Frequent urination is the need to pee more often than average (seven to eight times) throughout the day. It can happen to anyone, but it’s more common in people over the age of 70, pregnant people and people with an enlarged prostate. The most common cause is urinary tract infections. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Frequent urination, or urinary frequency, means having the urge to pass urine often. Peeing frequently is often the result of drinking too much fluid but can indicate conditions such as urethritis or urinary tract infections.
Urinating is how the body removes waste fluids. Urine -- which contains water, uric acid, urea, and toxins -- stays in the bladder until it reaches a point of fullness. At this point, a person expels it from the body.
Most people urinate 6-7 times per day. Frequent urination, or urinary frequency, is when a person needs to urinate more than 7 times in 24 hours if they have consumed about 2 liters of fluid across that day.
Many people live with frequent urination. Although there is often a simple explanation for an individual’s urinary frequency, it can sometimes indicate a more serious condition. Early identification of the problem can lead to timely treatment, preventing possible complications.
Frequent urination is when you need to pee too many times throughout the day or night. It’s inconvenient and disruptive to your daily life. It’s a common complaint among all people, regardless of sex or gender.
Frequent urination is a symptom of many different conditions and can have a wide variety of treatments. It can be a symptom of pregnancy or a urinary tract infection, or more serious or long-lasting conditions like diabetes, overactive bladder or prostate issues.
In many cases, your healthcare provider can help relieve frequent peeing by treating the underlying condition.
Frequent urination may happen when there's a problem with part of the urinary tract. The urinary tract is made up of the kidneys; the tubes that connect the kidneys to the bladder, which are called the ureters; the bladder; and the tube where urine exits the body, called the urethra.
You may pass urine more often than usual because of:
1. Infection, disease, injury or irritation of the bladder.
2. A condition that causes your body to make more urine.
3. Changes in muscles, nerves or other tissues that affect how the bladder works.
4. Certain cancer treatments.
5. Things you drink or medicines you take that cause your body to make more urine.
