Using the funicular is incredible as you get higher up and hike. If you are not a hiker and you are an American and never been on a funicular, it is an interesting experience. I don't know any place in the US where there are these. Just the experience of going up on a steep "train ride" is an exciting experience! The views are incredible from up there.

Do you ever put together groups or is an all or nothing thing? My husband and I will be in Barcelona the first week of May and definitely want a smaller group (rather than a bus). if you can't, can you recommend smaller groups or at least ones that would get us there early like you recommend? How are the trails? Do I need hiking boots to go to the trails / montain? Is it paved or what? Thank you.
@technoshock11
18 күн бұрын
If you already have hiking shoes with you, bring them, but to be honest if you stick to what I call the "tourist" trails - i.e., the one to the Santa Cova (from the monastery), the one to Sant Miquel and Sant Joan, the direct trail to Sant Jeroni from the monastery or the one starting from the top Sant Joan funicular station - they are not a must. There is a slightly tricky forest section on the Sant Jeroni trail before the final stairs, but it is doable. The Santa Cova/St. Miquel/St. Joan trails are paved - at worst you'll be on a large dirt track. The Sant Jeroni trails are partly paved, partly not, but they are not too difficult either. If you are planning to get off the beaten path, like hiking from/to the bottom of the mountain from/to Monistrol de Montserrat or Collbató - hiking shoes are a must. Montserrat is a rocky mountain, and navigating its terrain can be difficult without proper shoes. I have hiked a lot in Montserrat, and I love it. Definitely worth it if you have enough time during your trip.

I understand there are 2 parking options; bottom tier/ level and mid tier parking but what are the pros and cons of selecting either option i.e. fees, parking duration, parking area closing times etc. If we drive to the cathedral is there a risk of not getting parking at all or will the parking fees be extortionate. please advise.

I disagree. There is no need to go inside the church. You can do so many things that are not religious. It is a fantastic place. It is incredible to come here and hike. No religious beliefs are required. So no need to be early. If you are religious, follow his advice.
@krystalmariecoss

The church is part of Spain’s cultural heritage and that is why you’re seeing it in this video. This video is about Barcelona, Spain. Spain is a predominantly Christian country and Barcelona’s main attraction is the Basílica de la Sagrada Familia. That means that thousands of people (religious and non-religious) are not blind to the architectural beauty of the churches in Spain. They not only recognize its beauty, but its historical and cultural significance, without feeling threatened, angry, or fearful to go inside. They are simply confident in themselves.

The Basilica is absolutely beautiful. Whether you believe in the religion or not, you can appreciate the craftsmanship, the architecture, the culture, etc. Don’t go all the way to Monserrat and miss the Basilica .
