Annie & Archie (Resident Peregrine Falcons & Parents) have four chicks this season and now they received their new leg bling! Raptor Biologist Gavin Emmons & Dr Zeka Glucs of the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Center, in addition to the crew of UC Berkeley facilities staff, arrived at the nest to band the falcon chicks. Since there were four chicks, they sent up two banding stations so the process could be more streamlined. We have two females and two male chicks this season (the youngest being a male (Blue 72/BA) who were three weeks old (the youngest hatched two days after his siblings).
Band numbers and colors on the chicks:
Female #1: 2447-05485, 29/BC Yellow tape
Female #2: 2447-05484, 28/BC Green tape
Male #1: 1266-17083. 71/BA No tape
Male #2: 1266-17082, 67/BA Blue tape
The tape is a temporary indicator to help identify the chicks during fledge watch (which is a lot easier to ID them then using band numbers).
All four chicks are healthy and well fed. Annie stayed nearby for the entire banding process.Once the banding was completed, both Annie and Archie stopped the nest defense and swooping and came to feed their chicks. It was a very successful banding day and many thanks to the entire UC Berkeley team and biologists for making this a smooth and seamless process!
This was a special banding day to have four healthy chicks - the first time since 2017! Thank you for watching!
