Even with one of the radios off, you are driving RF into a radio because of the coax "T" connection on the mobile radio. Not good for the internals of the radios. Just run another coax line to another antenna or use an antenna switch to isolate the unused radio from the transmitting one.

I used to think the same. I have watched vids of people doing it for hours straight..not a single issue. Please spare me the king nerd-explanation on “why it’s bad”

Big risk with a T fitting is if you forget to turn off the other radio and thus risk damaging the other radio. A high frequency rated switch would be wiser than a T fitting.

Correct…. Don’t do this nor propagate the idea….. 😮 Use an actual so239 splitter.

Surely an antenna for a CB is not suitable for 70 cm, plus as you pointed out you have basically wired the CB and uv5r together. A switch would make more sense or separate antennas. Interesting idea but I don't think it's a good idea regardless of whether the radio is turned off or not. Interesting experiment nonetheless 😎👍

I use a Diamond x50 antenna for 446mhz, the CB has its own 27mhz antenna.

Good idea to experiment. Its how we learn. It was once said that the FCC (U.S.) amateur radio license is nothing more than a license to learn. I think it is true. Learn something new every day.

An awful lot of loss especially the T connector

Your right but for emergency use if need be, merely demonstrating a handheld can be connected to a homebase antenna.

I don't know about FM radio or Ham, but I have a new Baofeng vr5 and it's worthless as a police scanner! All I can pick up is School bus dispatch!

@kentprepper6392 yeah I figured they are encrypted. I sure miss hearing fire and pd on my old Bearcat XL 144 16 ch scanner, but that was back in 97.🙏

Yes, the first responders and alphabet groups have gone to encryption and trunking. They claim the intention is to prevent the RX of police data to nefarious types. However in doing so, they keep the law abiding citizens in the dark also. Most of us just want to avoid trouble, thus why we RX the police. Anyway I have heard that online programs and apps can sometimes sleuth into the frequencies but I've not had success. Good luck and cheers.

I haven't done any work with coax since the early nineties when computer networking used bnc connectors. It seems like not much has changed.

I use a Diamond x50 myself, being in Clacton I've spoken to afew guys in Kent on ch8 PMR using my kt-8900 not the Baofeng I tend to use that for data..

not got the link to hand but Ham doing review on a 'feng noted it was very low (not entirely surprising as manufacturing quality & consistency varies a bit) but in the end he (& have heard this elsewhere) 239 connectors as fitted to his surecom power meter, are apparently a bit lossy for 2M & 70cm. .....erm & guess if only using the UV5r for monitoring, there's not an issue? Might want to disable transmit in chirp, just to be on the safe side tho.

The hack is hooking it up to a diamond antenna?
@kentprepper6392

Yes, the hack is that a handheld uv5r will oporate on a homebase antenna, in this case the X50.

I use the x30 and a directional beam when at home. The homebase/mobile one is on the beam that's indoors and the x30 is for hhe handheld in the bedroom should I need to transmit. The other is always on standby on the channel I use for some pals close by
