Lol we used to snap the thermometers in school to get the mercury out and play with the mercury over the hand. It was after the teacher said something about the temp that is safe to touch mercury and that’s body temp so we were snapping the thermometers and playing with the mercury over our hands weird and satisfying. But hey we’ve all been stupid when young. I wouldn’t dare do that now not a chance.

I used to handle mercury in the late ‘70s. The thinking at the time is to avoid chronic contact. Casual contact was considered harmless as long as you didn’t do it every day. Mercury vapour is poisonous but again it had to be daily contact. The soluable salts were more poisonous. It was only in the ‘90s where mecury contact became stricter and I sometimes wonder if it’s exaggerated. For example I read about someone who made a fuss about a broken CFC spiral light tube but the amount of mercury is almost invisible.

Cody, you make some amazing videos and are clearly a very smart person. All I want to say for my own piece of mind, as a medical professional, and as someone who has been sick from mercury, is that you should really be much much much more careful when handling this element. It's the vapor that you have to really worry about. And it does readily vaporize at room temperature. Mercury toxicity is cumulative. It does not leave your body, but builds to higher levels with each exposure. And you may not have symptoms for years. It's extremely difficult to quantify your current body mercury levels with any accuracy. There is NO safe amount of mercury exposure. At any rate, great videos! I look forward to them! Carry on!

I remember our primary school teacher showing us experiments with mercury. If I remember correctly he poured it through a tube and almost immediately the liquid mercury formed what seemed to be like metal spheres that rolled all the way down the tube before turning to liquid again. It was super cool
@Elo-Him
9 жыл бұрын
+papalevies It has a rare reverse surface tension. Concave if you will. Making them cool little marbles. The way you see other liquids, like water, in a glass stick a little higher to edges is the usual convex way.
@coinguygggi2
9 жыл бұрын
+Elo Him Those effects are both surface tension. there is no reverse surface tension. The reason water forms the concave shape (called a meniscus), is because water molecules experience Cohesion(stick to themselves) as well as adhesion( Stick to other polar surfaces). Mercury Has an incredibly high surface tension, but since it is non polar It tends not to adhere to nonmetals. if however you place say a penny in mercury the mercury over time will coat the penny in a thin layer of itself.

A chemistry profesor told me that decades ago mercury was used this way to steal precious metals from rich people. Some people used to show how is to put the hands in a mercury bath. The rich people had lots of rings in the hands so some metal was dissolved into the mercury and it can be recovered easily.

guys, calm down. mercury poisoning takes a decent amount of exposure to cause a large amount of damage. it's like radiation poisoning. as long as you don't have open cuts or sores and don't do this every day you'll be fine. I know a lot of old chemistry and physics teachers from college who grew up around mercury and most didn't have mad hatters disease.

Hey Cody, I was just watching a video where a tuning fork was lowered into water and that was interesting but now I need to see some tining fork mercury experiments. I would imagine you could get some interesting patterns happening if you find some imaginative ways to resonate the body of mercury and not just it's surface. Maybe even expose individual balls of mercury to various frequencies and make them dance. All the best, from Ryan in England..... 😎🙏🙏🙏😎

Damn!!! I woudn't do that if I were you. When I was a kid a boy from my neighborhood accidentally broke one of these old mercury medical thermometers in his mouth and got heavily poisoned from the mercury that he swallowed. It took a while to get all the mercury out of his organism. Maybe he swallowed 0,5 gram or less but that was enough for holidays in hospital. Even after that he still was in medical treatment.
