As someone who has a switch I honestly don't see that much of a problem since the switch itself has problems with games that are MADE for it and for me it is impressive that the Steam Deck can run an high detail game like Baldur's Gate.

As a person who first played warcraft in 4K on a 30Hz screen, and later BG3 on a great system, people have become incredibly snobby, like they have to justify themselves spending £1K+ on a video card. For a whole raft of games, 20-30fps is incredibly fine, and going faster gives no more joy.

Dumb question can you crank up the settings if you apply a 25fps lock. I wonder how bad nput latency would be on oled because 50hz/25fps sounds okay. Would frame generation be less more input latency then a 25fps lock.

Probably can crank up shadows and effects a bit, draw distance HAS to stay on low, affects performance a lot in the city. With a 25 FPS cap it would be more stable, but in the city it would still drop into the low 20s

While I agree it shouldn’t be verified, honestly the game is slow enough (for me at least) to not become a headache. It’s turn based so there’s really not a lot of need for quick movements. I’ve had 50+ hours on steam deck, capped at 28, and have had a blast with it.

Feels like Baldur's Gate III would get some decent headroom at at 50Hz (25fps) and still look okay. We have to keep in mind that 50Hz is something Europeans were used to up to the PS2-era. And since Baldur's gate is a slow paced game with dialogue, slow panning camera, and tactical gameplay. I wouldn't mind playing like that, even if I am of a completely different opinion when the game is fast paced, or require precision (which BGIII does not). the slow camera makes 25fps look much smoother than it would in other games, and I'd much rather prefer 25fps over stutters and erratic frame pacing. Also, with a 25fps lock your eyes will adjust over time, and the game would gain quite a decent amount of battery life in the less demanding scenes compared to the big city. Larian really needs to figure out a way to inactivate gameplay logic when it is not required. I'm a game developer myself and that's really the only optimizations I need to do. Even if I have poorly written code (believe me, I have some pretty terrible code in my project). However, as long as it doesn't run ALL THE TIME, it's basically a non-issue on modern hardware. You just need to have an effective state-engine that keeps track of "what subsystem needs to run", "where"/"when" and at "what frequency". Not all logic need to be connected to a per-tick- or per-frame- basis. much of my code just triggers once when needed, or at lower precision, like at 1/2 or 1/4 the framerate. Heck certain logic triggers once every few seconds even.

Valve designed it to run AAA games though, there's a statement on their website that says the Deck APU "delivers more than enough performance to run the latest AAA games in a very efficient power envelope." those are their words, not mine. Now, we tech enthusiasts know the machine's limits but when the company makes a statement like that, the average consumer will just blindly follow it and call every game that runs below 30fps on the Deck unoptimized.
