A magnificent section of Irish cliffs is home to this oddly shaped beacon. Oddly, the "lighthouse" isn't even illuminated. Its white paint is intended to serve as a sufficient warning to any ships that go too close to the rugged coastline.
The British government gave the order to build the beacon following the Irish Rebellion in 1798. It was a component of a network of lighthouses that lined Ireland's coastline and served as a coastal warning system.
The current, conical lighthouse was built in the late 1840s to replace the earlier one, which finally started to deteriorate. It has grown to be a cherished emblem of Baltimore, a tiny fishing community in County Cork. Locals refer to the oddly shaped tower as "Lot's Wife," in honour of the Biblical figure who was transformed into a salt pillar. Visitors who circle the beacon are rewarded with breathtaking views of the sweeping sea and lush surroundings.
