This was a nice place. Former residents miss it. These aren't alienating high rises. There is some sort of disconnect here. Those were sturdy buildings, too. They could have been renovated, but to what end? I think there needs to be some sort of pathway to ownership to get people to take care of the place. A real estate millionaire once pointed out that he always sold his places for about what rent would be. People took good care of them. When the occasion came he had to foreclose he still had a good building. Maintenance should be built in to a place like that. The residents should be trained to do it and provided incentives. Maybe just give people a break in the codes and let them build what they like. Shelter doesn't have to be palatial, it just needs to keep the weather off, be low maintenance and sustainable. Considering the extortionate and prohibitive cost of shelter these days, I think if these people were free to build as they like they might teach us a thing or 2. Concentrating people in a poverty black hole has dismal results. Has it ever worked? And yet the same thing is done over and over expecting a different result. Why do I get the impression these places are designed to fail? Somebody is making out here but it isn't the tenants.
@sloppystick
6 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your input and you have some good ideas. There are theories that these were designed to fail but I think it's a learning process. I don't think it was possible to know how public housing would work out in the future because initially they were designed for lower middle class and working class folks. They were well maintained and residents had a sense of pride in home...."flower box effect". Only later did public policy change and with those changes came the negative stigmas we think about today.

@terminuszone1
6 жыл бұрын
randy owens I'm not saying the government does support you. What I'm saying is that it's deeper than what you see. Most of the people living in public housing are senior citizens or young, single female headed households. You can be productive and take care of your property and self like you said or get the same amount of money from the government to do nothing. What would you do if you had kids, had to pay for child care, pay to take public transportation to and from spending hours working making minimum wage (minimum wage is not enough to pay for all that, food and rent combined) or would you stay home, watch your own kids, not deal with the stress of a shitty job, the stress of public transportation and get the same amount of money as if you were working because you don't have to pay someone to watch your kids or pay for transportation so you can keep more of your money. The government has created this "give me handouts" culture. Basically, would you rather bust your ass for a little bit or sit back and get that little bit for free. People want to work but there is no incentive too when it's free. When public housing was first built people paid a higher percentage of their income for rent providing more money for the government to keep the properties in good shape. That all changed due a government reform so people paid less money and government stopped taking care of the property. I think it's crazy how you and other folks look at this video as if people still live there. Bankhead had been closed down gutted for demolition and y'all are acting as if these were the conditions the folks lived in. I wonder if y'all are blind or just ignorant? Now I agree everyone should have some sense of pride and honor in their doings but people are lazy.... all ethnicities are guilty of being lazy and opportunist. The government creates those opportunities. Y'all are just assuming one particular ethnic group lived in these apts and that's ignorant as well. Think man.... there is more to it than meets the eye.
@terminuszone1
6 жыл бұрын
randy owens also your comment is implying that folks have the same support system. I used mentor kids in these apts. Their mothers were kids too still learning life and being immature. Be glad you have been blessed with a support system or just the desire to get out and be productive. Not everyone is so lucky.

Lynette Dundon it's definitely a waste of good infrastructure. These conditions are not the conditions that the resident left them in. What you see are the result of months of abandonment along with the city prepping it demolition.

Rep. John Lewis has been doing a fantastic job... NOT! He runs around hollering racism while the black folks live in this mess or worse. what an icon tho...

Maybe the new racist mayor will help? nope she won't either. Ben Carson was gonna make some of her neighborhood sec. 8 housing. you think she wants all her voters in her neighborhood? absolutely not! keep your votes coming people. lol

Hey you idiot. Housing projects throughout Atlanta were closed in the 90s to encourage low income residents to do better for themselves without govt assistance. Some listened and some didn't because they wanted the easy money. People (not just blacks) who choose to remain uneducated (by not attending college or trade school) will always fall through the cracks.
