The side quests really are something else in this game. They're not just out in a void, they tie into other quests in interesting ways. Save a guy from a windmill in act 1>find out the guy belongs to one half of a gnomish blood-fued>other half of the blood-fued is enslaved in the steel foundry, which gives you another reason to resolve Gortash's steel watch quest. Some dipshit wizard is hiring mercenaries to look for a powerful artifact in act 1>artifact is an character with ties to Shadowheart and Ketheric in act 2>meet dipshit wizard in act 3, whose tower ties into Gale and Aylin and Rolan's quests. It's all so tangled and busy in ways that other RPG's just aren't. If you're looking for an RPG that has as much, if not more reactivity than BG3, I'd recommend Roadwarden. If you're looking for a game that rewards player curiosity, Outer Wilds by Mobius Digital is head and shoulders the best I've ever played. Neither of these games have voice acting though, so be prepared to read a fair bit

Wow, amazing for a first video! Just wanna point out when rating Astarion's character - he doesnt have much content until Act 3 *unless* you have him in your party. There's a lot to easily miss with him (necromancy book, gur hunter, the drow in Moonrise Towers, meeting Raphael and asking about his scars...) All those things are easily missed if astarions not in the party, which is a shame, but also kind of a cool thing to discover extra bits of lore depending on who is in party

an important thing to specifically laezel and shadowheart seeming to do a 180. shadowheart throughout the game is very much defying shar in different ways due to the relationship that she builds with the main character and the nail in the coffin is dame aylin saying the stuff about the wolves. shadowheart knows shars teachings and your relationship with her alone defies a massive part of the dogma. the fact she shared secrets, that shes built this very intimate bond with you, and even showing you to why shes with shar. all the little things add up and thats what let to the flip of imma not kill the nightsong. lae’zel is a warrior through and through. she cares for her people and culture and she also was a slave to the dogma spread by vlakkith. she is experiencing the most traumatizing moment in her life actively as we go throughout the game, her world is being flipped upside down by the tadpoles alone. then comes to her queen not being the goddess she claims to be but a parasite who feeds off her strongest warriors to ascend. lae’zel is experiencing all of this in a matter of weeks. so when she finally sees the truth fully to herself that orpheus is alive she knows completely that all she was taught were lies. to that i dont see her pledging to orpheus but to the freedom of her people and orpheus is the symbol for githyanki freedom. its the very small things that add up for those two a lot that lead to their decisions. thank you for coming to my ted talk

It's interesting to see your perspective as a newcomer to the series and to D&D in general. You see, the things that you love about this game - the scale, the attention to detail, the freedom of choice - is exactly what old timers like me also love about it. We see it as a return to form after years and years of Skyrim-like RPGs, which dumb things down in order to appeal to as many people as possible. But wouldn't you know it, Larian has proved that old school RPGs (sometimes called classic RPGs) can also appeal to the masses if you do them well enough. Also, it does probably help that after all this time, this sort of game once again feels fresh and innovative, which honestly it really actually is even for old timers. It manages to stay both classic and fresh by taking an old formula and putting a modern spin on it. I share your hope that BG3 will pave the way for a classic RPG renaissance.

They nailed it with the perfect blend of inviting new players and bringing the old guard back in without bastardizing the foundation. You can tell this was made by gamers, for gamers. It goes to show what a studio can do when it has motivations beyond just how do we extract as much money as possible from our game. Bethesda is going down the complete opposite path, while making exponentially more money than Larian, but hopefully Larian starts to get that same type of funding going forward

This was really fun to watch! It sounds like you missed a lot of Act 1 and 2 interactions with Astarion that expand on his storyline, like running into a monster hunter who is hunting him in act 1 and him making a deal with Rafael in act 2. I romanced Shadowheart on my first playthrough and Astarion on my second. It opened up even more more information and allows you to see a more sincere side of Astarion as he grows to trust you and drop the mask he wears to protect himself. That is the awesome thing about this game. I admit I missed a lot on my first play-through and still find things for the first time, even though I have over 600 hours and three and a half play-throughs. After my first play-through, I knew BG3 was going to be my new Skyrim which I still go back and replay occasionally. Thanks for posting this! Also, I would love to see your tier list once you have played through again to see if anything changes.

Great video, well done. Commenting a few days in. Astarion has some act one & two content you missed, and even more if romanced. Things to look for if you play again. Shadowheart can express her doubts about Shar before the gauntlet, but it requires triggering the right dialogues at the right times. Fun if you get those comments by accident, annoying if you’re looking for them. I also wanted to leave Karlach with Hope. And the Steel Watch are built with a new version of the same heart; there’s even dialogue hinting about saving her that way. I feel like all of that was dropped for time. Hope you enjoy the after party. It helps.

Nice overview - I love, how that game brings new player getting interested in the DnD lore Some thoughts from me about what you said: As a long time DnD player and fan of the Baldurs Gate series, I love BG3. I don't really get the comment about objectifying women in regards to Dame Aylin though. She is a pretty strong woman and a capable ally later in the game and helps Shadowheart on her journey - and as a lesbian, I was glad to have her have a girlfriend. You should definitively play with Jaheira alive (just tell her to join you in Moonrise and you have control over her character) she is one of the most iconic characters in the series - and if she is alive, leads you to another iconic character from teh series. About mindflayers: Balduran stopped being Balduran, when he became a mindflayer. They have the memories of their host, but that's it. Omeluum is different, because he has soem kind of mindflayer birth defect, that made him more independant. So the Emperor was born out of Balduran, but isn't him anymore. And you get to know thorughout the story, that he values his own life over everything else (if you did the Ansur quest) and Orpheus would have killed him, when freed without a doubt. So his reaction in the end makes kind of sense. I personally loved the Shadowlands, as a horror fan, I loved the lovecraftian vibes, they were giving. About Karlach: I always envisioned her and Wyll living with Hope in the HoH between their battles. And you get a bit more closure with her at the reuniting party (with Astarion , Lae'zel and the otehr characters too). Her after-Gortash moment is the best companion acting in the game for me - the actress did that so well. It really felt like a genuine panic attack About Astarion: He has two stories in act 2 - with Raphael and with a drow in Moonrise Tower, where he will change a lot depending on how you handle that. About Lae'zel: She is the youngest of the group, so her being easily swayed to another cause, makes sense. I agree about Halsin - he is boring and creepy in act 3. We could have had a halfling werewolf bard as a companion. You can get Minthara on a good playthrough by knocking her out instead of killing her. SHe will be a prisoner at Moonrise Tower and you can free her. SHe is still pretty evil, but at times hilarious. I agree with you about the replayability and player freedom of doing things. It is like a very good DnD group - you have your quirky band of characters and a lot of often unique ways to handle things. Oh and if you play again - have SHadowheart and Wyll in your group, they have a fun dialogue about their ... well ...favourite literature, lets call it that (they are talking about smut books ).

I appreciate all the info! The objectifying women thing was more of a joke just because they kept calling the Nightsong an object so I was confused when it was a person. As for the Karlach scene I absolutely loved it as well, I'm not a super emotional person but I genuinely felt terrible for her in that situation, and Samantha Beart was legitimately perfect for the role. As for all the other info I feel like you're teaching me more about these things than the game did so thank you so much!

@@NokayYT You're welcome. And thanks for clearing up the Nightsong thing. Yes, it was confusing, but such a good surprise. I cried in that Karlach scene, having problems with anxiety myself, that was so well acted and done. As for the lore info - I play DnD for a long time now and still learn stuff every day about lore. I didn't know about the goddess Loviatar until I met Abdirak in the game (I knew about the goddess of the same name in North mythology, but not the Faerun goddess). We never played that much with gods in our games, so that never came up.

For a while I agreed with you on Balduran’s random turn if you choose to free Orpheus. But after doing different playthroughs you sort of notice that Balduran(in the game) only cares about self preservation. Every action he takes since becoming a mindflayer has been about making sure he is always on top. I mean he killed his best friend and doesn’t seem to feel bad about it. The turn could’ve been handled better for sure but I feel like it makes sense if you really read in between the lines of what he tells you
@trentthurow5696

There are perception checks in scenes with him that hint he doesn’t actually care about you. Specifically if you don’t romance him when you get to Elfsong and you succeed a check your character notices how easily he moves on from you.

On top of all that there are multiple books and people in the game that tell you that mindflayers are not the humanoid they were before they went through ceremorphosis. They lose their soul, and their nature is to treat people around them like puppets Also if you consistently choose to not trust him, he will tell it to you straight: that he thinks of you as his thrall, no more than a puppet to allow him to be free. The emperor never really cared about you, just himself

Some of your criticism about how seemingly simple it was to kill the 3 baddies is likely because you aren't into D&D in a general sense. I say that because in D&D no matter how intricate the story of a bad guy, they are all ultimately designed for you the player to be able to deal with and defeat within a timely manner. The board game itself already takes a lot of time because there is so much backstory explaining by the DM and then switching between each player takes even more time, the last thing they need is a bad guy who can't be killed in 1 battle lol. So taking inspiration from the board game and turning it into a video game this is what you'll get. Bad guys who no matter how awesome they seem, can be killed in 1 round by you, just like in the board game.

i mean i would agree if the game didn't literally did just what you talked about with Kethric. I think he was executed alot better than Orin and Gortash especially. He has 1 battle with him atop Moonrise,and a 2-phase battle inside the colony,and i think he feels great as the final boss of act 2. Orin i feel like is less climactic but still cool since you kinda work your way to killing her through act 3. I think the only one who fumbles as a boss is Gortash who just kinda stands atop Wyrm's rock almost alone after you destroy the steel watch. Like,his battle barerly felt like a boss encounter with how little of interest he provided as a fight. Like ok sure the grenades are kinda fun but meh. Anyways,i think that they showed that they could make a few battles with the bosses they just kinda didn't with Gortash for some reason.

@@modarnwarfare2rull To me, this is what I find the most realistic (as realistic as fantasy can be). The idea that bosses need to be like Elden Ring having all these phases is crazy, in real life it doesn't matter if a grizzly bear has an epic reputation of killing 100 humans in it's lifetime, super infamous and the locals are all in fear of it... yet a single 5.56 bullet and a well timed shot out of an AR15 can still 1 shot said grizzly bear regardless of it's reputation in the streets. That is realistic, just because I become an infamous sorcerer that strikes fear into the hearts of men shouldn't mean I can't still be killed by a lucky arrow with no enchantments on it if I'm caught off guard while taking a crap on the toilet or something..

Because in BG2 there’s a fetch quest where you have to help the ghost of a murdered child find rest by returning his damn teddy. 2) Rope. In BG2 and in Throne of Bhaal, there are two different moments where you have to have a length of rope on hand. Silly me; I thought I might need rope. Nope. Just like I didn’t need ink, quills, tongs, pots, pans, bottles, plates, etc. etc. etc.

Great video! Some extra comments from my perspective: Astarion's storyline was so powerful and I cried just as if I were watching a movie. Also here had an evil alignment, so what do you expect with his approval, haha! He does care about kids and animals to an extent, and here has reasons for being the way he is, just like every character, which is so well done. I cried when Lae said goodbye. Karlach's story is super emotional too. None of the companions gets a straight up happy ending, even when you make the "good" choices, because life is complicated, and we all have hurt and trauma, but we can find hope, friendship and love. About Halsin: he's also a late addition, so don't judge his lack of story or dialogue. He of course has more if you romance him, but beyond that he's such a breath of fresh air because he's by far the most emotionally mature of the bunch 😂 He's really kind, patient and feels like a safe space in the storm. Particularly when I was stressed in act 3 with all the difficult fights and decisions, to just go talk to him was such a relief. He's also my favorite romance wise, even if he has less content (which makes sense since it only takes place in act 3), and also because it introduces polyamory to the game. They've added some lines and animation for him since my last playthrough, so I'm glad. And the epilogue party was great to have closure (except I couldn't hug Wyll, and he was the only one!). No matter how I felt about them at the beginning, they were all my friends by the end, and character development as well as the spectrum of choices you have, really makes BG3 the best game ever for me.

I assume other's have already said this but I thought I'd leave the comment anyway. Regarding Shadowheart and her story, you mention how she flips her faith for seemingly no reason. There is a reason but it could be conveyed a bit better. The reason she is so easy to flip her faith is because of you, the player character. What Shadowheart decides to do in the important moments during Act 2 and Act 3 is based on on her approval of the player. If you have high approval she will pick the "good" options but if you don't, then she will do the bad options instead. This is even kinda conveyed in your dialogue with her when she constantly reminds you that she has never had someone like you and at moments she's unsure of her faith. Before she only had Shar and with her memories being suppressed, she had no alternative. Everyone she knew was always, a Stranger, Someone who hated her faith or a fellow cult member. Then you come along, accept her for what she is and slowly over time your non-Shar worshiping ways seep into her beliefs and actions. I 100% agree it could still be conveyed better in the game, but there was an attempt, even how subtle it was. Shadowheart is imo the best character and because of these decisions I felt deserved a few playthroughs, converting her to Selune or helping keep her shrouded in the path of Shar. It can be heart breaking seeing the outcomes knowing what the other path could've been.

Just adding to the Karlach point, I don't think you could keep her in the House of Hope. The moment Rapheal dies in Hell, he becomes a lemur. That means the property will likely get taken by someone else more powerful, despite hope. There are some mighty powerful individuals in the hells like Asmodeus (who probably wouldn't get involved) and Zariel that could absolutely destroy/reclaim Hope. I don't believe freeing Hope will last soon after you leave.

Here is my own two cents, regarding the whole "Lae'Zel abandons Vlaakith and immediatly throws herself to Orpheus" thing. Premise: she was my chosen romance option for my first playthrough, so like you regarding Shadowheart I might be coming from a place of bias. With the prefice out of the way: to me it kinda Made complete sense, for the simple reason that My though process was "Well... She lived her entire life blindly devoted to someone else. Now that she found out that the person she was devoting herself to, never had her interest in mind, she still has difficulty escaping the mindset of utter devotion". The game sorta "proved" me right when (as my romance) she chose to NOT go with Orpheus, NOT devote herself again to someone else's cause as a mindless soldier, but instead chose a life of peace in persuit of her own happiness. If it wasn't clear, yeah: I'm on the "Lae'Zel storyline is even better if you romance her" camp 😂 Now for My second playthrough I'm playing Durge, and I plan to romance Astarion, another favorite character of mine as prickly and asshole as he was

I'm tired of earing about how the game changed because of "time restraints". Most of the things that were "removed" were decided years before release. Doing the upper city? They decided 3 years before release to not included it due to how bloated act 3 was going to be. The only time constraints we can see here is them deciding what was fun and what they wanted to include in the game. So unless we assume that they are lying, the only thing they cut short was some bug testing, some Minthara story bits and the epilogue. Really good video tho! Well if this is your first video you did a pretty good job 👏 I agree with a lot of your points, especially your labeling BG3 a flawed masterpiece because it is. The quality in Acts 2 then 3 falls away and it's obvious that Larian ran out of steam and time before they released the game but boy... they still created something incredible. You really have missed a hell of a lot and seeing that this video is only 2 weeks old, I really wonder why you missed all the updates that include the epilog party that wrapped up a lot of the storylines? For me, it's Karlach and Minthara who are the most interesting romance options. Minty is probably the one who you can guide the most or simply let herself be herself, which is evil but oh so amazing. Karlach is just lovely and you're absolutely right in that she should have been able to go to the house of hope after the final battle if you've killed Raphael. I was truly hoping that Larian would have patched the game further, including the upper city and reworking endings like Karlach's, even including a DLC but Hasbro shat the bed by being a pack of greedy souless cnuts which pissed off Swen Vincke so he said "fuck you" and walked. And that means no more really good content for BG3. It's done. We're never going to see anything like it again. Sure they'll make a new game and it's got a real shot at being something special but nothing will ever take the crown from BG3. It's achieved something incredible despite the flaws. Play it again and get some mods which fix some of the issues like adding in more customization for character faces etc. I am hoping that the modding community will be able to take BG3 and add more to it. Anyway, well done for this video

Honestly, Minthara is my favorite companion. She has so much to her character that she very well could've been an origin character in an evil playthrough. Hell, you can get her in a non-evil playthrough by knocking her out now, and she'll ridicule you to high hell lmao

I disagree about the open endings. I feel making them too definitive restricts the player's imagination about how things could develop in the future and how the player character would handle everything. In a game that is so much about free choice I feel it wouldn't fit properly to basically dictate what happens after. Also, Astarion does have some plot development in the second act if you have him along at specific points. It's less easy to miss if you're romancing him.

I definitely agree and I probably didnt make it clear enough in my video. I like the open ended stuff but for me there was just too much of it left to imagination. I feel like some closure on certain stories would help and in this case it just felt like it put the burden on the player to imagine what happened with almost everything. But I mostly agree with you and respect your opinion!
@paperbird9817

@NokayYT I think it comes down to taste. I like the idea of seeing only a small piece of a vast world and history, and I find it exciting when some things remain a mystery. But I didn't mean to invalidate your opinion, only add my own :)

@@NokayYTI think it's also a reflection of actual D&D play. When you finish a long campaign, assuming you survive, it often ends with "character A is going to sea with these old friends of his we saved, characters B and C are founding a city, character D is returning to his homeland to do a thing, maybe we see them again one day if the world is in crisis..." epilogue. About the only way a D&D character gets true closure is if they don't finish the campaign alive lol

Since the last patch you can have Minthara join your group as a companion even if you decide to kill the entire Goblin Camp SPOILER AHEAD Toggle to non-lethal attacks and knock her unconscious. Leave her where she is. ... ... ... ... ... ... You'll meet her again in Act II in Moonrise Towers: Enter the main hall where you meet Ketheric Thorm for the first time. Minthara will be there, in chains and accused of incompetence of not being able to retrieve the artifact from the Druids Grove. She is thrown into a torture chamber - free here and she'll join you later in Camp.

i think alot of the criticism is valid. I found myself anting more in certain parts of act 2 and more of act 3 in general. I did feel like most of the big fight were somewhat underwhelming except raphael and ketheric. I found myself wanting more even though my first playthrough was 300 hours. That shows how good the game is.

My thoughts exactly man. They could've done so much with Orin and Gortash if they had the same approach as act 1 but it seems like they phoned it in just a bit. But still my favorite game of all time even with that being said

My favorite quest was when you had to defend Halsins portal. I died so many times on tactician and had to redo it so many times lol. Also I love playing act 1 as a Druid cause there’s sooooo much unique Druid dialogue. I think my next playthrough will be either gnome wizard or possibly a half orc

I loved my interactions with Astarion as a Retribution Paladin. Like as I heard him talk about his master I was like: "nah, I am not just gonna help you, my vow is literally to hunt down those wretched, I am going out of my way to kill that Cazador to my last breath". And Astarion was like: "alright, cool, that seems like a reason to stick to you". He disliked pretty much all of my good boy choices, but he loved when I moved out of my way to punish and be overly aggresive to any evil people. At the time of the Cazador's resolution I was like "That's it, you are free now, you don't have to be afraid or follow any orders anymore" and he was like "nah, I am gonna finish this unholy ritual for my self". At that point, I clearly stated "I have support you all this time but if you are gonna become the next Cazador I am gonna hunt you down here and now". Like I LOVED that set up so much, is such a grand finale for a Ret Paladin and a Vampire Rogue redemption arc. Sadly, he got mad and left the party forever and I am not allowing that (he was wearing like 20 hours of grinding worth of equipment, lol), so I had to reload and try the other approach of being a bit nicer and tell him that he is better than that and that he is free now, and can start anew a be a good person, starting by freeing his Vampire's slave companions. And he seemed so happy with that choice, such a constrast with just a single line of difference, it is amazing. I would had loved to have a choice of smite him down to go back to his senses though.

I agree completely about act 2. Would have been cool if you lift the curse, but that lets the absolute's army flood the area and the boss fight is much harder

I've read that crafting was scrapped before early release, but that's why there's gems & stuff everywhere. Rope also had uses, and the infernal iron you find in act 3 was intended for Karlach's story. I look forward to an update when you romance Astarion & keep him in your party all of act 2, and go to the epilogue party. You can reload your first game just before you blow up the brain to go to that epilogue party. Because of his specific trauma & story, some things only come out for Astarion if you romance him. I think more of your questions can be answered by reading *everything*. After your first playthrough, its neat to read things and pick up on the foreshadowing or find clues you could have followed instead. Lae'zels romance is my second favorite (after Astarion). Having similar trauma, going from fanaticism to fanaticism isn't uncommon. do you know about Karlach's ending where she gets to stay (kind of)? Keep her in your party when you go to free Orpheus. At 1500 hrs, I'm getting down to testing story variations and I'm STILL finding new things hidden away in corners. I can feel the hyperfixation winding down, but there's still years of replayability in this for me. Best $60 i ever spent.

Crafting is also polarizing so I wonder if they just figured itd be better without it even though I wouldve liked it. And I think I definitely missed some stuff in my first playthrough which suck but I am definitely gonna be working through all of that in future play! And I agree, this game is worth every cent and honestly they couldve charged so much more and I would pay for it but I am glad they kept it there
