in and pressure enemy backline" or "Am I going to hang back and sling spells to debuff the big evil guy" by situation and resources available. Definitely a build I'm having a lot of fun with so far.

Yeah, I used it tonight for my first character and that unfortunately makes it a smidge awkward. Especially because we need to get up close to benefit from the extra weapon damage. Maybe at higher levels it's worth it cuz you get extra temp HP, but at lvl3... I'd rather just wildshape.

@@MrStudMan2Tbh I kinda feel the extra damage is a bit of a trap? Its a 1D6 bonus that doesnt scale. It may be a nice bonus when multiclassing but unless you go out of your way its likley that bone chill will out damage it after lvl 5 or so. You still wanna be closer than most spell casters to get Halo of Spores off, so Spore Druid is more of a Battle mage than most spellcasters but I dont think you want to over rely on that bonus weapon damage.

Bonus strat: if you start as a Drow, you get Hand Crossbow Proficiency. That lets you deal 4d6 damage per turn at a range of 15m at level 2, not including Coatings. You also get proficiency with Rapiers and Shortswords, which have good options for you down the line If you find yourself in melee, a Torch with Shillelagh will also deal a lot of damage. It's better to not take Shillelagh, though, as it doesn't remain relevant to Circle of Spore's gameplan. Problem is, Drow do not have any inherent resistances, which are how you keep Symbiotic Entity active.

So I dont fully get why so many focus on the 1D6 bonus damage you get from Symbiotic Entity. Atleast when we are talking pure builds and not multiclassing. Am I missing something cause to my knowledge it doesnt scale so after lvl 5 or so cantrips will probably do more. It gives some extra damage if you need to bonk with Shillelagh but thats mostly it. Anywho I find this subclass interesting. Most classes are pretty specifically long range or Melee but the Spore Druid seems to be.... Mid range I guess. Symbiotic Entity makes you able to take hits but you dont want to be an outright tank and Halo of Spores has a fairly short range but it Isnt Melee. Druids also have shield and medium armour proficency so their AC can get alright. I really think that beyond the necromancer aspect people who want something more akin to a Battle mage should look this up.

Wouldn't work. As their core subclass functions around an ability that only works for so long as you have temporary hit points. Someone(s) are going to need to be the front line and taking the most hits. That Druid(s) wouldn't be able to utilize their class features beyond one or maybe two turns per use of Symbiotic Entity.

A friendly critique on all of your videos. Watch out for misrepresenting the damage numbers. You have a tendency to not account for multiple dice rolls increasing minimum damage. So, something that has multiple damage rolls for an attack or ability. You tend to combine them to state the maximum base damage. But then still stating one as the lowest base damage. When that's not the case. As well as not mentioning ability modifiers (if any) for to-hit and damage rolls on abilities. Especially when Wild Shape changes your stats and what modifiers are applied to attacks/abilities. Keep up the videos, mate.

Excited to play BG3 and was hoping to use a build I have from dnd but having trouble getting my questioned answered: I see the text for fungal entity says you deal the extra damage and you show it on the weapon but because of the wording I’m wondering if it applies to your cantrips? In the TTRPG dnd5e (symbiotic entity)it is worded specifically as “your melee weapon attacks deal an extra 1d6 poison damage to any target you hit” clearly they changed the damage type and die used but wondering if it applies to cantrips because would open a whole new play style if it did. If you know or have tested please let me know. Thanks and good video.

I think you're confusing Halo of Spores with Symbiotic Entity here, mate. And the key to keeping Symbiotic Spores up is two-fold. First, don't be in melee range. One of the most effective means of playing this subclass that I've found. Is to roll as a Drow. They gain proficiency in hand crossbows. Not only does this keep you out of melee range but also within range of Halo of Spores ability. You can dual wield hand crossbows and double-down on the Symbiotic Entity bonus damage on attacks. As well as having a weapon ability to dash and still shoot. Which helps you stay out of reach in combat. Second, use one of your multiple AoE's that help you with zone control and impairing your enemy. Grasping Vine with just about any of your AoE ground effects is great. The enemy has to use Disengage to avoid suffering an opportunity attack from the vine. Which means moving in an AoE that slows/snares/prones/damages them. And when they do get out, the Vine sucks them back in. Or grabs another person if they end up disabled by the AoE spell. Your party then deals with other targets and/or attacks them at range. The name of the game with maintaining Symbiotic Entity is crowd control. If you run a Bard or Illusion Wizard or just bring some potions/scrolls with illusion spells. You can further increase crowd control as well as get some debuffs or buffs to help mitigate damage. Something not mentioned in this video as well. The temporary hit points granted by Symbiotic Spores scales up with class level in Druid. Then there's the fact that you'll be getting more charges of Wild Shape. Allowing you to reapply the effect as needed. As you're not likely to be using those charges on Wild Shape. Outside of maybe turning into a Raven to fly away to safety. Or Badger for burrowing and terrain shenanigans. Or spider to abuse or maneuver around web effects.
