4:40 Technically Japanese does have a V sound, but it's relatively recent, used in almost no native words, and usually isn't even used in Japanifications of English words, but instead of ベジータ, you could write it as ヴェジータ to properly maintain a V sound. I've only seen this used in a handful of names in manga, it is not a very common sound at all, but it's there. Also while my brain says Tullece, I will forever write and pronounce it as Talless because of the big green dub.

I'll keep chiming in with our Italian names cause I think it's interesting to compare: Saiya-jin/Saiyan = Saiyan, for some reason, even though we don't have that "-n" suffix. Our old dub extended the second "a" though, so there's a debate here too between Saiyan and "Saiyaan". Bejiita/Vegeta = Vegeta, but we pronounce the "ge" like in the actual word "vegetable", _but_ we extend it so it becomes an "eh" sound, since "e" is not pronounced as "ee" here. So in Japanese it'd be "ベジェータ". Kakarotto/Kakarot/Kakarrot = it got censored in the old dub because of "kaka". It became "Kaarot". Otherwise though it's either Kakarot or "Kakaroth". When there's a "-tto" sound at the end we render it as "th", don't ask me why, but we don't pronounce the "h". So yeah that means Vegetto is "Vegeth", or in the dub, "Vegeku", a completely made up name like your "Vegerot". The "ge" in "Vegeku" is pronounced like Vegeta, see above. Taaresu/Turles/Tullece = "Tarles". It's so wrong I don't even know where to begin. Baadakku/Bardock/Burdock = either "Bardack" or "Bardak" depending on how they feel like spelling it that day, cause the "ock" would sound like the English word "oak". Sometimes though, it is spelled "Bardock". Burorii/Broly/Broli = Broly, always has been, always will be. Seripa/Selypa/Fasha = Seripa. When stuff "sounds right" in Japanese we tend to leave it as is. Likewise, Toma is just Toma

"Saiyan" should probably be translated as "Saiyano", much like "Americano", "Italiano", etc. which is a little strange to think about. I supposed this is due to either not sounding "cool" enough to the localisation team, or maybe getting the name from the Frentch script or something instead of the Japanese word itself, and not thinking much about it. "Bardock" is now being used in the italian translation of the DBS manga, funnily enough.

@@androidsenpai1462 It's really not. The scripts are translated from Japanese, and the translations are accurate. However, they're heavily censored because of how prevalent Christianity is in Italy. Anything considered blasphemous is removed, and any scene containing sexual references is heavily butchered, including Bulma's first meeting with Goku, or just cut outright. Sadly, this extends to other anime as well. It's because of the company that owns the studio, Silvio Berlusconi's Mediaset, which has established itself as the one willing to air anime since the 90s

I use Broli, but the Japanese word for Broccoli is different from Burorii in the ending sound. His name has an elongated vowel, but the actual word for broccoli generally does not. ブロリー - Burorii ブロツコリ - Burokkori There are alternate forms of the word, some including the elongated I, but as far as I am aware they're just dialectal variants. If I were to give FUNimation any benefit of the doubt, Toma when written out could have maybe been misread as Torra, as an "m" can sometimes resemble a double "r". Anyway, this video was somewhat informative, as I hadn't previously been aware of the transposition in Selipa's name and had always assumed it was derivative of celery. Conversely, I was already aware of the transposition in Tullece, but always assumed the name Turles came from someone mistakenly assuming his name was supposed to be derivative of tunip.

The point on the Bardock/Burdock kerfuffle makes me honestly wish fans would understand that Dragon Ball being a series from Japan with these kinds of pun names would mean that it should be expected that there is variety in how a name can be translated. Just because they grew up with a dub that rendered the name one way does not mean that's the sole correct spelling and that if they don't like how it looks? It's easy to do a mental find and replace for that name and move on instead of turning it into one big stupid fight.

Just this last chapter, they mixed up "kikoha" (ki blast) for "KiKoHo" (Tenshinhan's ability), and they're still calling Mr. Satan "Hercule" for some reason, even though even the dubs stopped doing that a long time ago.
@the-aspiring-creator4249
Жыл бұрын
@qwertyMrJINX I mean it looks bad... but considering they've opted to preserve Mr. Popo's speech patterns? It's necessary to do. Honestly, that's a mistake I can understand, the two in terms of how they're written and even pronounced are so similar a slip-up can happen or maybe they're playing off of Pan being a little kid and that she might not exactly know what the difference between a "Kikoho" and a "Kikoha" is. Hell, who's to say it's meant to be an error. Viz doesn't render "Ki blast" as "Kikoha" so it's fair to say they simply adapted the line. As for the point on Hercule? Well that's the result of powers outside their control and Viz making a choice they didn't expect would lead to issues down the line. See from what I can recall, sometimes certain elements of a localization are determined by the licensor and not the translators themselves. A good example of this is when Super was airing on TV? Before the Blu-Ray releases which utilize accurate subs by Steve Simmons? The original Crunchyroll subs used dub names and terminology. This is in part because this is what Toei and Shueisha have labelled basically the names of these characters for this region so for Viz? Well... when they translated the original manga, they have it written in his introduction that Hercule is his name with Mr. Satan being a stage name he took as a wrestler. This meant he fought Cell as Hercule and thus Satan City they chose to change to Herculopolis. It isn't like say when they changed "Boo the Djinn" back to "Majin Boo" because they realized that the Djinn moniker is technically inaccurate, Hercule was what they chose to render that character's name as and with the explanation they gave, they can't just shift back to Mr. Satan easily. So unfortunately unless they want to fight with Shueisha or rerelease the old DB manga with more accurate translations and waste time and resources reprinting the Super manga with those various fixes they're stuck with it. That is at least to my understanding, I could fully be talking out of my ass as someone way smarter looks into this but that's what I got from it.

I've heard it claimed that Funimation actually didn't have access to the Japanese script/production materials they usually would for the Bardock special when they had to dub it, leading to some inaccuracies (and possibly to some of the added dialogue as they tried to make it make sense to them). Presumably this also lead to them not having access to most of Bardock's team's names and just making up replacements, but since Toma's name IS spoken in the film they could at least go by ear, resulting in his dub name at least more or less resembling his original name (hell, maybe they misheard it). Though it's been a while since I've seen your video on the special, so maybe you already covered/debunked this claim and I forgot.

With Tullece, if you were a kid in the UK in the early-mid 2000s and your first proper exposure to him was through AB Groupe's "Big Green" dub, you were just out of luck trying to figure his name out since they pronounced it several different times, usually depending on which character was speaking. Tullece himself pronounces his name "Tar-lez", Bulma goes with "Tallus", I'm sure FUNimation's "Turles" gets in there somewhere and Amond's actor clearly had that dub name written on his script but didn't know how to pronounce it, settling for "Terlz". I'm also certain near the beginning one of the purple twins calls him "Thallus". And this was after seeing "Taurus" a lot when I first got internet and a UK sticker book I had calling him "Tarles". Interestingly enough I just started watching "The Expanse" and I've seen them do that using things like "Earthers" or "Belters" even though those groups are clearly multi-ethnic. With a race as clearly homogenous as the Namekians, I think in English it still kinda fits. Especially since I remember (could be wrong) the non-Namekian characters saying it the most, and hey, they're not from there so what do they know?

Funnily enough, in Spanish they didn't even translate Saiyajin, or Namekuseijin, they just left the word as is, which I think is a pretty valid approach instead of trying to morph it into another language. I'm talking about South American Spanish btw, I have no idea about the Spain Dub. Similarly Kakarrotto was just left as is, but Kuririn was changed to Krillin. I find all of these little variations and decisions to be quite interesting. I actually do not remember what they did with Turles, since I haven't watched that movie in years, but Vegeta is written the same as in English, because in Spanish "Vegeta" is just "Vegetales" with the end cut out, and is pronounced with Spanish phonetics, instead of adapting it to be similar to Japanese. This saves Vegetto from that nightmare the English Dub had to go through, but makes the pronunciation be different from the original, a noble sacrifice I'd say. With Bardock they just grabbed the name from the English version, since the word doesn't exist in Spanish, but I believe I've also heard Bardack being used. Broly is also the same, which is funny becase in Spanish "Brocoli" also ends with an i, so it shows when they were just grabbing from English.

Spain went through so many translation woes when it came to Saiyans, based on the many dub error compilations I saw over the years, while Namekians did have it easier. In manga translations they always used Saiyanos and Namekianos, which is how the Human - Humano translation goes. And while the show's Spain dub kept the latter, the former went first with Guerreros del Espacio (Space Warriors) just like the Big Green dub (blame the French scripts), then (by the mid to late Cell arc) strangely either just Guerreros and even Super Guerreros (Super Warriors) which was the term used for Super Saiyans but later used for pretty much anything; then some movies used Saya / Saiya and finally by the tail end of Z (literally in episode 289) they settled with Saiyan which was used in GT and Super. So yeah, one's properly translated to Spanish since day one while the other went to many names and ended with the English one.

I do prefer the spelling of names to differentiate the name from the word pun. As long as the pun isn't COMPLETELY lost. Frieza and Broly obscure the pun source enough that it doesn't click immediately, and something about that feels nicer in my brain. I also personally tried finding a compromise with Turles that keeps the odd url sound while making the lettuce pun actually noticible if you look for it. Wound up with Turless, removing the z like sound at the end was apparently all it took.

Though I do prefer the puns to be more obvious, I’m not a native English speaker so even though I’m fluent in English these names still sound kinda alien and fantastical to me even when they’re close to the pun source. Fun fact: In New York, "brolic" (pronounced Brah-lic like brocoli) is a slang term among black folks for muscular that's been around since the early 90s. Kids like me who first learned of Broly before the Movie 8 dub actually thought his name was a reference to this since he's so jacked and pronounced his name Brah-li as a result. So black millenials who grew up in the tri-state area most likely use the Brah-li pronounciation (It is possible that brolic originated from Broly to begin with since DBZ fansubs were popular in the inner-city in the early 90s)

Japanese KINDA has a v sound, but only in katakana, so, only for borrowed foreign words and in no other situation. It's done by modifying the ウ (u) katakana with a dakuten, turning it into ヴ (vu). Meanwhile, va, vi, ve and vo are done by adding a small vowel after ヴ. So va vi vu ve vo would be ヴァ,ヴィ, ヴ, ヴェ and ヴォ. But I notice that in many cases, this isn't done anyway, even though it can be done. Bejiita being one example.

I tend to prioritize transliteration over name origin when it comes to localizing Japanese names, especially when it comes to a fantasy world like Dragon Ball, and as for Selipa, “Selipar” or “Seliper” is not what her name is structured to adapt. Her name is “セリパ”, not “セリパー”, so it could never get adapted any other capacity than what it has already in terms of vowel sounds. Hell, this is the same reason I keep FUNimation’s subs’ translation of “サウザー” as “Sauzer” instead of “Thousa” or “Thouser”. Like, regardless of how you interpret the name, that’s the generally agreed upon consensus as to what it is, even among the dub’s “Salza”.

I think it closely reflects the “slight changing of vegetable name spelling, but almost unnoticeable” thing in its original language and I’m sure it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to pronounce the “a” with a ä sound (like “o” in “dock”) if one so wishes.

Id like to throw in my two cents (or more appropriately Pence as im about to discuss) into the whole Bardock name discussion. I was personally able to immediately get the name pun behind Bardocks name even as a little kid because in Britain we have a drink called "Dandylion and Burdock" and although it is a rather antiquated taste by todays standard it is still enough of a facet British culture that you can still find it in the fizzy drinks aisles alongside more globally recognised mainstays. And with that in mind you should be able to see why atleast I personally refer to Goku's father as "Bardock" apposed to "Burdock" with the knowledge that Saiyan names are meant to be plays on the vegetable. "Burdock" is simply not a play on the vegetable name, its the exact spelling whereas "Bardock" atleast plays with the root word.
