Wasn't it Ed Mann who started the thing?
@PiranhaRama

@@NN-ul4oy I have no idea if it was Ed....he might, in turn, blame FZ for intraband friction. Ed has a VERY interesting Facebook group called The Zappa Collective. Lots of interesting stories. I saw one of the FZ related bands last year (why can't I remember the name ?). Anyway, it was Kinnealy, Thunes and a few others. I asked a guy who turned out to be the band production manager why other '88 bandmembers like Chad Wackerman weren't involved in this project and he made a face as if to say "are you f'ing stupid ?", so there's definitely backstory that is real but I have zero knowledge of. That's why the CD is called "The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life"...they imploded after a few months.

@@PiranhaRama A couple of years ago I found a radio(?) interview on YT in which Frank explicitly stated "... Ed Mann decided he hated Scott Thunes..." and then he went on that Ed was able to engage other band members into action against Scott, for example scratching off Scott's name of a cake they got as a present, culminating in the demand towards Frank in the middle of the tour that Scott had to go. So Frank finally decided unnerved to just finish off the tour. I thought then that Frank had made two pretty unprofessional mistakes: the second was to lose the nerves and break up the tour for actually no big reason, cost him and the band members a lot of money and reputation and fans got disappointed. The first was Frank's decision to give Scott some kind of subleader job in the band because Frank thought Scott had "radar ears" that could detect mistakes being played. To be in the Zappa band with these kinds of lyrics and the crazy music you have to be a little silly, and you can see it in the behavior of the band on stage. And for these types of humans you rather need a subleader with kindergartener qualities, and that was not Scott. He is tall, he is dominant, he is loud, so probably he was pretty bossy as a subleader and pissed of the others. And Frank in his genius music heaven just thought of professionality and music and business, but not of social dynamics of partly immature adult musicians. What a misjudgement of Frank's, he could and should have known and he should have had the nerve to stand it and heal it, but he didn't. I interviewed Mike Keneally in the late '90s (no YT, not much information in the internet, no smart phone!!!) and asked him on the break up, and he just said that they all felt ashamed and childish afterwards and wished it hadn't happened, but no details. So this is what I know and analyzed for myself out of the available information.

The most incredibile thing about Frank is that who loves him knows every name of any musician that worked with him. He created a Spiritual Environment where all of us are Mothers [of The Invention ]. We belong in something different where the goal is the internal evolution achieving by different stimulations.

So great, I'am strictly convinced F.Z. would call you lovely ancestors, you keep the spirit of his holyness in a very good manner. I'am a fan of Zappa since my 12th year and now I'am 62! There were a lot of musicians I liked, but nobody guided me through my hell like Frank Zappa! I will go to Bad Doberan as soon as possible! Thank you for this great experience! 😍😎🌹

Scott & Chad, huh?.. fuckin’ hell!.. SO great to see / hear them onstage. 2 musicians who together (in Frank’s 80’s bands) brought me for decades (and continue to bring) profound musical joy with their choices in patterns and tones. 2 dudes who rehearsed together for maybe 9mths all told (‘81, ‘82, ‘84, ‘88) and played all of those shows with all of the rich collaborative “accompaniment” together with Frank’s solos and, ostensibly at least, were not particularly fond of one another’s playing (?), idk - how completely weird (to me). for ages I would have this daydream - seriously - of having enough money to offer them to get together for a few weeks and get themselves back into that FZ 80’s mode of choppy, punchy, improvised rhythmic and harmonic superstructures - and then (in my daydream) they’d come to a hall I’ve rented and invited a few folks to, and we’d be set up to have FZ guitar tracks - released and unreleased ones - and they get the gist of each ahead of time and then just play as though it were happening in real time. if I were wealthy I’d have offered (and would still) those 2 beautiful humans *obscene* amounts to do that before I die ☺️ #justsayin’ seanM

From what I understand, this has turned into Bobby's project over the years. So he might be running matters. As to Scott, I'm not sure he's become any easier to get along with than he ever was. Although he makes a joke of it by playing a character, he seems to have a genuinely difficult personality.

I guess that I'm one of The biggest Listening & Studying Frank World Wide [8 hours X day] & what I realise that all the Teenage Combos had only 1 problem during the Time after The Master passed. Recreate his Animic Spirit on Stage. This is very complex for any line up. The only suggest that I can give as a Zappaholic is to find the contact of one man called Ben Thomas & insert him in any Frank line up. The magic can happen.

That dork is Scott Thunes who joined Frank Zappa back in 1980 and stayed with him right through to the final tour in 1988. He’s actually brilliant but does play the occasional surprising notes but they are still melodic and relevant. Check out Does Humour Belong in Music show. He’s hilarious but cool with it and Frank is sublime.
