As a South African expat in Qatar the coronavirus pandemic disabled me to travel home to South Africa so I decided use my leave and have a vacation in Qatar. I chose none other than my favorite place in all of Doha, the Banana Island Resort Doha.
The journey began at the harbor by the corniche where I checked into my hotel room. I had booked a 7 day vacation at the Banana Island Resort Doha. The harbor port boasts comfortable seating, the staff provided me with delicious Arabian tea and snacks to eat while I was waiting for the luxury catamaran to transport me and other passengers to the island.
There is a catamaran that transports guests to the island from the city every hour for 24 hours a day. If you have a long layover in Doha with Qatar Airways I would recommend visiting the Banana Island Resort but only if your long layover is during the day and not at night. The island is entirely man-made and the journey between Doha Port and the Banana Island Resort is about 25-30 minutes.
I had a stunning premier sea room to stay in. The king sized bed was so comfortable and clean. The couch and coffee table made it easier to work on my laptop and eat my breakfast. There was also a private balcony to enjoy the view of the crescent beach. The coffee machine ensured I had a good kickstart every morning before I went to the beach. During the lockdown in Qatar , breakfast had to be served in the room but on my last day the breakfast restaurant opened again for hotel guests. I always ordered the American breakfast with fried eggs, pancakes and cereal . It was absolutely delicious and gave me great endurance for the rest of the day.
I spent most of the days by the pool at Q-Lounge. I would lie on the recliner enjoying the view of the beach while reading some of my books. The pool is spectacular and very soothing . There is even a hot tub in which guests can enjoy the breathtaking views of the sunset as the day comes to an end.
I would go swimming in the ocean every morning for training. I also bought my snorkel with me so I could go snorkel by the piers. I saw a variety of fish species such as sliver Moony fish, yellowbar angel fish as well as Mangrove Red Snapper Fish.
I am big into water sports so I went boat tubing along the island powered by a Seadoo Personal Water Craft. It was so much fun circuiting the island. I also did wakeboarding , I will admit it is very challenging with the sea been choppy. Unfortunately the jet boat was out of order so I had to be towed by a jetski and it cannot provide a large enough wake. As a result the ride was very bumpy and I suffered from exhaustion from the heat and tension from the ski rope. Above all it was a lot of fun.
There is also a children’s waterpark that features a small swimming pool as well as some water slides. I was given permission to use one of the children’s water slides and it still was a lot fun. I felt like being a child again.
Another very interesting water activity they had to offer was the hydro aqua water-bike. This particular boat drove like a bicycle on the ocean. It was quiet an adventure to cruise around the island with it. The peddles provided power to the propellor under the boat and pushed the boat forward. It almost had a similar design to catamaran which provide a lot more speed on the water. I also hired a Segway to drive around the beach during the evening it was a lot of fun.
One of Anantara’s most impressive features at the hotel was their spa. I had a luxury full body massage and a hydro bath. The spa is situated directly over the water so you get incredible views over the horizon. I also spotted a local bird of the Persian Gulf called the Socotra cormorant . They are black birds that dive into the water to hunt their prey and they hunt Hound Needle Fish.
On my last day I was presented with amazing views of the sunset. I had a last swim in the warm ocean and watched a Qatar Airways plane take off. You can spot planes taking off and landing in the distance but the noise levels are very low. I checked out of the hotel after my seven night stay and then boarded catamaran to transport me back to the city so I could go home. It was an amazing holiday in Qatar.
