If interested, there is a talk on yt of swen where he talks about their n+1 and even +2 design (or smth).Which was already used in d:os I think and surely d:os2. It's basically 'try to think of everything a player could think of and account for it,make the engine and systems theirselves to accomodte for it. And then add one or two ways extra as kind of failsaves for story progressing quests (or all main quests, don't remember it was a while ago :,) ". Obvi bg3 is a different ruleset since it's dnd licensed but part of the amazingness of the choices is the result of swen and his team just being gamers, loving making games that they themselves would want to play. And for example swen said that he didn't watch metrics about what areas were visited most or not ,or quests seen or not and that in combo with the great system based engine is the real magic (obvi story,va,graphics,... all as well). But i truly think that was how they were to accomplish this masterpiece, because the world is filled with quality content and banana diaglogue/consequence trees behind the scenes. It's also what is imho xD causing BG3 induced sleep depravation for many and/or replayability for others.

I also had to stop save acumming and accept that some things cannot change. I still save often before what I assume are pivotal moments. This game does not allow you to persuade through every single combat encounter... no matter what you do you have to kill the avatar of myrkul... probably you finished the game just once. Chaotic good is the best type of character for first playthrough because it allows you to expirence the most of content that game can offer and it masks all illusions of choice that are obvious when you finish the game as an evil character (especially in act 2). Choosing evil character is just choosing less content because many important characters dies and their questlines are blocked. There is no separated evil path and evil character has to beat the same bosses and visit the same locations as a good character. On top of that no ending is blocked depending on your decisions and you still can choose to be hero at the end even if you was extremely evil through the whole game.

To me, Baldurs Gate 3 is the culmination of a ton of great RPG games made over the last 30 years. Be it old masterpieces like "Planetside: Torment" or "Arcanum: Of Clockworks and Magic", more Action based RPGs like Dragon Age or even cult-classics like Fallout New Vegas, Larian took all the lessons learned by those games and more and put it into Baldur's Gate 3. I HOPE that it raises the standard for RPGs, because glorified loot-shooters like Starfield don't even deserve the title "RPG". Larian treats you like a grown-up an respect your intelligence, and this, created one of the most immersive RPGs of all times. And I already know when Divinity: Original Sin 3 or Baldur's Gate 4 come out 5-10 years from now, they will be even better.

I would go a couple steps forward and complain about the lack of an ability to make turn based mode automatically trigger on trap detection (is a pain)(from a v sad necromancer who has been fucked over by "Careful a tra- BOOM" 5 too many times), as well as the issues I have with being unable to pass off ability checks to other characters in your party (My face warlock should not have to stand there trying to figure out what this magical artefact is with my +3 to arcana while Gale with a +9 is twiddling his thumbs behind me, you just know he's ready to infodump about the fortnight he spent hyperfixating and researching this exact type of blue pebble.) I just feel like it would help give the idea that dnd is a party game, because at the moment it's like, "Here is the hero of the forgotten realms... and their 3 lackeys" if you could press a button and wave your hand to the big stone door as you side step to let Karlach step forward and crack her knucles with a smile so she can roll her athletics, or have shadowheart roll her religion and have the camera pan over to her and tell you what this idol to whomever means, or have astarion step forward and lockpick something and then bow a bit in that way you never know if he's being sarcastic or actually flirty to let you through? it would bolster the feeling that you are a team so much more Obviously, there are times when this wouldn't make sense, but in those times, it does, it is sorely missed. As it stands now they are entirely static behind you unless they have preprogrammed interjections that are important to their story, or they will talk in an aside that somehow the person right in front of us doesn't react to. I feel like I'm walking around with ghosts that only appear in combat (or to get hurt by traps grrr) and when someone does address them in convo it's like "wait you can see them too!?" Still a fucking amazing game and the only game that can consistently hold my attention in single player without even background noise on my second monitor (although act 3 can get a bit overwhelming with all the things that happen at once so i had to take a break for a while)

The thing about this game "raising the standards" of the industry overall, is that if most AAA studios attempt to make similar games of such quality, those attempts will likely come at the expense of the workers who create them. I agree with your assessment: BG3 is one of if not THE best games I've ever played. If I could exchange its existence to improve the working conditions of the people who made it, I would instantly. Jim Sterling has made a few videos recently that elucidate this point, and I'd recommend checking them out.

17:34 I hate the fact you used Xalaviers tweets in there. The debate you are talking about never really existed. This was about length and expectations of games, not the quality itself. Baldurs Gate is an Incredible game, but it was also a suicide mission on part of Larian, it took so many resources that if it was a failure, the studio might have gone bankrupt. There is no way to know whether a game will be successful, you just gotta pray. His argument was to keep games high quality, but shorter and less expensive. Focus on innovation and cool ideas, not on 500 hour slogs with hundreds of souless places to explore.

i love how you talk about DOSII but that game itself was largely in part designed to be a sort of resume/job-application to WOTC to let Larian make BGIII. that's why they are so similar: DOSII is a proof of concept.

its amazing you even get to know characters like you know them irl and you can easily guess what they will approve or not. i don't think any other gaming experince can even come close to this level.

Never had any experience with DnD. The only turn based games I've played is Final Fantasy and pokemon gold. So I was a little skeptic if this game would be a little overwhelming. But holy sweet jesus am I glad I gave this a try!!!! Almost 50hrs in and about to finish act1 and cannot believe how good this game is!!!! I havent been this captivated by a game since my childhood.

It's needs to lower the difficulty of "easy mode" or implement "very easy" to make the game more accessible. Before D&D fanboys start invalidating this, not everyone is a fan of it's combat system but just want to experience the rich dynamic world and amazing story in this game. BG3 has one of the best, if not the best RPG experience. Casuals and non-D&D fans can git good in this game, but not everyone can afford to go through a very steep learning curve before they can start enjoying this game. It takes hours to learn this game and some even said they only know the surface after 20hrs+. You need alot of time and mental dedication which lots of people with a life do not have.

I don't see this happening, just because the mechanics are the mechanics! And if that's the difficult part, an easier mode isn't going to solve that, because an easier mode is still going to use the same mechanic settings. (I do empathize, I got the game in early access and quit at the goblin village because I party wiped so many times. Decided not to play again until difficulty settings were introduced) I think they could make things a little clearer in the beginning with an optional tutorial intro into things like stealthing. So much combat can be avoided by playing a class like Bard (with high charisma) or by stealthing around and avoiding sightlines. Likewise, using turn-based mode when you are sneaking and doing illegal things to ensure you aren't caught in the act. Things players who aren't familiar with the system might not think to do, and ways to not have to brute force your way through every situation by fighting.

If you want a more easy mode type thing, I suggest changing shadowhearts class to a life domain cleric and your main character being a paladin 😂

I have finished my 1st playthrough after 150 hours this weekend and promptly started with my 2nd one - the dark urge. And boy it's so different, I love it! (Also recommend trying as a drow - everyone talks about your race, it's so fascinating!). Cannot imagine ever loving a game more than bg3 (but I hope I will be proven wrong :D)

My 2 cents on gaming in general is that gaming is as much of an art as it is a feat of engineering, rarely do things mix such that 2 practically opposing fields require such intricate cohesion to make a final result.

Agreed 100%. I had also a pleasure of playing BG1 and BG2 soon after its release, so I can 100% say that BG3 is a 100% successor of old games. Sadly, the level that BG1 and BG2 achieved was NEVER repeated, until BG3. BG3 will surely inspire many new games, but there is a high chance, but none of them will be as good. Still, we got enjoyable games like Icewind Dale or Neverwinter Night, but... BG is just on another level across the board.

I had to pinch myself when i realised your channel is so small. The quality of the video is on par with what I see from content creators with over a million times your subs. I've only (only... lol) gotten to play about 80 hours of this game so far, but the sheer breadth of this game has astonished me. There is SO MUCH to do, and so many different ways to do each thing, that I ended up making a completely different character to play through Act 1 again before I'd even finished it. This is the first game that has sucked me in and made me realize that I'd just spent an entire day playing without even noting the passage of time since World of Warcraft back in 2007. Truly a masterpiece.
