For the time signature, the part that repeats itself is in 5/4, then where the lead guitar is ascending there is a number of bars in 2/4, but the first time there are 5 of them and the second time there are 6. You could decompose things differently but that's how I feel it at least.

Miku, rhythm guitarist, didn’t even know how to play when she formed the band back in 2013. Her original intention was to be the vocalist but decided to bring aboard Saiki as main vocalist for her superior rock style ability and sound. THEN she started learning on the fly from Kanami. Kanami is still her sensei to this day.💪🏻🤘🏻

She is my favorite musician at the moment, even though i love ALL maids, she stands out for me... Greetings from Germany

Fully agreed. Kanami is easily among my top songwriters of all times list, bar none. Pretty much the only one whose 99% of work is in my fav playlist. Considering how diverse their catalogue is, it’s boggles my mind how she does it everytime. Usually it’s 50-60% even for those that I grew up listening to. I just love how she always manages to balance out the intricate structure of their songs with very accessible catchiness. It’s an open secret but how she did it for 4 albums straight is a whole another thing.

I'm not sure if Kanami's the best songwriter but her composition to me is the most interesting, weird, wild and catchy, all at the same time. And all instruments add so much to their music. Kanami's raw, rough around the edge-y sound is unusual in Japanese guitarists. They all have the playfulness in their sound and kanami makes the best use of it.

What you are responding to is the incredible depth of music education in Japan. Akane and Misa both went to Tokyo School of Music (TSM) around the same time and have worked together a few times before Band-Maid. Kanami had a music tutor (all her siblings did too). I don't think she ever went to a music school/academy. Instead she got a finance/economics degree. Miku's training is more traditional. Japanese folk singing. She was convinced by her grandma to go pop to expand her career prospects. Her idol group didn't go anywhere and she worked in a maid cafe (where the Band-Maid inspiration came from) to make ends meet. No idea about Saiki but I get the feeling she did theatre.

Kanami has mentioned Carlos Santana, Larry Carlton as inspirations. And last October, she tweeted a beautiful tribute tweet for Eddie Van Halen, saying she loves his phrasing and tapping. Kanami uses a backing track of her tapping, and it runs along her tapping live. Most bands use backing tracks in songs. Lovebites Swan song, Miyako does piano backing tracks that play as she's on guitar. Though in Burden of time, she does play both guitar and piano at same time.

The "harmony" guitar sound that appears in the second and third sections is actually a backing track - they've made no secret of the fact that they use backing tracks during live shows to get a fuller sound. Sometimes it's a guitar and, more recently, additional vocal tracks have used as well. Akane used to be in control of the tracks from a console next to her kit but I'm not sure that's still the case.
@jonasw3945
3 жыл бұрын
Whenever they use them it's just to add some synth or something like that, I think the harmony was most likely a synth, it doesn't have neither the guitar tone of Kanami nor Miku and it does sound very synthy. Never seem themy use guitar back tracks as far as I know and from all the lives I've seen from them.
@billb.5183
3 жыл бұрын
I noticed that too after many viewings. You can tell that Miku is still playing her normal rhythm part when the "harmony" track kicks in. I can't think of any other songs where they use a guitar back track though. They usually use them for piano or synth parts. Nothing wrong with that. Whatever works.

BLOOMING is another great taping song. KANAMI taps in THRILL as well, she is well versed in tapping. MISA plays with a pick and slaps in the same song and changes from one to the other very quickly! From a radio interview - - (Chris): What amazed me most about your play style is the changing of picking to slapping, and then picking again so smoothly. Some bassists may throw their picks away to slap, but you use the same pick when you change from slapping to picking again, right? (Misa): No, I don't throw my pick away. I have become better as I practiced. For the recent 2-3 years, I haven't lost any pick. (Chris): Show me how. (Misa): I keep the pick with my index finger and palm. (Chris): Then you slap the bass with your thumb and middle finger? Can you show me how you play? (then Misa shows how) (Misa): Because I've been practicing these days, I can change faster than ever. (Chris): You are mixing them up! That's awesome! (Misa): I think anybody can do it if you practice. Misa - BASS GUITAR plays Black Cloud "Smoker" and Privat Reserve (SG Style) bass - Orange AB200B MKIII Amps KANAMI asks HERMAN LI from DRAGON FORCE what the fastest song he has played - he answered with 215(?) KANAMI said she would write a song to match or beat that. She comes close with DIFFERENT. KANAMI's inspiration is CARLOS SANTANA - Main reason she plays with a PRS Custom 24 and MESA BOOGIE Amp. PLAY is another song that was supposed to be an instrumental but SAIKI was feeling left out.

Their range of styles and genres is amazing. Do not forget their lyrics. The newer videos have quite good subs and are safe to react to. I would recommend "About Us" live for a ballad with subs. It's love song to their fans during Covid times with amazing vocals, if you want to experience a sample of their lyrics. "Warning!" is a headbanger with good lyrics translation and a high energy video about the record labels, if you prefer a more metal song. "Wonderland" could be an alternative if you like to hear them do a style that sound like no one else. "Daydreaming" if you want to react to a masterclass in composing. There are so many more! "Alone", their first own song they were allowed to record, "Blooming", "Rinne" or...well, don't bather about recommendations! No matter what you pick, you can't go wrong. The worst you can do is pick a genre that is not in you flavour!

I found Band-Maid about two and a half years ago while being bored at work watching silly Japanese Music videos. (see Baby Metal "Gimme Chocolate"). They kept popping up in my recommendations, but the thumbnail clearly showed them wearing silly Maid costumes. But hey, that day I was watching silly videos. OMFG! is all I can say. After you watch and listen to these musicians you will never think of them as silly. The first thing I focused in on was the Drummer. I had assumed this was just another Pop-Idol group where the girls just sing and dance, looking cute as they do their thing. But from the first ("Start Over") the Drummer was clearly playing. It went from this kind of light guitar pop to slowly built up piece that had me clicking on the next one on the list: "Thrill." A total throwback to 80s Hard Rock nearly Metal. The drummer is sprinkling in double pedals and just keeping it rock solid. At this point I'm impressed and had to keep going. "Real Existence" is what put me over the edge. Akane (I had read the comments to find out her name at this point) goes completely Keith Moon wild on the drums while never losing control. Each verse, each chorus and the guitar solo all have multiple sub sections on the drums, and it is simply amazing. Simple, but ever moving, changing and perfectly locked into the rest of the music. So, after watching every last official video on their channel multiple times, made my first iTunes purchase EVER (and first money spent on new music in DECADES) I called up a friend of mine who had played guitar professionally in Japan back in the 90s. "Dude, I just found THE MOST AMAZING Japanese band! and they're all girls! and all dressed up li...." "Oh, you found Band-Maid, here, let me send you a link" ONSET. I think I cried. I've not been THIS into a band since first learning to play drums listening to Rush. They are THAT good.

She always says Carlos Santana, including why she was drawn to PRS (he was an early adopter in the 80s). Here is a tune that to me sounds similar, instrumental, same key & approx speed, maybe feel (the maybe not to someone listening closely to creative Akane). I have zero evidence, nbd, but like the creation of BandMaid soon after a Doll$Boxx video spotlit the gap between hard rock with maid outfits, Onset came out soon after Gacharic Spin (aka Doll$Boxx) put this out. But this is “Nicorin’s Commuter Rush” kzitem.info/news/bejne/t453qGxpq2KdlYY , a piece about Guitar TomoZo’s experience 100,000,014 years ago when she was born on planet Nicorin. She the one dressed as lil Bo Peep, not to be confused with the princess in a bedazzled neckbrace, the drumming cyclist, nor the cheeseburger’s impression of Keith Emerson. If you still can’t tell, look for the guitar, she uses PRS too 😉🎸💃😎

Regarding the odd time signature, according to the band score in the magazine "Young Guitar" (February 2021), for the 1st time before going into the main tapping melody line, there are 4 bars in 5/4, 2 bars in 4/4, then 1 bar in 2/4. For the 2nd time, it's 3 bars in 5/4, then 3 bars in 4/4.

They have talked about the creative process they go through as a band, Kanami will come up with the general tune and riffs and give the others a demo. Akane and Misa then develop their parts off that while Miku writes the lyrics and works with Saiki on how it all goes together lyrically (Japanese and English). By the time it's all said and done you have the Band Maid sound, so different yet familiar. Totally awesome in all the variations they develop. In one interview Akane said she came up with 3 drum arrangements from simple to hard then insane. Of course she said they all chose the insane version of the drums. That is one aspect of their uniqueness, they all have input and say in the final product. Great review!

A few great tracks from the last year-ish: VOLA - "Straight Lines" Maelføy - "Emptiness Inside" or "Everything" Sleep Token - "Sugar" Ultra-Violence - "The Pain" They're not all as technical as Band Maid, and none of these songs would net you the kind of views a Band Maid or Nightwish reaction does, but these are all killer tunes in my not-at-all humble opinion. "Interview with and-Maid on Player Magazine - September 2018 issue" www.reddit.com/r/BandMaid/comments/gdxff6/interview_with_bandmaid_on_player_magazine/ "Kanami: I was a singer-songwriter and I used to sing with an acoustic guitar. But I also liked the electric guitar and Santana. I started the guitar because of Larry Carlton, though (laughter)." They go into detail on their songwriting methodology (at least as it was then) and their musical backgrounds. It isn't very long and is well worth the read. Edit to add another Thank you to the music gods for giving us Larry Carlton, as if he hadn't done enough as it is.

Kanami and the gang may not be as technical as Lovebites and Nemophila, but their compositions are def more creative and full of WTF moments, great bridges, transitions and so on. You can't go wrong with any of the suggestions people are offering. There's no video for one of their most WTF progressive songs, "Giovanni", but if you watch the lyric video a fan made for it, look for the instrumental video Band-Maid did. Trust me, not too many could comprehend the song until they also saw the instrumental video. It's not an official video so you may need to find it elsewhere. But my vote for your next official mv is "Different" which delivers a prog punk song that will also blow your mind. "

These ladies are 5 happy, face melting Ninjas! Another ROCK band with many crossover fans with Band-Maid is a young sister Power Trio from Mexico: The Warning! I think you would really enjoy them. Here is song off their Second Album, Queen of the Murder Scene, called Dull Knives. This video is recorded live in their home basement studio, known as The Warning Cave: kzitem.info/news/bejne/joyLqa6nfauAl34

Band-Maid is not an “ordinal rock band”, but it’s a string-instrument ensemble, which is just like a classical chamber music, formed with the 1st guitar, the 2nd guitar, and the 3rd, “5-string” base, plus the percussion. This way, you could look into BM more deeply… I think.

Kanami is not as technical as the guitarist from Nemophilia or Lovebites. She does though do an incredible job of composing and always serving the song. I love all 3 of the bands by the way and hate picking best or even favorites.

And yet for me of those three it's only Kanami's playing that I can listen to all day. I admire the crazy guitar technique in some of those other bands, but they don't give me the feels like Kanami's playing does.

I got into tapping with my first Ibanez. Gibson's are great guitars, but Ibanez practically beg you to tap and pull. Low strings, smooth action and they don't sacrifice tone. Sorry I sound like a commercial, but the guitar you have really influences your playing.
