I did interview the weekend of Banjothon,2013 but it ended up with a recording error. He was not at last year's event, but you are so right and he is on my list, just have to find the location and time to get it done. thanks for the observation. David

Jim picks are curled around the ends of his fingers more than most great players. He plays hard and pulls from underneath and releases. 90 degrees would case you to reach into the strings to hit them, he attacks at a much flatter angle. Hope this helps David

That is a great post......so true. It is much more about experiencing sound and you cannot do that by any recording.....It is the best sounding conversion banjo I have ever owned and the video does not do it justice. I just love to watch Jim's recation when he plays, he physically gets involved.... thanks.

@1937rb75 Hell yeah! This past weekend I attended the Midwest Banjo Camp near Lansing, MI, and I met him for the first time, and he's the nicest guy you'd ever wanna meet! He let me pick the banjo he had that weekend, and he played my own. Man, that banjo never ever sounded that good until Jim laid his hands on it. Jim and I both took turns exchanging breaks on Fireball Mail, and we both had a blast! Did I mention my banjo was a Gold Star instead of a Gibson?

Upgrading a banjo to an HR30 is not an inexpensive decision. I have been more than satisfied with my decision.....

It doesn't necessarily make the tone worse, it just makes it a bit different. When I play softer melodic tunes, I frequently turn my pick on an angle, so the notes are a bit fatter, and warmer. Alan Munde, who is an amazing player plays like that all the time, but he plays a stelling, so I think possibly the warmer sound of angled picks when combined with the hugeness of sound of a stelling makes it sound normal.

@DavidHedrick Wow, well, I have been thinking about replacing my retro Huber with an HR-30 myself. This is convincing me.

Pickaway or Pick Along? I think both are two different tunes.

It sounds out at a Gsharp tone....I would say slightly on the tight side. The ring does not really care, looser gives a flatter, less pronounced tone. Tighter is edgier.....David

Are his fingerpicks striking the strings at an angle. I've heard you sacrifice volume and tone if your picks aren't at 90 degrees to the strings. Hmmmm. I've seen great banjo players with their picks turned at a slight angle, and they still sound teriffic, so I guess that sorta blows that theory out of the water. Any thoughts on that out there in banjoland?

When I first started playing I was concerned about lots of technique details like this. Over the decades each of those individual technical concerns, were slowly one by one, proven by absolutely awesome players, to be inconsequential. Eventually, it became painfully clear that the only truly necessary requirement to becoming a proficient player...was to play...alot.

Amazing how people still think these are still Gibsons when they yank out the original tone ring and put a clunker in it. Its not a Gibson anymore.
