Over the past 70 years, the US has invested more than $350 billion on ballistic missile defense (BMD), mostly on systems intended to intercept long-range nuclear-armed missiles that might be launched against the US by states such as North Korea. But would these systems be reliable and effective against such an attack?
The APS Panel on Public Affairs (POPA) technical study brought together 13 experts to investigate a number of key questions about US missile defense systems. Their report, released February 2022, raised critical concerns about US reliance and spending on BMD.
Study group leaders - Dr. Laura Grego (MIT), Prof. Fred Lamb (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), and Prof. James Wells (University of Michigan) - present the study’s main findings and answer audience questions with moderation by Prof. Steve Fetter (University of Maryland) in this recording of the February 16th, 2022 panel.
