I was the one of the oldest recruits in my US Air Force Basic Training Flight decades ago. Same age as our Instructor, a ripe old 25! I joined so old party out of employment desperation. I was an immigrant and my foreign educational bona fides weren’t taken seriously. Enlisting was a familiar exercise for me though. I had Reserve Army Training in my native country as a teenager. “Going back” into uniform, and all that entailed going Active Duty, was not something I had planned for my 20s.

I once read a comment about him saying, "If Sobel didn't train E Company, they would have all died, but if he led them in battle, they would have died." There's some truth to that. I would expect no less from his son or any other close family member. This was mentioned from the book ⬇️ As training continued throughout 1942, Sobel never tired of pushing the men to the brink of exhaustion, running them over the obstacle course and taking them on nine-mile runs with full packs, rifles and machine guns. Sobel’s favorite exercise was the Friday-night thirty-five-mile nonstop hike with full gear. He would order canteens to be filled with water at the start of the hike, and expected them to still be full when they got back. Harsh punishment awaited any man who sneaked a sip.Winters grew disgusted with Sobel’s increasingly harsh treatment of the men. Walking the ranks during inspection, Sobel would bark out, “dirty stacking swivel,” “dirty gun sight” or “dirty ears,” and dock the men leave time. Sometimes the punishments were just, sometimes they were not and other times they were sheer fantasy. It didn’t matter to Sobel, but it did to Winters, who was often ordered to come up with a list of infractions, real or imagined.Sobel’s habit of canceling leaves as punishment was not a hardship for the socially reserved Winters. While many of the men crossed the street to the Wagon Wheel or walked a short distance down the highway to the Hi-Dee-Ho to tip a few beers, Winters was just as happy remaining on the base. When he did go into Toccoa, it was often to attend church, where he was usually invited for dinner at the Sunday School superintendent’s home. Winters did take a short leave to meet his mother who, in what Winters felt was probably the biggest single adventure of her life, came to visit her son at camp.

Quote from Wiki. "In the late 1960s, Sobel shot himself in the head with a small-caliber pistol. The bullet entered his left temple, passed behind his eyes, and exited out the other side of his head. This severed his optic nerves and left him blind. He was later moved to a VA assisted living facility in Waukegan, Illinois. Sobel resided there for his last seventeen years until his death due to malnutrition on September 30, 1987. No services were held for Sobel after his death."

I read the book before watching this series, and I also joined the Army (11B - Infantry Rifleman) 2 years before this series. I deployed to Iraq in 2006. My Drill Sergeant had read the book, and he made us yell Curahee during Basic Combat Training. In the book, an Easy Company Veteran said, "Captain Sobel MADE Easy Company." And he emphasized the word "MADE" during an interview with the author, Stephen Ambrose. There is nothing incorrect about what Sobel is doing in this scene. He is demanding attention to detail. During Basic Combat Training, my wall locker was usually squared away, but if there was even the smallest imperfection in our wall lockers, the Drill Sergeant would dump the wall locker (lean it over and empty the contents on the floor), and we would have to start over. And we never hated the Drill Sergeants for doing this. We loved them to the end. Attention to detail and strive for excellence. Good job on the portrayal here David (and other actors).

By being the the embodiment of the term Nemesis, Sobel gave the men of Easy Company something to hate. By giving the men a common enemy, they were easily more susceptible to working as a team. It didn't matter how different each man was physically or idealogically, they were united in their hatred of Sobel and subsequently united in all aspects of training for war. But this was at the height of his "Friends" fame. I was watching Band of Brothers with 9 people. We were pretty excited because of the hype over the series. Then when Sobel appears and shouts "YOU PEOPLE ARE AT THE POSITION OF ATTENTION", EVERYONE Laughed hysterically. Everyone was like "OMG! it's Ross!". The moment was totally lost. I remember hearing on talk radio that the national viewing audience thought the same thing. He was "Ross". No getting around it. Again, schwimmer is a fine actor and played the role well. I do admit after re watching Curahee and reading again. He is a complete prick. But with that training he shaped heroes and people who could actually fight.

To his credit, watching this for the first time in years; NGL I probably wouldn't have sunk that knife-throw he pulls off before reminding everyone about the weekend passes he stole like a thief in the night. Give this man a knife within range of ol' Adolf and the war may have been a lot shorter...

He didn’t throw the knife, he dropped it and let gravity do the work so it stuck in the ground easily.

@@CannonKushh nail this five times in a row and get back to me. I'm an expert; having dealt with gravity my whole career (And before) I know an assassin when I see one.

He didn't drop it. He threw it. You can clearly see his arm move downward

Sobel was incompetent when he came to fighting and during the war, But it was the Training that forged Easy company together and it is what made them last the war. It made them brothers. If you go back and watch Curahee you would see this, How when one is forced to run the 2 mile up and 2 mile down they join in together. Sobel made them tough and strong. He is what made Easy last the Normandy invasion through to the end of the war, So yes he is an unknown hero.

Agreed. He was there and he fought. I can't take that from him and I truly respect that. I just don't buy that "If it wasn't for Sobel..." argument cause from all I watched and read he really was that one prick amongst the heroes. And it doesn't bring me any joy to point that out... I'm just saying. Nevertheless... he fought during WW2 and that's more than I'll ever do with my life.
