Been playing bar chords for 40 plus years.. I STILL learned something out of this. You really have a gift to teach my friend. I appreciate how you make us all feel equal to you in spite of the fact that your guitar skills are superior. Thanks for all your help. Good for us intermediate players cuz you reinforce the things we've learned right. And I can learn where I was taught wrong or made some bad habits along the way.

This was THE lesson on Bar Chords for me! The idea of first placing the thumb on the 2 upper strings, depending on which spot it feels te easiest, was the solution for my problems.

Notes: Don't try to get it to sound good, focus on getting the shape quick As many bar chords as you can in a min - ignore it sounding bad - core muscle memory! Try different spots on the fretboard - F is hardest! Practice chords, not just the bar Make high E and B string work - then low E Thumb pointed towards headstock - so hand doesn't cramp up - big muscles vs small muscles - better wrist position Don't hold down for more than a few secs at a time Great lesson! 😁

Another example of how this channel is better than other guitar teaching channels: they all say F bat chord is hard at first, and it is for new people, bit this is the first time I've heard it brought up that only new people try to hold the chord FOR SO LONG AT A TIME! I'm not new. I've played 4 hour sets in too many bars to remember, but even still... I relax the muscle as often as i flex it. Great video

This video really helped me out. I've been playing guitar on and off for many years and being unable to practice bar chords effectively has really inhibited my skill development. Best, most realistic advice I've seen! If you're currently learning this, look no further, and refer back to this as you progress. Bars were the biggest hurdle for me. For a long time I had decided I just wasn't able to do it. Very frustrating! I wish I had stuck with it a long time ago, because now I know that if you persevere, you WILL learn to do it. It does take a lot of practice but it is so worth it. Trust me, if you keep at it, and don't worry about the sound quality, (it will come), it will become easy and painless.

Thank You. . . I had an accident with a table saw which shaved the bone out of my left hand ring finger. I put the guitars up for a long time, but I miss playing, so I bought a left-handed guitar and took up playing again. I'm in my 70s and boy what a difference regarding muscle memory (I was glad to hear you talk about this). One more thing, starting over again allows me to shed bad playing habits and start out practicing (repetition, repetition, repetition) with good practice habits! Bravo Zulu my friend, WELL DONE! This is the best video on barre chords. I have been struggling with strength for a while now and my forearm hurting (I have an old shoulder injury which hasn't helped). I love your practice tip - 1 mins of on off. The biggest revelation for me was the thumb placement. Even though I have very small hands moving it back to it's limit, 1cm has made a huge difference. I knew correct technique was the only way I would be able to play barres easily. All along the watchtower here I come :-)

Scott, Here's something else I found useful. The first thing that a person needs to do is relax. Second, do some warm up exercises like what I call is the "Finger fretboard walk". Start at the first fret first finger, second fret 2nd finger, 3rd finger 3rd fret and 4th finger 4th fret. Then just walk up the fretboard with your 4 fingers. Finger stretching helps too.

Useful tip that barring all six chords with the index may not be ALWAYS necessary (depending on the chord obviously). In fact for the type of music barre chords are most used (e.g. hard rock and the like) only the lower four strings are played most of the times. A mistake I made for a long time was not to lift the fingers when going from a chord to another, in the attempt to keep the finger in position. Eventually this slowed down the muscle memory process. One better accepts being slow in the beginning but this will pay off later

This was really helpful! Every other tutorial i have watched has said the complete opposite of what you said, like the thumb needs to be in the middle of the other fingers or to keep plucking every chord but just move the fingers slightly enough until it sounds good. But after trying what you said; leaving the thumb in a natural postition, and then taking the hand off and forming the chord multiple times, made everything sound a lot better and hurt less. Thank you!
