About a year an a half ago my fiance died, and I remember I watched this scene over and over shortly after. Perhaps it seems silly, as it's just a kid's movie, but it gave me strength and courage to get through it somehow. I originally saw this movie when I was just 6 years old, and never knew I'd be using it in such an important way many years later.

This is the most memorable scene in the film. The fact that Balto says "Rosie" and starts crying about her shows that he's not putting himself through all this just to impress Jenna. He genuinely cares about Rosie and everyone else. Hell, I think he'd even try to save Steele if he was in danger and Steele's both his mortal enemy and his rival for Jenna's affection (not that Jenna had any feelings for Steele but that didn't stop him from trying). I love how this scene can be interpreted in different ways. The White Wolf could have been a friendly wolf who saw Balto and wanted to encourage him. However, I interpret this scene in a more spiritual sense. Perhaps the White Wolf is the spirit of Balto's mother or perhaps it was a hallucination representing Balto's own inner wolf. The fact that this scene can be interpreted in a variety of ways makes it very powerful.

Tom Norton As much as I'd like to think you're right, there are problems with both of those theories. In the sequel, Balto says his mother died when he was young. Or at least, that's the assumption we're led to. I can't remember the entire scene, but I do remember he says that Boris took him in when he was young. As for the hallucination theory, those only occur to the people who have them. The dogs at the top of the cliff thought Balto to be dead, but heard the howls of him and the other wolf. I think it might be more likely that that wolf, as well as the pack we saw in the early parts of the movie, were the pack that Balto's mother belonged to. His kin, really. In the earlier scene, we saw them inviting Balto to join them, but he turned away from them because, "all he knows is what he's not." It would make sense that they look after him if his mother was really one of them, does it not?

The white wolf was asked to Simon Well the director of Balto (the first one) and Simon's reply: "Whether the White Wolf is Balto's father or some kind of ephemeral Spirit of the Wolf is deliberately unstated. The White Wolf Sequence is still my favorite part of the movie, and James Horner's extraordinary score that accompanies it still raises the hairs on the back of my neck. We wanted to keep it mystical and vague - is this a real event or is it some kind of hallucination that Balto is experiencing? All of these were reasons to not have the White Wolf speak or in any way explain himself. Perhaps the Wolf is a manifestation of Balto's inner voice, telling him to take ownership and use that part of him that he has always been ashamed of - certainly that is the message Balto takes from the encounter, real or not. (And by the way, if it was really his dad why didn't the old man help him drag the antitoxin up the cliff?)"

"When we got our lowest point, we are open to the biggest change" This is the moment where Balto finally broke, he had been abused and abandoned his entire life and the fall with the medicine had the pain finally catch up to him. He had no reason to keep fighting and was ready to let the blizzard take him. But having the Wolf finally stare him square in the face with nothing else in the world brought to life the dead half of him. The world had taken everything he needed. But at 1:10 he refused to let the world take him away from everything that needed him.

Actually, he didn't. It was a relay. Balto got all the credit, but he only travelled the last leg of the journey. A sled dog named Togo led the longest, most hazardous stretch. That's not to say Balto didn't have his moment; the team for the last leg was asleep when Balto's team showed up, so Balto's team just continued on, all night (I think they were awake about 36 hours) in whiteout conditions.

Everyone in the comments section is saying "the white wolf is a phycological manifestation" others say "say its his mother because of film continuety" and while Im all for interpretation of art, I think I might be the only one who thinks it was just a friendly stranger who had no idea about Baltos internal struggle but just wanted to invite him to do some howling together. Life can be like that sometimes. a stranger passes through for just the right moment we need them. the universe is like that
