Doubtful to happen for at least 5 yrs. It was never part of the original MRT Yellow line plan going back to 2004 when it was a heavy rail line. BSR (BTSC sub.) only proposed the ext in Sept 2016 when they were bidding for the line. However, MRTA has never approved it & it is opposed by BEM. It will however be in the next Master Plan map due out in August so it will happen in the future.

It's so sad for me as US citizen to see once considered third world countries leaving the US behind in the dust. Egypt, Panama, the Dominican Republic, and others are all building monorails like this. The US is so invested in its old transit technology and is so controlled by the oil, auto and highway industries that green, ultra-modern systems like this is impossible to build in any US city. We here are still pouring asphalt like it was 1970.

@joetrey215

As this is likely being read by an international audience, I will make the effort to point out that I believe this comment is highly misleading as to problems in US transportation. The oil, auto, and highway interests do not block rail systems any more than they block interstate highway systems. For example the extension of the I-69 expressway from Indianapolis to the Mexican border (the "NAFTA Highway") is currently far from completion. It was approved by Congress in 1991. It received an additional designation and importance as a declared "corridor of the future" on 2007. It is still mostly incomplete. It is American disfunction rather than the influence of a handful of industries which prevents progress in transportation in the US. The generations who built those derided legacy systems are gone now. Current generations apparently have other priorities. [Edited for grammar corrections]

We're still a third world, everything is concentrated in Bangkok. I cannot in my right say that Thailand has escaped the third world status. Maybe in 20 years after the High-speed Rail, Metro system in other cities other than Bangkok and the EEC has come to fruition, only then i can even considering that.

What do you mean old transit technology? This video has monorail system. It is sized for target riders with many stops and short distance. (and city density) What specific transit agency is controlled by oil industry? How is capital and operation expenses funded for public transit in your city?
@darwinjina

@@joetrey215 I would also add that various US transit agencies are now faced with the hollowing out of their host cities. Ridership has not resumed to pre-covid volumes due to 'work for home' work culture. Bus routes are changing due to new rider patterns, but rail is not as flexible.

@yappofloyd1905

The original yellow line was proposed as a monorail back in 1996. When OTP formulated the 10 line Master Plan in 2004, the MRT Yellow line was proposed as a heavy rail line just like the Blue Line underground along Latphrao Rd & then elevated along Srinakarin rd. Then in 2012, the MRTA changed it to monorail essentially to reduce construction costs. The line should be heavy rail given pax projections. Would be a smoother ride also.

It looks like they made the same mistake as they did here in my home town when it comes to wheelchair or mobility challenged passengers - they didn't coordinate the height of the train with the height of the platform thus necessitating a ramp which is not always available, causes delays and also needs palnning to have one available on the discharge station when the train pulls in. Was changed by the MRTA in 2012 from a heavy rail line to a monorail to essentially save on construction costs. However, it ended up costing more anyway esp with the delays. It should be a heavy rail line as the 2 other MRT lines. 3 more monorail lines are planned unfortunately.

@@yappofloyd1905 already ran into problem only a couple of weeks of operation. I knew that it would be like this. I've watched many Rail enthusiasts' videos on this, they all agreed that the Monorail system is inefficient, prone to breakdowns and short lifespan. It would seem that they were right. I hope against all the old heads in the Government to realize this fact and decided to change course with the rest of the planned Lines and go with light rail. Khonkaen had already made a home grown prototype of a tram. It can easily be remodeled into a Light Rail. I can already see just how cheaper it would be if Bangkok would just cooperate with Khonkaen on this. I hope Khonkaen build their Tram quickly, so the central Govt can see for themselves just how cheaper and much more efficient a Light Rail could be.

@@darwinjina The monorail sets will be expanded to 7 carriages as pax numbers rise. Can't really convert to light rail as it means demolishing the concrete track and then building a viaduct along the whole line assuming the support pillars can support the extra weight. @@yappofloyd1905 its a wannabe light rail. No one that has light rail considers it in the same vein. lol. But, to be fair, each has their role. For us, monorail is too limited. light rail is right for most usage. But, yea, it can get overwhelmed in a hurry. When a heavy rail (2 story) car unloads their passengers, it will take multiple light rail to handle it. For that new line in Bangkok, it sounded like money was a main constraint. Monorail is good for limited/niche light capacity usage. (imho, not worth it) Personally, I like light rail. but for high density traffic, then you need the heavier rail.
