Every episode of Band of Brothers is amazing, but if I had to rank them, then this is number 10. Still an awesome episode. It's a nice persepctive on the war. You can feel the change in the air.

The animosity towards Webster was artistic license. If you read his book, he does describe Easy Company as worn out, but also that he was welcomed back with smiles.

@@carlengel8501 They seemed to take quite a bit of artistic license with Webster for some reason. You have what I mentioned, what IncogNito mentioned above, and if you remember in "Replacements", he gave a Dutch boy some chocolate and his father states he had never tasted it before, his book describes how the father was alone, and asked him for some chocolate to take to his son because his son had never tasted it.

They took artistic license in many parts of the series. I've read Webster's memoir as well as Malarky's and Winters. Also a collaboration with Ed Shames and a professional writer. Not to mention BoB.

I thought this episode showed a lot about how the US Army worked during the war. As the patrol is getting ready to leave, Lt. Jones is told to let the NCOs take the lead. This was so very true in a rifle company in the ETO. My dad was a company commander from the start of the Bulge to the end of the war. He told me that he depended on his sergeants for most day to day operations. He would later put his 1st Sargent in for a battlefield commission. If there was any doubt about what a great leader Dick Winters was, this episode removed any doubt. I would have wanted to serve under an officer like him. He got the job done but used common sense in doing so.

One of my favorite episodes. When do you disobey a direct order.? It took great courage to disobey a direct order. The look on all the men's faces showed this. Especially the west point officer Jones. They all new what Winters was doing. It was especially funny previously when Winters asked Nixon. What intel did we get from the prisoners and he answered Hitlers favorite color. He knew there was no value in another patrol as they were going off the line. I liked the look on there faces when he said. Get a good nights sleep. I like the fact that Winters took personal responsibility for the briefing and supervised the bombardment. So it would look like there was an actual patrol.

I once talked to an Indian army officer. When he was in the Indian Officers Training Academy (OTA Chennai) as a cadet in his senior terms he would have mandatory watch of various war movies every Saturday afternoon on the OTA cinema hall. Band of Brothers would show 2 episodes on one sitting. Ep 8 was his personal favourite apparently. Guy absolutely fawned over Winters and Webb.

I never took the comments from the men about Malarkey being chosen to lead the patrol being concerned about their own well being. Instead Grant and Heffron in particular seemed to be concerned for Malarkey who had not had a break in combat - I believe that he was in more consecutive combat days than any other member of the company.

Winters mentions that Webster wrote a book about Sharks but does not mention that "Myth and Maneater: The Story of the Shark" by Webster became the inspiration for Peter Benchley's Book that would later become the movie Jaws.

I think there is a bond through trauma and loss. Maybe you are projecting.
@VTdarkangel
4 ай бұрын
It's trauma bonding. They've experienced the same horrors and understand each other's pain in ways no one else can. They know they can absolutely rely on their fellow vets because they have seen them prove themselves under some of the worst conditions imaginable. I know some combat vets, and this is how they've explained it to me. There's no sexual element in it. They simply trust each other absolutely.

It could be that Webster understood that Malarkey wasn't in the best state of mind to be leading that raid and worked things out so that Winters could see it. Then Winters observing Martin could see that he was in a far better mindset to keep men from getting killed unnecessarily.

Tom Hanks even enlisted his own son into the War...This is when Winters essentially "Dad arms" and protects his men of Easy Company in anyway he can, even by lying to command. I love the way they express so visually the soldiers experiences by the appearance of their uniforms. Webster's guilt is what leads him to volunteer for the patrol and earn respect from the men again...

My favorite episode. I enjoyed the different interactions between the men in this episode. The acting and the writing was excellent especially is several subtle moments, like Winters calling off the mission, the banter between Webster and the other men and Jones although a new inexperienced officer was still respected by the others. The final scene of the episode when Jones and Webster acknowledging each other when they made eye contact and Webster being helped into the truck. A powerful and emotional ending.

Winters, Spiers, and Nixon were all "90 Day Wonders" Lipton was a "Mustang Officer." Jones was a West Point Graduate who had spent 4 years learning how to be an officer. Given the shortage of officers in Easy Company, why would they promote Jones and move him to Battalion Headquarters instead of leaving him with Easy where he could get some real leadership experience and learn from the Best, being Winters and Spiers.
