this was Jimi's perfect band as I always felt he had a soul,R&B funk sort of feel to everything he did and while he is the king of the Rock Guitarist he was more than that and the rock band that was created around him wasn't what he needed in order to get where he wanted to go. if he had a few more years with Buddy and Billy I think those albums would have been incredible

Love the sound of the Band of Gypsies. Hendrix electrified the sound of soul as he did with every other genre he touched with an otherworldly sound only he could produce. Love Billy Cox and Buddy Miles, though Buddy was no where near the drummer Mitch Mitchell was. But, soul’ music was definitely in Buddy’s wheel house and Band of Gypsies is a testament to that.

@@kelvendyson1508 A fitting description, since his style was very solid rythmically, with a lot of assertiveness on the kick and snare (kind of sounds like a cement mixer). I think he said it endearingly, since he also said he liked Buddy's drumming on the Band of Gypsy's album. But their styles were worlds apart. While i think Mitch was a more technically proficient drummer, I think Buddy was a better fit for the musical direction Hendrix was heading. Too bad that there was so much conflict between Jimi and Buddy, which ultimately ended his career with the band.

Band of Gypsys was the way Jimi was headed. But his management wanted to keep the Experience going because that's where the money was .At least that's what I read. Anyhow Jimi connected with the Black community big time with this album.
@Rockstaralan
4 жыл бұрын
Exactly! His manager, Mike Jeffrey, saw only dollar signs in his eyes and thought that the Gypsys wouldn't be as big of an overall draw as the Experience. So, he selfishly pressured Jimi into dropping the Gypsys and reforming the experience with Billy Cox on bass. Sadly, in much of the live footage of this time (particularly the Isle of Wight show), Jimi's playing (along with Mitch's) was subpar at best. You could tell that his heart just wasn't in it anymore. But he felt obligated to please the man who signed his checks. And it showed. No wonder he wanted to terminate his agreement with this guy. Well, that's okay. Because at least we know that, three years after Jimi died, Karma paid Mike Jeffrey a visit when he was killed instantly in a head-on airplane collision! PS. I have reason to believe that Jimi's death was no accident (such are the theories floating around that Jeffrey had him poisoned to death because he was looking to get out of his contract).

The Gypsies time was brief, but memorable. Machine Gun at the Filmore was one of his greatest moments. Whether Jimi would've continued the band is debatable since he went back to using Mitch shortly after their debut album. I think Mitch was more free form and perhaps that allowed Jimi to improvise more freely.
@Rockstaralan
4 жыл бұрын
And if you listen to any of the 1970 recordings that have since been released with Mich playing on them, you'll immediately notice that his playing was getting somewhat sloppy and his meter was all over the place. Plus, he began making a habit of missing the '1' when coming back in from a fill. To say nothing of his laughable attempts at using a double bass drum setup, when it was clearly NOT a good fit for him. You might say that by then, he became a PALE shadow of the ferocious young animal who lit a fire under Jimi's arse on those first three Experience albums. By many accounts, Mitch had been drinking heavily by that point in time, which might explain the drop in quality of his playing compared to a few years prior. Jimi's decision to bring Mitch back had zero to do with improvisational abilities or anything else. It was only because his unscrupulous manager, Mike Jeffrey, pressured Jimi into dissolving Band Of Gypsys and reforming The Experience, because he saw that as more of a proven moneymaker and the Gypsys as "more of a financial risk". Although Noel Redding flatly turned down the offer to come back, Mitch was all in without hesitation (he probably needed the money for his booze habit and then some). Billy Cox was retained for bass duty, and that was the lineup of the experience that stayed in place until Jimi's death.
@Fontsman

@@Rockstaralan I still prefer Mitch and he sounded in shape on Woodstock and at the Isle of Wight. The one that we'll all agree on is Mike Jeffrey.That man was the dark destroyer if ever there was.
