I honestly do not believe this could be described any more clearly or plainly. Loving this series, Milt. Thank you so much for your time and effort to put this out here. MUCH appreciated.

Hi, thanks for the great lesson. I have just bought 2 Baofeng BF-UV10R and with your video i was able to set them up. However i discovered that although they are given as reaching 10km range (with their 8watts) i could not even get 6km on open field. I wanted these radios for emergency, in case we lose electricity and use of mobile but with such short range they are useless. I wanted to ask you if there are radios with bigger range coverage. I scanned the web for "professional" radio but i came up empty . Thanks in advance.

Sorry for the delay, fabio. Good question. I believe that VHF and UHF frequencies depend greatly upon line of sight, meaning that wattage is not the most important factor for range. Handheld transceivers are limited, not by their power, but more by their short antennas. "The two-way radios and intercoms available for you to purchase usually fall in the frequency range of 150MHz to 900MHz. Unlike the AM radio waves, radio waves in these frequencies travel in straight lines and as a general rule cannot travel over the horizon or behind solid obstacles." - www.intercomsonline.com/2-way-radio-range-how-far-can-two-way-radios-communicate Look at this graphic: www.intercomsonline.com/v/vspfiles/images/HorizonDistance3.jpg Two handheld transceivers can communicate a maximum of about three miles, regardless of their power! That's based upon the antenna height being about six feet high. The higher the antennas, the greater the range. Your low-powered handheld transceiver can communicate great distances...upward! Operators routinely communicate with the space station using handheld transceivers with low wattage. It's a mistake to regard your radio as useless. The problem with distance is not power...it's short antennas. 73!

@@MiltReynolds hi Milt, thanks a lot for your reply and the links. Great lesson on wave coverage for uhf and vhf. I guess for my use (contact in an emergency scenario) i cannot use these. Thanks again..Best regards, Fabio

They would be very helpful in an emergency, fabio. You only need to improve the antennas. Consider looking for an efficient mobile antenna, or search for plans to make your own antenna. Perhaps something like this? kzitem.info/news/bejne/xoysroCGjpp6mm0

Excellent tutorial, Milt. I just got the 5x and have been playing around trying to figure out the programming. The GMRS channels are all populated with basically the same frequencies. It seems I cannot delete them and put the right frequencies in. When I press menu to complete the operation the voice says "cancelled". Any suggestions?
@MiltReynolds

That does seem odd, hostesstwinky. I'm not familiar with the 5x model...my first thought is that for some reason the radio will not allow deleting the GMRS channels. Are you able to save a frequency to memory, any frequency? If so, are you able to delete that memory channel? The UV-5R does not allow all memory channels to be deleted...there must always be at least one stored frequency channel. Just to cover the bases, here again are the steps to deleting and saving a memory channel for the UV-5R. For example, say I desire to delete channel 127: - [MENU] 028, [MENU] - Scroll up or down to CH-127, press [MENU] - [EXIT] Now, save a different frequency for channel 127: - Toggle to Frequency Mode using the VFO/MR button - Toggle to A frequency using the [A/B] button - Enter a new frequency: 157.555 Next, store the new frequency into memory: - [MENU] 027, [MENU] - Scroll up or down to 127, press [MENU] - [EXIT] Other than that, I can't think of what else to try. Sorry!

Found a bit more information... This, forums.mygmrs.com: - Select the channel to be changed and tune the radio to it. - Press MENU (to enter programming menu) - Press option number (or use up/down arrows to select the correct option) - Press MENU again (to change selected option) - Use Up/Down arrows to select preferred value - Press MENU again (to save) - Press EXIT (to exit programming menu) Source: forums.mygmrs.com/topic/2560-baofeng-uv-5x-gmrs/page/3/ This link describes the procedures for deleting and adding channel memories for any Baofeng radio: kzitem.info/news/bejne/pKh9lnmian2cfII

@@MiltReynolds Hello, Milt. Thanks for all that info. Everything you mentioned works for me. All the problems I have are basically not knowing what I'm doing. I was thinking that when you go from channel mode to frequency mode that the frequency for the channel would display, thus, I thought all the channels were populated with the same frequency. Duh! Again, thanks for making great videos.

Sorry for the delay in response, cesalie2... Not sure how to help...I don't understand what you mean by "Appears Menu listed is 88...". Can you explain a bit more? What do you mean by "acts like it is locked"? How do you know that the radio is not reset to factory defaults? When you power-on the radio, what happens? What does the display show? What happens when you attempt the reset operation? Are the following steps what you're performing for the reset: 1. MENU, 40, MENU 2. Voice prompt confirms, "Initialization." 3. Scroll up or down to ALL, press MENU to confirm 4. The display asks, "Source?" 5. Scroll up or down to ALL, press MENU to confirm 6. The display shows, "Wait.." 7. The display restarts and the radio has reset all options to factory default settings.

Here are two websites which may offer a path forward: - www.baofengradio.com/pages/download - chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Home However, I don't think it's worth it, unless you enjoy a challenge. It sounds like the radio somehow has lost its operating system. Perhaps a previous user used a faulty programming cable, or the wrong programming software. It's painful for me to give up and say I can't fix something, but it may be worth simply purchasing a new radio. Here's a site I found that sells Baofeng radios: www.baofengradio.com/

Here's another thought: Remove the battery, and make sure it's fully charged. Let the radio sit powered OFF, with no battery for 15 minutes. Re-install the fully-charged battery, power ON, and see if any of the buttons respond. If so, try an All-Reset. If no response from the keypad, consider purchasing a new radio. 73!

Sir new sub here are the frequency of the default channel is not gonna be back you mean sir we need to make our own frequency
@MiltReynolds
3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the delay...didn't see your comment until today! Yes, you need to make your own frequency and save it to a memory channel. The radio seems to require at least one saved frequency...it will not allow you to delete all the saved memory channels...it will always require at least one. So, after you reset all the radio, you'll see two default channels saved automatically: 136.025 is stored in memory as Channel 0 470.625 is stored in memory as Channel 127 In VFO mode enter a frequency, any frequency, and save it as Channel 1. Then you should be able to delete Channels 0 and 127. Does that answer your question?
