I am now in my early 70s. Living in the UK I bought my first Beaufort jacket over 45yrs ago. A second followed some 20 yrs later. I am now wearing the "International" and can thoroughly recommend it. Smart, dark and a modern design. Anyone flying into the UK landing at Newcastle airport will only be half an hour from the factory which has its shop and a large end of line and Seconds sale. Superb quality and a good video.

As an owner of a real Barbour coat, I think there are a few points to mention: 1. You can easily recondition your own Barbour with a can of the dressing, a cotton towel and...a hair dryer. 2. People for some reason think that these coats are warm. They are not. They're just waxed canvas. They will keep the rain out, but the wax coating can, for some people, make the cold wind feel colder. 3. The smell. There's a definite odor to the coats, due to the wax. The smell dissipates but never goes away. It will also make clothes stored near the coat smell. It will also make your cloth car seats smell temporarily. The smell is NOT bad at all, but it's distinct.
@clooperman3745

As already mentioned Barbour thornproofs don't keep you warm, the waxed fabric conducts the cold through to the inside of the coat the same as it conducts heat through on a warm day as the sun heats the fabric up, they are superb long lived jackets if looked after correctly, a lot of people don't understand thornproofs need to be reproofed fairly regularly, but they can be repaired over and over again, in the end you finish up with a jacket a bit like Triggers broom!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to live in South Shields not far from Barbour , I have owned one or two Barbour waxed jackets from the 1980s on here are the good points GOOD POINTS It is a true Heritage brand that simply never goes out of style/fashion They are really well made and no matter how much abuse you give them they can be "redeemed and or repaired back to good as new " They are really waterproof ..really ..(provided you rewax every year or two depending on the type of use and climate you use them in ) You can easily rewax them yourself no problem which saves money AND makes you invest more in your coat as YOU have personally maintained and looked after it so to speak . They age wonderfully , full of character that develops to you and your body over years of use . They are expensive but they literally last you a lifetime (with maintenance as required ) 50 years plus is quite common Barbours and even then they don't look dated the classic designs are almost ageless. BAD POINTS They are heavy ..just heavy they don't hold water or anything they are just a heavy jacket right off the rail . They don't seal well around the neck area in a rainstorm I usually wear ashort scarf to stop water ingress around the neck area which in truth is badly designed one size fits all kind of deal. They smell very strongly when new and rewaxed but ony for a while personally I don't mind the smell as it's not that unpleasant and is a reminder of what I am wearing . They are uselss in really cold conditions even with the optional furry col;d weather liners that can be press stud fitted and removed , yes they stop wind chill dead in it's track be they have no lofting ability or snow skirt to stop the wind just whistling straight up you body and robbing you of warmth . They are just way to warm to wear in any condition that requires even walking up a hill or such ( by warm I mean they make you perspire as they are absolutely NOT breathable in any way ) even when not fastened on a moderate 9 degree celcius day you will sweat if you are walking even over moderate terrain or in a shopping Mall . If you want one of the Barbours go for it it's a great product but my modern down jackets or waterproof goretex style outdoor gear is far far more usefu and everyday wear than any Barbour I own . there is a reason skiers , mountain climbers , snow sports etc do not wear barbours doing these endevours but Barbour waxed jackets definately have a place in the outdoors and street wear situations albeit somewhat limited .

One of mine is over 35 years old and still great cond, been back to barbour once for a repair. Luckily still fits as I bought a size up many years back,the older ones ,classic have a eight to ten inch chest tolerance for layering and for when lifting arms up ,fishing,shooting,horse riding. Newer slim styles are not the same as original.

Great vid comparing 3 very popular jackets that people will be deciding between. Myself included - I bought the Beaufort a few months ago and I love it. A few additional things worth mentioning: - the Beaufort does actually have something equivalent to an "inside" pocket: it's a vertical zipped pocket between the main zipper and the flap. I prefer it because it's more secure than the velcro ones (i.e. has complete closure). - the rear game pouch is huge and can be used for anything you like. I've put a laptop in there, some random shopping, an umbrella etc. - there is often a clear quality difference between the jackets made in England and those made abroad. On the foreign-made ones the cord lapels are thinner, and stitching is rough in some places. Which I find unfortunate since they are still quite expensive, and Barbour does a lot of marketing about its British heritage.

I love their jackets and I have a couple. Yes, they are worth it. Do note that they are pretty much just a shell jacket, so if you get these for the warmth, they are not really worth. They simply will not keep you very warm by themselves because they are not really a winter jacket, even with the inner quilted vest lining. Still, if you get a roomy enough one you can layer up inside and they'll keep snow and rain when properly waxed. Also, they breathe terribly, which is what you get with 1890's wax technology. In any case, they are great for low-moderate activity, and are very elegant in almost any occasion or environment. The weight, pockets, style, zippers, very nice. Btw, the Beaufort does have an inner zippered side pocket on the left side. Great video.

Had my solway zipper since 1992..... discontinued in 97 i think, it has been re-proofed several times and still looks good.... sadly these are now more fashion items rather than the functional farm wear mine has been used for. Good points are sturdy construction, large pockets, good zipper and fasteners and it can be sent back for repairs if required....bad points are not really waterproof and suffer from condensation if you do anything resembling physical activities... they also deposit the wax on furnishings and car seats and develop a rather distinctive smell that means mine has to sleep in the garage....

I had one (can't remember the model) for many years for horse riding. They are great, quite warm, wind- and waterproof and durable. The zip-on hood is very useful for riding, because it zips off in case your hood gets stuck on a branch. Once I almost got pulled off the horse at such occasion while wearing a jackett with a fixed hood. Only downside to Barbour jackets is the fact you have to renew the wax from time to time, which is quite expensive and tedious.
@jcdawg8363

There are two kinds of outdoor jackets, Barbour jackets and all the rest. I have had a Beaufort for about 20 years, I bought the zip in liner about 5 years ago when a local dealer had a clearance sale. The liner makes the Beaufort warm enough for all but the absolute coldest weather. I wore it to the Army/Navy game in 2018 and the temperature never got above the mid 30s all day and we were sitting in the shade. With an undershirt, a heavy cotton shirt and a light wool scarf I was absolutely comfortable all day. I currently have 2 Beauforts, one with a liner and one without, and a Bedale. The unlined Beaufort is probably the jacket I wear the most. It is warm enough for most of the cold days we have here (Georgia), is roomy enough for easy movement and the non gusseted sleeves make taking it on and off easy. I think the Bedale looks the best because it is a little shorter, especially when worn with only a shirt on underneath. The Beaufort is designed as a hunting jacket, specifically for upland bird hunting and the features and design speak to that. The game pouch in back is the most obvious but the looser sleeves are designed to allow for easier swinging of a shotgun. The longer length offers more protection and warmth for the upper thighs and the lining extends the full length for maximum warmth. The Bedale is designed as a riding jacket. The shorter length is there for sitting in a saddle without the jacket bunching up in your lap. The double snap vent in the rear allows the jacket to accommodate the rear of the saddle without bunching behind the back. The gusseted sleeves prevent wind and rain from blowing up the arms while riding. The half lining is there to keep the cotton lining from wearing out on the thighs and where it comes in contact with the saddle and acts as a sort of drip edge that stops water from wicking up the cotton lining when riding on rainy days. I have mine rewaxed every 2 or 3 years and have had no issues with them. Barbour does an excellent job of repairing any holes or tears when you send them back for "service". I own very few things I am as happy I purchased as my Barbour jackets.

They’re much cheaper to buy in the here in the uk. Love Barbour, they’re excellent quality. If they break they’ll fix it for you and even send you some material of lines they don’t do anymore if you need to fix them yourself.

I love Barbour I have a few both new and used they are made so well and look better with age I also have winter warm coat and a puffer and some quilted vests from Barbour. All the shirts are also well made and fit great and the knitwear it good too. Possibly my favourite brand. 🇬🇧

one thing I personally do not like from all these jackets is that I find them too short, I prefer a slightly bigger size. I like that the hood is detachable, but I am not so convinced about the corduroy collar, which performs well but some other material could be better in colder climates. It is very important that the chest-collar part has an intelligent cut so that it allows a woolen scarf without choking you (I use a shemag or wool scarf)! It would be great to own a Barbour with a lining in my clan's tartan (please true wool), until that happens I have waxed (DIY) some old army/navy smocks, which worked quite well. After sweating and chilling for years inside of Gore-Tex & Co I am now totally into wool and waxed cotton, which is environmentally much better also. Patagonian and Irish fisherman's sweaters under my waxed navy smock have performed well until now. For the average climate we have here in Patagonia (and the Falklands) this works, but as soon as you are outdoors and it gets colder or snowy the woolen poncho is necessary, and if it rains a lot there is nothing better than the rubber poncho (ideal when horse riding or fishing), the real problem, the big problem, is our constant wind! and that is why collar and cuffs must be well designed. Greetings from wild, wet, windy and wonderful Western Patagonia

I have had a Barbour in the past, but I have a preference for the Drizabone brand. I find their coats are of comparable quality, but are of a better cut.

I have my Beaufort about 35 years. With lining and hood. I was just thinking about sending it to Barbour for waxing which was never done in all these years. Its only $35. Since mine is old the lining is snap-in which always annoyingly seems to move around when putting on. I wish it was zip-in but not getting a new one. So if a jacket lasts you 30-40 years it’s definitely worth 400 bucks. And mine has that Barbour collar pin ❤️. I don’t see too many here in NY. But years ago when I used to travel in Europe they were all over.

The sleeves are cut a little short to accommodate gauntlets - handy when piloting your 1933 Bentley VpD open tourer. These jackets should really only be worn in the right circumstances - outdoors in foul weather - when working or driving. I've only noticed beaters and pickers wearing wax jackets on a shoot - they are not comfortable to shoot in and most guns wear tweed or soft jackets by Musto, Schoffel, Jack Pyke, or the like.

I"ve got two. The bedale and one of their international motorcycle ones. My only complaint is that the wax attracts every bit of dust, lint or pet hair. So you're constantly wiping it down. Other than that, they go with everything.

I have the Barbour Brandreth with the tweed patches on the elbows. I got it for half off, but I'd absolutely pay more for a Barbour given how much I absolutely love this one. Definitely a jacket I plan on keeping for life.

Barbour International are more motorcycle oriented and are slightly more tailored. The Duke is an awesome jacket. Especially in black. Also, re-waxing it yourself is a colossal PITA.
