Hiram Williams was from Nelson County, KY and Bardstown is the largest town. When Hiram was living in Rochester, NY - he had followed one of his sisters there as he needed someone to lend him money - he introduced several tunes and songs that he said were local to Nelson County.
One of them is this tune, "Bardstown Girls", which reflects some his life choices as it focuses on alcohol (Bardstown has always had a strong distilling culture) and Hiram's general level of responsibility, which is not very high.
The lyrics are as follows:
"I was born near Heaven Hill, could smell the mash from the whiskey still
Bardstown gals give me a thrill, love those Bardtown gals.
CHORUS:
Hey, Hey, Bardstown gals, come with me, the liquor's free
Hey, Hey Bardstown gals, love those Bardstown gals.
I got drunk went on a spree, Bardstown gals, they came with me
Woke up naked in a hollow tree, love those Bardstown gals.
Chorus
Bardstown gals are big and small, some are short and some are tall
Bardstown gals I love them all, love those Bardstown gals
Chorus..
