Great video, love the name Josie she is so cute. I like that you showed that you don't have to do it all at once. Make the changes you can and over time you improve it making it better and better as you learn. The point is to keep progressing in both skills and welfare for your animal. Job well done 👍🏼

Thank you so much! Yes she’s such a sweetheart as well! That’s exactly it; step by step, day by day we can improve not only for us, but primarily for our animals! Massive thank you again for the support, really is appreciated

I think you probably got one of the best approaches to the topic, just due to the fact that you actually decided to make the change and can actually lead by example. Your debrief unfortunately is missing a couple extra zeros at the end of the view count. When it comes to your setup, what im gonna say is derived from fish and plant keeping, so when it comes to bioactive vivs, im arguably somewhat talking out of my ass. Not gonna stop me from trying to add something of value :D When it comes to gravel, its hard to find anything more chemically inactive, hence its commonly used in aquariums. It just doesnt reallyinteract with water at all, so in tht regard it should be fine when it comes to toxins and such. The only difference to the clay balls is the fact, that gravel has a much smaller total surface area than clay balls, which serves as area for bacteria to grow. One potential difference, where im unsure of the actual difference in a viv is the fact, that clay balls actually absorb water, which likely increases transfer of water back into the top layers of substrate. With gravel this transfer cannot really happen and you might run into a situation, where the top substrate layers dry out and you have to spray it more frequently without water in the bottom being removed as only evaporation transfers water into the upper substrate layers. Eventually this might lead to a situation, where the entire gravel layer is filled with water, which may damage the wood of the viv or it might fill up to a point, where the water touches the upper layer of soil, leading to extremely soggy areas of soil, which comes with its separate risk such as scale rot and anaerobic conditions in the soil. Potentially consider a way to drain excess water from the bottom layer, but I may have missed that already existing during the build. When it comes to plants, they tend to need a surprising amount of light to grow. My window is facing east and several of my houseplants have been suffering from insufficient light for the last few months, despite getting some direct light in the morning, thus barely growing or even dropping a bunch of leaves. So a grow light might or just generallt placing the plant closer to the light source may be a good idea. Also plants tend to drop some old leaves under new light conditions, so some die off is to be expected. As ive mentioned previously, some water from fresh water fish tanks is usually good fertilizer. And one more thing that I know from fish keeping is that soft acidic water tends to have more bacteria than hard alkaline water containing a bunch of calcium. Soils will tend to acidify over time, as organic matter breaks down, so adding some calcium carbonate might be good to reduce excessive bacterial growth and stabilize soil pH to an extend. That last thing is something I also recently saw mentioned by keepers of exotic isopods. Anyways, hope some of this helps and Im really looking forward to see how this vivs and your reptile room in general will develop in the future :)

What an awesome response, thank you! Your continued support is massively appreciated, honestly! So yeah the drainage layer may not have been the best idea, but to be fair; we’re hopefully moving house in the next few months, so when I’m re-setting up I’ll change that drainage layer! 😂 luckily I won’t be spraying too much so hopefully shouldn’t be too big of a problem. I do like the idea of watering with fish tank water as well, must be full of good nutrients!
