I love my UV-5R, I really want to make an antenna like that to see what kind of extra range I can get out of it, or what my mobile 20watt will do with a better antenna with some decent height to it. I live in a hilly area and I'm sure it will help.

Use a pigtail not a solid adaptor, the strain on that giant cable will be super annoying.

I have a role up J-pole for my setup . I have been known to get out up to 75 miles . No problems doing it . Nice and clear . As long as I can get it high enough. I have the triband model. No one license to 1.25M around here. Like having your own band . Just get a friend with one .

Same. This is the way to go honestly. This guy is a complete LID. Most of his signal is lost in that terrible poor shielded coax and than barely goes anywhere out of that no-gain antenna.

I briefly had a 42 inch tactical but SWR was so high when you hit the PTT, you could use the radio as a hand warmer.... what was even more odd, unscrewing the top off the antenna, made it a reasonable stubby antenna with SWR about 1.3 from memory. 239 connnectors on 2m & 70cm are a bit lossy. Knowing what I know now, I think I'd only use them (with a UV5R) upside down to make an easy build antenna with counterpoise radials hanging off the 4 screw holes.... just my 2 cents worth

I only use the tactical antenna when in the field for extra range, your right the standing wave is terrible but acceptable in an emergency, great to hear you are experimenting as we all do 👍

That's a toy antenna made for military LARPing and not actually useable.

you are probably losing some power to inductive coupling with the metal (conductive) mast especially when wrapped around it

That 42" tacti-cool antenna is actually way worse than the nip one you can buy, I forget it's name. Usually comes with your baofeng when you buy it in a kit. Oh! Nagoya. It's tuned better to the range you'll be operating. But it won't make your weenie as huge as a 42" will, the only way to get it even bigger is to get the 12" goose neck extender, and then crudely duct tape the antenna folded up like you lost that fancy overpriced velcro thing they gave you with hundred mile an hour tape. That screams tier one operator. Now go forth and emit spurious emissions, make sure you band creep at least three channels in case your friends are slightly out of wave, and always max wattage for hot antennas, saves on heating bills at home!
