I knew a guy from Poland that was trained like this. He was a phenomenal dancer with phenomenal training but he ended up HATING dancing and he quit by the time he was 20. He said his teachers used to throw shoes at him if he screwed up. His whole family danced and his dad regretted all the abuse his son took that drove him to hate dance.

The one thing i don't miss about ballet is crying every day from my instructors' harsh comments. When you're young you tend to be more sensitive, and ballet teachers can, let's face it, be unbelievably cruel. they can also be warm and wonderful.

Perm has had an amazing rate of gorgeous dancers...Not sure if I could endure class everyday like that. Can you imagine if we had classes in the US where the teachers said this:-) It makes me smile. The majority of my teachers were Russian, from the Kirov in fact, however, none treated us quiet like this.

i've had a russian teacher trained in that style and its very beneficial to dancers who have a great amount of potential but need to polish their technique. she was harsh, but in the long run i am appreciative. i do not think that kind of teaching is hurtful, if in moderation, i think it keeps your head on your shoulders and humble and helps you to respect ballet as an art.

And now, Oksana Skorik is one of the best in the world. She blossomed at Mariinsky Theatre, regardless of what the public thought of her. She was nurtured and now it is nice to see her smile and healthy (she was battling an eating disorder at Perm!). Her extensions are gorgeous, and her dancing is so soft, clean, and pure. It took a lot of struggle for her to get there, but she has become a ballerina, at last!

Personally, I think all teachers should have a time when they PUSH the students and when they can SYMPATHIZE with the students. An occasional compliment on how hard they are working wouldn't hurt at all even if you are screaming at them to stretch their knees, point their feet, and so on. That way the kids wouldn't lose their nerves like Oksana.

to quote from Tamara Rojo: Really good teachers don't need to bully their students, and if they do bully them it's because of their own insecurities. They usually don't know what they are talking about and are frustrated dancers who never made it. You can see the consequences later in life when dancers get anorexia, bulimia, and other problems. Analysis can contribute to helping these dancers, but I think it should be used more on the teachers who feel the need to be bullies

In such artforms as ballet, it is almost impossible to reach international without "live or die" attitide.I want to tell them not to lose heart, that they are beautiful and how I wish I could dedicate my life to ONE thing as they. With this, I see a glimpse of all the pain and abuse all dancers hide on the stage.

there is a difference between being a really tough teacher and being emotionally abusive. And that teacher was emotionally abusive. You do not call people idiots. You tell them that they are doing it incorrectly and that they are going to do it over and over until they do it right. When they do it right, you tell them so. Criticism is necessary in ballet but unless you then tell the girls when they correct their mistakes that they are doing a good job, you are accomplishing nothing.

Right well all i will say about this respect for tradition and the art right thats is what it is supposed to be about. Well you cant have respect for anything without self respect first. The teacher must respect the student otherwise they are not worth learning from and are not real teachers at all. Respect for the arts or sport or anything for that matter begins with self respect and respect for what it is to be human.
