Right when I saw the 8 ball I yelled out gear shift knob! Nice video as always and one of those tips that will be in the back of my brain waiting for when I drill my next sphere. Nice point at the end, could be a 10 minute project but once you want to make it a video, plan for a few hours at least. Not everyone realizes the effort put into video making. Can I keep calling you kenbo?

As others have noted, gang drilling makes sense and saves time. Second, those are counterbores, not countersinks. Third,. make the bottom piece larger. Clamp the ball. Chuck up the bit you used for the big hole, and lower it into the target so the pilot will mark it. Clamp the larger bottom piece to the DP table and drill your preferred-size hole in the sphere. Your non-DP hand will be nowhere near the action. Safer, quicker, smarter.

Hello Excellent and interesting video. What I can’t understand is why you didn’t drill the two blocks at the same time. All measurements would then align perfectly. But saying that, thank you, you have helped me tremendously. Regards Frederick

Drilling them both at the same time or individually will yield the same results Frederick. That's the great thing about this hobby of ours....for every process or job that needs to be done, there are multiple methods of achieving that job. As long as it's safe, who is to say if it is right or wrong. Thanks for tuning in to the show and for chiming in with your suggestion. It's a great one and I truly appreciate it.

hi I like your jig which I made as well. Putting a fence to back stop the jig from moving and holding your hand SAFELY! against the jig is a good idea. I have seen others using their hand to hold the sphere while drilling and I think this is quite unsafe and waiting for accidents to happen

People do take an awful amount of risks in the shop, just hoping that they won't get injured. Glad to hear that you are safety conscience. We need more of that. Thanks for tuning in and for the kind words on the show.

Did you get it 100% in the middle of the number 8, or slightly to one side? You didn’t show that.
@acutabove_woodworkings

This was a long time ago and I don't remember if I got it exactly in the middle of the 8 or not. I do remember that I got it in the middle of the ball though which was the whole point of this jig in order to install it for my shifter. I hope this helps. thanks for tuning in to the show.

Sound , but just for safety , clamp the jig down also ...its only got to grab and spin and your pinkies won't like it .

Nothing wrong with that suggestion at all Franky. Anyone who has done any kind of drilling without clamping knows exactly the kind of pain that you are speaking of. Thanks for tuning in and for the reminder that a little extra safety will go a long way to keeping you injury free in the shop.

Why not label as block 1 & 2, clamp together, then drill all 5 holes together for exact alignment?

Absolutely no reason at all why this wouldn't work Gary. Great suggestion. It shortens my show considerably, but it's still a good suggestion. LOL. Thanks for tuning in.

Love the jig shown here. my question I have a project I am doing that requires that I drill a hole or part of a hole that is not in the center of a billiards ball, but is on the side of the ball but will only be in contact with about 3/4ers of the bit. I guess it would be cutting an opening not a hole. KINDA HARD TO EXPLAIN!! Need some help!!
@acutabove_woodworkings
5 жыл бұрын
If I understand correctly, you want to drill a hole that isn't centred. For this operation (and I will try to explain as best I can) I would build the jig but I would add a third board to it. The top and the bottom board would be the ones that hold the billiard ball and the third board would have a hole drilled in it that is in the exact position that you need the hole and the same diameter of the hole you need drilled. The purpose of the third board is to guide a forstner bit into the ball in the correct position AND prevent it from skipping all around the ball while the one edge of the bit is striking it. I hope this makes sense to you and if not, let me know and I will try and explain it in a different way. Thanks for tuning in to the show.

what about of the diameter of the ball varies and still the same jig is used to achieve precise center of the ball? Without drill press cannot make ball drilling jig?
@acutabove_woodworkings
5 жыл бұрын
As long as the ball will fit in the jig, the diameter of the ball isn't important. You may have to adjust the size of the jig to accommodate the size of the ball, that's all. As for the drill press. If you don't have one, you could still make the jig using a hand drill. You would just have to be a little more careful to pay attention and hold the drill squarely in the jig. It may not be as accurate as a drill press, but it would work. I hope this helps. Thanks for tuning in to the show.
